Roland Butcher Bermuda-bound

Former England Test cricketer Roland Butcher has been named as Bermuda's new national cricket coach. The announcement comes on the heels of Bermuda's loss against Canada in the deciding match of the recent Americas Cup tournament held in Toronto.

Butcher (46), was born in Barbados but played three Test matches and three one-day internationals for England during the 1980/81 season. He also played for Middlesex in the county championship and had a stint was the Australian state side, Tasmania in 1982-83. He is married with two children.

His immediate task will be preparing Bermuda for the West Indies annual regional one-day tournament, the Red Stripe Bowl to be held in this fall. He replaces local Allan Douglas, who was in the position on a part-time basis.

Mr. Butcher's mandate, as outlined in the advertised job description, will be to "assess, develop, manage and administer the coaching programmes of the Bermuda Cricket Board of Control which shall be designed to promote and develop cricket throughout the island at all levels. In addition, the postholder is responsible for coaching and participating in the selection of all national teams and for providing technical advice and assistance to the BCBC, clubs and school teaching on coaching and training matters."

His tenure and salary details were not released.
