Otago cruised to a nine-wicket win over Auckland at Dunedin, making surprising easy weather of a target of 171 in a relatively low-scoring match. Mohammad Wasim made a sparkling run-a-ball 94, with 19 fours and one six, and Craig Cumming played the anchor with a solid 63 not out.
Cumming, who had top-scored with 39 in Otago's first-innings score of 154, played patiently as the runs dried up after Wasim's dismissal. Chris Gaffaney spent 51 minutes at the crease for his 6 not out, but the time spent turned out to be irrelevant. Otago's victory got them six points in the points table, but they still remained in fifth place in the championship.
Bad weather curtailed play at Rangiora, but Canterbury and Central Districts were always likely to draw anyway, with not enough time left in the game for any side to force a result. Nevertheless, the 27 overs that were bowled saw a keen tussle between bat and ball, as Canterbury fought back from 1 for 2 to reach 96 for 5. Chris Harris, coming in at 18 for 3, remained not out on 31, adding 62 with Neil Broom, who made 31. Ewan Thompson, with 2 for 18, was the pick of the bowlers.
