Nottinghamshire's Paul Franks, who made his senior England one-day debut in this year's NatWest Series, was voted Young Cricketer of the Year at this weekend's Cricket Writers' Club annual dinner.
Franks' progress has continued this season with fine performances for the Nottinghamshire Outlaws in the Norwich Union National League. Franks has moved rapidly through the England junior set up, notably helping England Under 19 side to victory in the 1998 World Cup. He was initially overlooked for the England A tour of Bangladesh and New Zealand last winter, but came in as a replacement for Chris Silverwood, and ended the tour being voted England A's best bowler with 31 wickets at 17.45.
The award, whose previous winners include current England players Nasser Hussain and Mike Atherton, as well as legends Ian Botham and Fred Trueman, is voted for annually by full members of the Cricket Writers' Club.
The other players nominated this year were Franks' Nottinghamshire colleague Chris Read, Carl Greenidge, Chris Schofield, David Sales, and Ryan Sidebottom.
