Kuldeep Yadav began the ODI series much like he began the T20Is: in Manchester, he took a five-for. At Trent Bridge, he went a step further. By doing so, he became the first left-arm wristspinner to take a six-for at a venue where England had broken the record for the highest team total twice in the last two completed ODIs. While all other frontline Indian bowlers went at over five, Kuldeep went at just 2.50. Brad Hogg's 5 for 32 against West Indies at MCG was the previous-best by a left-arm wristspinner in ODIs.
Kuldeep's 6 for 25 are also the best by a left-arm spinner in ODI history. He eclipsed Murali Kartik, who took 6 for 27 against Australia in Mumbai in 2007. Kuldeep's figures were also the fourth-best by an Indian and the best by an Indian against England in England. Stuart Binny's 6 for 4 against Bangladesh remains the best by an Indian currently.
Kuldeep's bowling figures at Trent Bridge are also the best by a spinner in England, surpassing Shahid Afridi's 5 for 11 against Kenya at the 2004 Champions Trophy. Muttiah Muralitharan's 5 for 34 at Lord's in 1998 were the previous best by a spinner against England in England.
Rohit emulates Kuldeep's feat
If the first half was set up by Kuldeep, Rohit Sharma lit up India's chase. His unbeaten 134 is the highest by an Indian against England in England. Virat Kohli's 107 at Cardiff in 2011 was the previous highest.
This was Rohit's 18th ODI century, his seventh while chasing and first against England. This is the seventh successive ODI series or tournament in which he has scored at least one century. He has hit centuries in 12 of the last 14 series.
Captain Kohli's prosperous 50 ODIs
The first ODI at Trent Bridge was India's 50th ODI under Kohli's captaincy. India have won 39 of those, the joint-most with Clive Lloyd and Ricky Ponting for most wins by a captain in his first 50 ODIs in charge. Among Indians, MS Dhoni had 31 wins in the same time frame. Kohli's win-loss ratio of 3.90 is currently the best for any captain with minimum of 50 matches.
