National League: Division One
Glamorgan v Kent, Cardiff
Scorecard
Scorecard
Glamorgan, the defending National League champions, strolled to their second
win in as many days, overhauling Kent's 192 for 9 with 8.4 overs to spare.
It was a good day for Robert Croft, Glamorgan's stand-in captain, who
followed his 3 for 33 with a rapid 59. Michael Powell added 58, then Matthew
Maynard took his side home with 39* from 38 balls. Earlier Robert Key
clouted 68 for Kent, but apart from Ed Smith (33) and Geraint Jones (31),
no-one else hung around for long.
Gloucestershire v Leicestershire, Bristol
Scorecard
Scorecard
Gloucestershire came out on top on a high-scoring day in which 565 runs were
scored. Gloucs ran up 311 for 4 in their 45 overs. Phil Weston anchored the
innings with 92, including 10 fours. He put on 139 with Craig Spearman, who
bashed a quickfire 89 from 66 balls, with nine fours and four sixes, and 100
with Tim Hancock, who blasted six sixes himself in an equally rapid 82.
Charlie Dagnall (3 for 52) proved to be something of a brake, but the target
was always too big for Leicestershire, especially once Virender Sehwag
departed for 1. Darren Stevens continued his good form with a run-a-ball 65,
then Phil DeFreitas hit out for 90 from only 64 balls, with eight fours and
four sixes, as Leicestershire reached 254 to go down fighting by 57 runs -
their third defeat in three National League outings this season. Martyn
Ball, the offspinner, came in for some punishment but finished with 3 for
59.
Worcestershire v Surrey, Worcester
Scorecard
Scorecard
Surrey may have made a sketchy start in the County Championship, but there's
nothing wrong with their one-day form: they recorded their third National
League win out of three at New Road. But it was close. After restricting
Worcs to 244 for 5 - Graeme Hick smacked a quick 81 from 67 balls, and
Kadeer Ali added 52 - Surrey seemed to be skating home at 209 for 3. Ally
Brown (81) and Mark Ramprakash (67) put on 153 for the second wicket, but
Kabir Ali (3 for 43) and Nantie Hayward (3 for 66) upset the applecart. It
was left to last man James Ormond to hit the winning boundary and keep up
the 100% record.
Yorkshire v Essex, Headingley
Scorecard
Scorecard
It was a calamitous day for Yorkshire, who crashed to their lowest score in
any form of one-day cricket, 54 all out (their previous-lowest was 56, in a
Sunday League match at Edgbaston in 1995) to lose by 157 runs. It could have
been even worse: Yorkshire were 24 for 7 before Ryan Sidebottom clouted 17
not out to become the only man in double figures. The damage was done by
medium-pacer Graham Napier, with 4 for 18, and Scott Brant (4 for 25).
Earlier Essex had managed 211 for 6 in their 45 overs, with Will Jefferson
(57) and Aftab Habib(50) both making half-centuries. Just to complete
Yorkshire's miserable day, Darren Gough limped off after bowling only 3.1
overs, with what appeared to be a hamstring injury. It isn't, however,
thought to be a recurrence of the injuries that restricted him so much last
year.
National League: Division Two
Durham v Lancashire, Chester-le-Street
Scorecard
Scorecard
Durham were beaten by Scotland yesterday, and Lancashire completed a
miserable Bank Holiday weekend for them by waltzing to a straightforward
five-wicket victory. Gary Pratt made an undefeated 66, but Andy Flintoff (3
for 46) and Durham old boy John Wood (2 for 42) ensured that the eventual
target wouldn't be too taxing. Lancashire made a sticky start, but
overhauled Durham's 186 for 8 with 16 balls to spare, with Alec Swann (73*)
pacing his innings to perfection. That man Flintoff rounded things off with
a 24-ball 42, 38 of which came in boundaries.
Hampshire v Middlesex, Southampton
Scorecard
Scorecard
Middlesex maintained their 100% record in the National League this season
with an exciting last-gasp victory when Ben Hutton clouted the final ball of
the game to the boundary. Hampshire were indebted to Robin Smith (92 in 132
balls, with 11 fours) for their total of 198 for 5, and it looked enough
when Wasim Akram strutted his stuff for the fabulous figures of 9-4-17-3.
But Paul Weekes gritted it out for 53 in 114 balls, David Nash (29) and
Abdul Razzaq (30) chipped in, and Hutton was able to finish it with a
flourish.
Nottinghamshire v Derbyshire, Trent Bridge
Scorecard
Scorecard
A magnificent century by Kevin Pietersen, who finished with 130*, took
Nottinghamshire to victory in the last over of a high-scoring game.
Pietersen, tall and solid, thumped 13 fours and five sixes in his 109-ball
knock, and was still there to clunk the winning boundary off Nathanm
Dunmelow, with last man Stephen Randall at the other end. Earlier Derbyshire
recovered from 23 for 4 to post a challenging 252, with Steve Selwood (67)
and Dominic Hewson (50) putting on 96. The South African double act of Steve
Elworthy (4 for 41) and Greg Smith (3 for 48) took most of the wickets.
Sussex v Northamptonshire, Hove
Scorecard
Scorecard
Chris Adams celebrated his 33rd birthday with a century, but it was all in
vain as Northants maintained their 100% National League record with a third
straight win. Adams made 109*, cracking eight fours and four sixes, and
piled on 183 for the fourth wicket with Robin Martin-Jenkins (68*) after
Sussex had slipped to 27 for 3. Chasing 218, Northants also stuttered at the
start, losing Mike Hussey for 3 and Mark Powell for 9, but Phil Jaques, who
hit his maiden first-class century last week, dug in for 68. Jeff Cook added
49, then Gerard Brophy (35*) took his side to victory with just two balls to
spare.
