†NEW ZEALAND v ENGLAND 1983-84

At Wellington, February 22

15-Apr-1985
At Wellington, February 22. England won by six wickets. Almost flawless outcricket, centred on Marks's five for 20, gave England an easy victory and clinched the series. New Zealand, winning the toss, began their innings believing no score much below 240 would be enough and effectively lost the match through taking overlong to realise that, on a pitch which made the ball hard to get away, they had set their sights too high. Marks, coming on for the tenth over at 18 for no wicket and finishing at 63 for five after 28, tucked the batsmen up around leg stump by varied flight and spin and picked off the top five when they attempted to attack. For England, under no pressure, Smith drove well and scored 60 of his 70 runs in boundaries.
Man of the Match: V. J. Marks. Attendance: 16,000.
