By the time it was retrieved, there was time for only 44 overs a side, and West Indies' slow over-rate cut their own innings to 43. In excellent conditions, Sidhu saw his team to a fine 260 with his fifth century in one-day internationals, an Indian record. Simmons and Williams began the chase soundly, but the latter stages were sustained almost single-handedly by Hooper, who smashed 74 not out off a mere 47 balls, with seven fours and two sixes. He needed to hit Prabhakar's final ball for six to tie; but he managed only two.
