Gerald Majola, the CEO of the South African board, has assured Ray Jennings that the board will honour his contract for another year even if he doesn't retain the job. But Majola wasn't willing to reveal too much on the role Jennings was expected to play.
"It is even possible we may have to have further discussions with the candidates we have seen already," said Majola to the news24.com website. He added that a fulltime coach would be appointed on May 19.
Jennings was appointed as the interim coach in September last year, after Eric Simmons was sacked. South Africa have had a mixed time since then with defeats against India and England followed by a comprehensive fourth consecutive series triumph against West Indies. However, there are indications that an overseas coach could take over with Rodney Marsh's name being bandied about as a possible option.
Majola was also delighted with the series win against the West Indies and acknowledged Graeme Smith's influence. "Smith is growing in stature as a captain, and that also contributes to the success of the team."
