Canterbury Country was in contention to uplift the National Districts
Cup, a symbol of minor association cricket supremacy, from holder
Wellington City in the capital.
Canterbury Country was 84 for three at stumps last night in pursuit of
the home side's modest 170.
Left-arm medium-fast bowler Danny Bulman sparked the Wellington City
demise with an accurate spell of bowling and was rewarded with a
five-wicket bag.
Wellington had won the toss when the game started on Saturday but only
four overs play was possible before bad light then rain led to the day
being abandoned.
Rain got under the covers and the start of play was delayed until noon
yesterday but Country dominated the session as Wellington City crashed
to 80 for eight. Its lower order, led by captain Lance Dry, added 90
for the final two wickets to give Country a reasonable target.
Country also began badly, losing two early wickets, but an unbroken
fourth-wicket partnership between Harley James and Mark Patterson,
worth 37, has given it cause for optimism.
Wellington City opened its bowling with left-arm slow bowler Glen
White who performed that role in the Shell Cup competition and he
conceded just eight runs from 12 overs.
