Zarar five-for restricts Hyderabad to 245

Group A

Asad Zarar, the right-arm seamer, finished with figures of 5 for 67 as Faisalabad restricted Hyderabad to 245 at the Iqbal Stadium. The only innings of note from Hyderabad came from opener Zahid Khan, who scored a career-best 95 off 188 balls, including 12 boundaries. Faisalabad were six for no loss at the close of play.

Group leaders Habib Bank Limited confirmed their supremacy by restricting Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) to 190 for 8 at the Sheikhupura Staidum. After being sent in, WAPDA were immediately on the back foot when wicketkeeper Zulqarnain Haider was dismissed by Shahid Nazir on the first ball of the match. But Tariq Aziz and Atiq-ur-Rehman added 70 runs for the second wicket to steady the ship. Rehman fell for 32, but Aziz continued, reaching 74 off 174 balls, and adding 52 runs for the fourth wicket with Bilal Khilji (17) before being bowled by left-arm spinner Mohammad Aslam. Aslam went on to claim three more wickets, finishing with 4 for 28 off 22 overs.

Karachi Whites crawled to 178 for 3 after being put in by Multan at the UBL Sports Complex. Karachi got off to a poor start, losing two wickets for 34 runs, before they were rescued by a 109-run stand between Atif Ali and Khalid Latif. Ali batted for close to four hours for his 73, which came off 136 balls and included six boundaries. Opener Latif batted even longer, crossing the five-and-a-half hour mark to remain not out on 70 off 260 balls with six fours and a six. Asim Kamal, captaining Karachi in place of Mohammad Sami - who was selected for the Pakistan Test squad, was at the other end, not out on 10.

Waqas Ahmed, coming in at No.9, smashed an unbeaten 54 off 43 balls to take Lahore Ravi to 285 for 8 against Sui Southern Gas Corporation (SSGC) at the Lahore Country Club. Earlier, Lahore were off to a good start, as Kashif Siddiq (62) and Sohail Ahmed (48) adding 116 runs for the first wicket. But Lahore lost their way, stumbling to 150 for 5, before they were rescued by a 54-run sixth-wicket stand between Arsalan Mir (42) and Junaid Zia (46). Ahmed's late-order hitting ensured that Lahore were put in a position of respectability.

Seamers Imran Malik and Mohammad Ali claimed four wickets apiece, taking 4 for 48 and 4 for 36 respectively, as Sialkot dismissed Pakistan Customs for a paltry 145 at the Jinnah Stadium. The only resistance from the Customs came from Yasir Shah, the left-arm spinner, who reached his maiden first-class fifty during the course of his 51. Sialkot were 69 for 2 at the close of play.

Group B

Shadab Kabir, the left-hand opening batsman, scored an unbeaten 126 to take Karachi Whites to 272 for 4 against Abbottabad at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium. Kabir, who has played in five Tests and three ODIs for Pakistan, took his career aggregate past 6,000 runs en route to reaching his 11th first-class hundred. Kabir also added 143 runs for the fourth wicket with captain Mansoor Khan, who recorded a career-best 69.

Kamran Sajid scored 57 as Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) reached 214 for 3 against Islamabad on a truncated opening day at the Diamond Cricket Club. Only 71 overs were bowled, but PIA made use of the available time to get off to a positive start, captain Khurram Manzoor scoring 38 off 54 balls, as 52 runs were added for the first wicket. Manzoor's opening partner, Agha Sabir adopted a more steady approach, scoring 45 off 109 balls. Shehzad Azam, the right-arm seamer, took the wickets of Manzoor and Sajid but with Shoaib Khan snr remaining unbeaten on 46, PIA can look to seize the initiative tomorrow.

Rawalpindi, relying on Adnan Mufti's 69, scored 213 for 6 against Lahore Shalimar at the Mirpur Cricket Stadium. Rawalpindi were stuttering at 38 for 3 before Mufti and Awais Zia, who remained unbeaten on 49, came to the rescue.

A total of 15 wickets fell on the first day of the match between Peshawar and Sui Northern Gas Pipeline Limited (SNGPL) at the Arbab Niaz Stadium. Peshawar were bowled out for 158, with right-arm fast-medium bowler Tauqeer Hussain taking 4 for 27, but they had SNGPL reeling at 52 for 5 to leave the match interestingly poised. For Peshawar, new-ball bowlers Nauman Habib (2-29) and Imran Khan (3-19) shared the wickets.

Shoaib Khan jnr played a captain's innings of 81 to take Quetta to 200 for 5 against Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited at the Khan Research Laboratory Ground. Allrounder Jalat Khan was unbeaten on 52 when stumps were drawn.
