Dec 22: Sydney Thunder vs Perth Scorchers, Canberra

Pro Tip: As a captain, Ashton Turner averages 42.11 at a strike rate of 143.01 in T20s whereas his average drops down to 17.66 when he is not captaining. Since he is captaining the scorchers, make sure you have him in your team.
Our XI: Usman Khawaja, Alex Hales, Callum Ferguson, Alex Ross, Daniel Sams, Jonathan Cook, Josh Inglis, Joe Clarke, Ashton Turner, Jhye Richardson, Andrew Tye
Substitutes: Ben Cutting, Tanveer Sangha, Colin Munro, Mitchell Marsh
Player availability: Sydney Thunder's Adam Milne is likely to make his BBL debut after recovering from an injury.
We might not always be able to tip you off about late injury (or other relevant) updates, so please finalise your team after the toss.
Captain: Ashton Turner
The 27-year-old middle-order batsman endured a couple of below-par years in T20 cricket. However, he is back to his best, which was evident in the couple of knocks he played so far - 24 (16) and 39 (17) in BBL 2020-21.
Vice-captain: Jhye Richardson
At the start of the tournament, there were some concerns over the fitness of 23-year-old Richardson after undergoing a shoulder surgery but he made an impressive comeback with figures of 3.4-0-20-3 so far in the tournament. His three wickets were A Finch, Shaun Marsh and Marcus Stoinis, which says a lot about his quality. He picked up 15 wickets in 14 games at an average of 25 in the last edition of BBL.
Hot Picks
Daniel Sams: Sams' unbeaten 25-ball 65 in the last game against the Heat will be remembered for a long time. He also picked up a couple of wickets which earned him Man of the Match award too. Although it is very tough to replicate that batting performance in every game, he will get you points with his bowling. He has taken 18 wickets in death overs since BBL 09, the most in the tournament, at an astounding average of 8.77.
Alex Hales: The second-highest scorer in BBL 09 with 576 runs in 17 games started this season with a fine 41-ball 46. Since the start of 2019, Hales is the third-highest scorer in T20s, with 2256 runs in 80 innings at an average of 30.90 and a strike rate of 144.33, only behind Babar Azam and KL Rahul.
Callum Ferguson: The Sydney Thunder captain started his season by top-scoring for his team with a 35-ball 54 against the Melbourne Stars. Since the 2018-19 season, nobody has scored more than Ferguson for Thunder - 872 runs in 33 games at an average of 31.14 and a strike rate of 131.32.
Differential Picks
Josh Inglis: One of the top ten run-scorers in BBL 09, Inglis has not made any significant contributions with the bat yet in this edition. But his strike rate of 153.99 in BBL 09 suggests if he finds form, he is going to get you points in bulk. He can also get you points behind the stumps.
Usman Khawaja: Khawaja had an indifferent start to the tournament scoring 7 and 17 so far. He had a decent outing last year, scoring 388 runs in 17 games with three 50-plus scores. After getting overlooked for the Test series against India, he will be determined to score runs.
Alternate Scenarios
  • All three available spin bowling options for the Thunder are good. You can pick any of Cook, Sangha or Chris Green.
  • Mitchell Marsh can replace Joe Clarke, while Ben Cutting can be an alternative for Alex Ross.
