It was Shepherd who had smashed 32 in the last over of Mumbai's innings to take them to 234. Stubbs almost paid him back by hitting him for three sixes in the 18th over.

That took Capitals to 201 for 5 after 19 overs, leaving them needing 34 from six balls. After Lalit Yadav managed only two on the first ball, the rest was just a formality. With every incoming batter looking for big hits, Coetzee picked up three wickets in that over to finish with figures of 4 for 34.

And that means, after playing four matches, Mumbai have registered their first win of IPL 2024. As a result, Capitals - with one win and four losses from five games - have slipped to the bottom.

Shiva Jayaraman: Prithvi Shaw and Abhishek Porel were the 32nd and 33rd ‘settled’ batters – those who had already scored 30 runs in the innings - to be dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah in the middle overs of the IPL since 2016, which was when Bumrah made it big in the league.

No other fast bowler has given his team more breakthroughs in the middle overs in this period. Shaw scored just 5 off eight balls from Bumrah and Porel 7 off seven. The two batters scored 95 off 55 balls from the other batters. Since 2016, Bumrah’s 33 wickets of such batters have come at an average 6.42 runs apiece and he has had an economy of 6.45 against them. No other bowler to dismiss 15 or more such batters averages better than Bumrah. No other bowler has enjoyed a better economy than Bumrah.

Stubbs has been brilliant, hitting his second fifty in two games. In the last match against KKR, he had hit a fifty off 28 balls. Today, he has reached there in just 19.

It has been only 15 days but we have already seen some brilliant yorkers this IPL. Add this Bumrah special to that list. Shaw was well set, batting on 66 off 39, before Bumrah sent down a thunderbolt of a yorker, at 141.3kph. Angled towards the leg stump, there was no mystery to it - it didn't move in the air - but such is Bumrah's accuracy that it beat Shaw and hit the base of the leg stump and took it out of its groove.

But Tristan Stubbs has come out and smashed two sixes off Chawla to keep Capitals' hopes alive.

Coming in at No. 3, Abishek Porel has struggled to get going. He is on 12 off 11 balls but Shaw has managed to keep Capitals' hopes alive.

He has hit Piyush Chawla for 6, 4, 4 to move to 46 off 29 balls, and take his side to 69 for 1 after eight overs. But Capitals need another 166 off 72 balls, at a rate of 13.83.

Here's an observation from Sudarshanan: During the timeout, Malinga and Coetzee had a longish conversation, even as Hardik gave others a pep talk. Chawla and Nabi then seemed to chat about field placements with Rohit just as they were dispersing.

... this time with the ball. Capitals got off to a slow start - 15 for no loss after three overs. So Warner tried to take on Shepherd. He slog-swept him for a huge six but Shepherd bowled the next one slower and wide outside off. Warner attempted to repeat the shot but ended up skying it towards mid-on where Hardik Pandya took an easy catch.

Mumbai were 202 for 5 after 19 overs, and it looked like they may reach 215. But Romario Shepherd changed the script completely by taking Nortje for 32 in the last over. That powered Mumbai to 234 for 5. Even the great Sachin Tendulkar could not help but stand and applaud.

It was a show of brute power. "It's my strength vs your strength when I'm at the crease," Shepherd had told ESPNcricinfo before the IPL. Nortje tried slower balls, pace-on deliveries, change of length, but nothing seemed to make a difference for Shpehered. That one over seems to have taken the game out of Capitals's reach.

Tim David was 4 off 6 and then 13 off 11 before cutting loose and hitting two sixes and a four off Khaleel and Nortje in four balls.

Nortje got Hardik, for 39 off 33, in the 18th over but not before conceding 16.

S Sudarshanan: Looks like the heat has got to Richardson, who's a bit sick and just walked off the field at fine leg from the media end. Pant asked the substitute who had drinks in that region to just get rid of his bib and enter the field for the last ball of that Ishant over but he did not. A sub from the dugout at the opposite end then walked in while physio Patrick Farhart walked along the periphery to attend to Richardson

Farhart waited in the middle for an extra few seconds after the timeout to check on Richardson, before getting the thumbs up.

Richardson bowled the next over, with Tim David hitting his first ball for a six.

Before today, Ishan Kishan had taken Axar Patel for 69 runs off 48 balls without getting out. Continuing the pattern, Kishan hit him for a boundary earlier in the day, and now, on the first ball of the 11th over, he slog-swept him for a six.

The next ball, Kishan smashed to the left of Axar who stuck his hand out and plucked it.

Axar, who had bowled just one over in the last game, finished his spell with figures of 4-0-35-2. But Mumbai are still in a strong position, going at more than ten an over.

In the lead-up to the match, all the focus was on Suryakumar Yadav, who had missed the first three games as he was recovering from an ankle surgery.

He came out to bat at No. 3, and Anrich Nortje welcomed him to the crease with a searing yorker. Surya survived that but fell on the very next ball. He looked to loft a length ball over mid-on but Jake Fraser-McGurk pedalled back to complete the catch.

"The loudest cheer for the wicket came from the air-conditioned room next to the press box," says Sudarshana."It is a hospitality box with lots of Capitals supporters, including Warner's family. The entire Wankhede went silent save for that section, where the supporters were jumping with joy seeing the back of Rohit and Suryakumar in quick succession."

After taking on Ishant, Rohit hit Jhye Richardson for two back-to-back sixes.

Here's S Sudarshanan from the venue: "Ishant had a deep square leg in place and Rohit scooped him to fine leg. Jhye Richardson started with fine leg and a good length ball from Richardson was flicked over deep square leg."

Axar Patel wasn't spared either. Rohit swept his first ball over fine leg before picking up a four three balls later.

In the next over, he smashed Lalit Yadav for three overs to move to 49 off 23 balls. But he fell to Axar on the same score. He stepped out but Axar shortened his length and bowled it quicker. Rohit looked to defend but was beaten and bowled.

Coming into this game, Ishant Sharma has had the wood over Rohit Sharma. In 40 balls, he had dismissed Rohit three times while giving away 48 runs.

But today, Rohit attacked him straightaway. First, he went down on one knee to scoop him over short fine leg. On the next ball, he lofted him over mid-off. That was followed by five wides down the leg side as Ishant failed to execute a slower ball. But he made a comeback, of sorts, by bowling four dots to end the over.

In five of the last six day games here, the totals were in the range of 185 and 200. It's a small venue with the square boundaries measuring 62 and 63 metres. Down the ground is 74 metres. So expect bowlers to bowl fuller.

The outfield looks brilliant. When it comes to the pitch, there's a little bit of grass around the good-length area. It's the same pitch where Mumbai played Rajasthan Royals. In that match, Trent Boult had swung out Mumbai's top order, but that was a night game.

Rishabh Pant has won the toss and Delhi Capitals have opted to bowl. Jhye Richardson and Lalit Yadav come in for Rasikh Salam and Mitchell Marsh.

Mumbai were also looking to bowl first. "Not getting a win under the belt has put pressure on us, but one win will bring a couple more," says Hardik Pandya. Mumbai have made three changes: Suryakumar comes in for Naman Dhir, Nabi comes in for Brevis and Romario comes for Maphaka.
