South Africa v Australia 1999-2000

At Durban, April 12 (day/night)

15-Apr-2001
At Durban, April 12 (day/night). South Africa won by six wickets. Toss: South Africa.
Pollock marked his ascent to the captaincy with a superb opening spell, trapping Mark Waugh with his seventh delivery and not conceding a run until his 22nd. Despite a belligerent 51 off 40 balls by Gilchrist, Australia were in dire straits at 120 for seven. Martyn then played superbly, doubling that score with lower-order support. Boucher, who had already equalled the wicket-keeping record in limited-overs internationals by holding five catches, dropped what looked like a straightforward sixth when the ball looped off the top edge of Lee's bat. Only 15 days earlier, Kirsten had been carried off the field at Sharjah with a spine injury. Now, showing immense character, he and Kallis pulled South Africa's innings around after a shaky start. Evening dew made conditions awkward for Warne, and McGrath alone bowled consistently. Rhodes concluded matters with a lively 46 from 40 balls.
Man of the Match: G. Kirsten. Attendance: 21,638.
