David Sales has stepped down as Northamptonshire's captain for the forthcoming season after four years in charge.
Sales took over in 2004 from Mike Hussey but Northamptonshire were immediately relegated to the second division of the County Championship. And in spite of his encouraging form - he hit 1384 runs, averaging over 55 last season - he feels it's time the club gave someone else a chance.
"It was a difficult decision to make as I have enjoyed enormously my time as captain," Sales said, "but I feel the time is right to provide the opportunity for the club to choose someone else to have the privilege of leading the side.
"Of course I will give whoever is selected my full support and I am looking forward to the new season and helping the club towards challenging in all competitions."
Northants' board will decide on Sales's replacement at their next meeting.
