Zimbabwe v England
At Bulawayo, October 10
15-Apr-2003
At Bulawayo, October 10. England won by 70 runs. Toss: England. International debut: S. M. Ervine.
Having manoeuvred themselves into a position to assault England's total, Zimbabwe's
inexperienced middle order lost their nerve. Injuries to Hussain and Streak meant Trescothick led
England for the first time, only 16 months after his international debut, while Campbell became
Zimbabwe's third captain of the series. Early pace from Friend could not prevent an opening stand
of 101 in 15 overs, England's best start yet, as Trescothick and Knight were particularly hard on
Olonga. But the occasional off-spin of Marillier - seven years after he broke both femurs in a
car accident - reined England in and removed their top four. They still reached an imposing 280;
Collingwood was especially strong off his legs, racing to 77 from 90 balls, with good support
from Flintoff. In reply, Grant Flower (bouncing back from scores of 0, 2, and 1) and Wishart
advanced to 169 for three with 15 overs left. However, the loss of Flower, whose 96 from 101
balls had provided the impetus, left his colleagues too much to do. Regular departures prevented
acceleration, and Paul Grayson picked up his first England wickets with his left-arm spin a year
after his surprise debut in Kenya.
Man of the Match: P. D. Collingwood.
