Alex Kontouri, Sri Lanka's Cypriot-born Australian physiotherapist, has
informed the Sri Lankan Cricket Board that he will not renew his contract
which expires shortly after the World Cup.
Kontouri, 34, has worked with the Sri Lanka side for seven and a half years
and this will be his third World Cup. Highly regarded amongst the players,
his departure will be a great loss for Sri Lanka cricket.
Although he has not ruled out further employment with Sri Lankan cricket,
possibly in a consultative or developmental role, he is expected to return
home to Australia.
Kontouri, a graduate of La Trobe University in Melbourne, worked at the
Victorian Institute of Sport before coming to Sri Lanka alongside coach Dav
Whatmore in November 1995.
Apart from being responsible for the day-to-day fitness and the overall
health of the national players, Kontouri has initiated and driven a project
to establish a professional network of regional cricket physiotherapists
throughout Sri Lanka to serve outstation cricketers.
