At Hamilton, February 12, 2013 (floodlit). New Zealand won by 55 runs. Toss: England.
England had a measure of control after choosing to field first, only for Brendon McCullum to take the game out of their reach with a late onslaught. He helped ensure 38 came from the last two overs, and left Broad nursing his most expensive Twenty20 analysis since India's Yuvraj Singh hit him for six sixes in an over at Durban in September 2007. England needed to pull off their highest successful chase, against a seaming ball under lights, but Mitchell McClenaghan - apparently still fired up after receiving a beamer from Dernbach at Auckland - removed Hales and Wright with successive deliveries in the second over. Only Jos Buttler's maiden international fifty held New Zealand up after that, with England this time losing the six count 10-2. Passed fit despite a jarred back, Morgan could barely lay a bat on the thrifty Ian Butler; earlier, a close shave with a flame-thrower on the boundary had left Morgan shaken and England unhappy at the machine's location.
