Devon Malcolm is to be flown home from the West Indies on Saturday with his tour future in doubt.
Malcolm is feared to have suffered cartilage damage to his right
knee and will be examined by a surgeon in Manchester on Monday.
England will make no decision on a replacement for the Derbyshire
man until they receive a full report.
If the damage is minor he could return in time for the second
Test but if it is more serious then his tour could be over.
Devon Malcolm is being forced to fly home with a knee injury he
collected bowling in the First Test
Physio Dave Roberts said: I feel there is a strong possibility
of cartilage damage to the outside of the right knee.
If we asked him to bowl again in the next game he could do irreparable damage.
Keith Fletcher would not be drawn on any possible replacement.
We've got people on standby in any event but we just have to wait
he said.
Devon Malcolm's knee injury is the latest to hit the England
bowlers on this tour so far.
Andy Caddick was out of action for a fortnight with a bruised
shin and is now sldelined again with a bruised foot.
Angus Fraser missed the First Test with a fractured index finger
while Alan Igglesden was hit on the elbow while batting in the
nets.
If a replacement is required Essex paceman Mark Ilott appears to
be favourite after his A team tour.
Andy Caddick and Mark Ramprakash will both be on the sidelines
for Saturday's one day clash against the West Indies.
Caddick is being treated for a poisoned foot while Nasser Hussain
comes in for Graham Thorpe leaving Mark Ramprakash on the sidelines.
Caddick's injury started as a septic little toe but the infection
has spread into the groin area.
Angus Fraser returns to the side after injury alongside his
Middlesex colleague Phil Tufnell.
