Young Cricketer Hales joins Notts

Newly-promoted Nottinghamshire have secured the services of the MCC Young Cricketer, Alex Hales, on a two-year contract.

Hales, an 18 year-old opener, made a big impression while on trial with Notts Second XI, scoring 218 against Derbyshire in only his second appearance and adding a century and two 90s in his next three matches.

He had already made 175 for MCC YCs against Middlesex earlier in the season and Nottinghamshire believe they have landed themselves a star of the future.

"It's been my ambition to play county cricket since I was 14 and I'm delighted to have signed for Notts," said Hales. "It's a brilliant set-up and all of the players were very welcoming to me. I know there's a big step for me to take to get into the first team, but I'm aiming to string together some runs for the Seconds and hopefully get an opportunity."

This week, Hales was named as Notts Second XI Player of the Season, and the club's assistant manager Wayne Noon said: "Alex has done what every trialist dreams about and taken his chance with both hands.

"Every time he went to the crease to bat he impressed and looked the part. He's got a bit of character about him as well and thoroughly deserved a two-year contract."

Hales, 6'5" and right-handed, was born in Hillingdon and played for Hertfordshire Colts before moving to Buckinghamshire, where he played in the Minor Counties Championship in 2006.

"Alex is a naturally talented striker of the ball and had a great spell while on trial with Notts," said Hale's coach at MCC, Clive Radley. "We've had four of our squad sign for counties this year and I'm delighted for all of them. Notts have spoken about strengthening the links between us and hopefully we'll see more players coming through in the future."
