Asia Cup 2012 March 14, 2012

Angelo Mathews out of Asia Cup

56

Sri Lanka have been dealt a blow as their allrounder Angelo Mathews was ruled out of the Asia Cup due to a calf injury. Mathews had missed the finals of the recent Commonwealth Bank series in Australia due to the same problem. No replacement has yet been named.

"The last couple of days Angelo has had some fitness tests, he hasn't pulled through those well, so we made a call to send him back home," Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene said. "He will try to get ready for the Test matches [against England] that starts in about ten days' time. The selectors back home will decide [on] and send a replacement for us."

Sri Lanka are already without another of their allrounders, Thisara Perera, who picked up a back injury in the final league match of the CB series and hasn't played since. That leaves Sri Lanka short of allrounders, and they needed Tillakaratne Dilshan to bowl his quota of ten overs in the opening game against India. They had no part-time bowlers in the XI, and when Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir were going strong, had to turn to Chamara Kapugedera, who is used so occasionally that he has only two wickets in his 90-match ODI career.

The team have still not taken a decision on whether another of their injured players, pace spearhead Lasith Malinga, will play against Pakistan tomorrow. "Malinga played through injury in the final two matches of the CB series, so we decided to give him a break yesterday [against India]," Jayawardene said. "Yesterday he bowled a bit, he will be bowling today as well, and after his bowling session we will take a call on him tomorrow."

Sri Lanka had their first full-fledged training session of the tournament this afternoon. Malinga was present at the session, and bowled a spell over which he gradually built up to full pace. He followed that up with some batting practice as well.

Sri Lanka not required dis bowler.... coz they have already good bowler compare to Angelo Mathews... so there are no effect on Sri Lanka... but ya little effect...

Angelo mathews is a good all rounder and definitely a prospect for the future. But if he keeps getting injured like this he is going to be a liability. In his early twenties he has already gotten injured 3-4 times. He should work on his fitness and learn from other youngsters like Kohli and Raina playing non stop cricket and IPL and still giving in all their energy in the field.

SL should take lessons from OZ in selections, to be unsentimental and based on talent and form instead of reputations, favouritism, wishful thinking etc. They always try to pull something out of the hat. This is the reason for never finishing with the trophies. Reincarnation of Kapu was mind boggling. They didn't need yet another batsman in that CB final. If they did, it should have been Thilan, already on standby. His batting and bowling as in OZ series in SL would have been ideal. And what about Dhammika? He should have replaced the injured Malinga. The way he already demonstrated, his batting would have been good for that extra 15 runs. Carrying a half-fit Mathews means they are always scrambling for replacements at the tail end of tournaments.

@KEVINSL India is playing without Zaheer, Umesh and Sehwag(possibly the most devastating batsman in asian conditions). Making silly excuses only makes you sound like a sore loser. We have beaten SL twice in the CB series with Mathews and Perera in the side. It does not matter who plays. We will just pummel SL anyplace, anytime! I thin Pak will win the contest tomorrow. All they need to do is to remove 2 of the top 3 quickly and the rest will fall like a deck of cards!

  • on March 14, 2012, 19:33 GMT

Middle order brittle and bowling thin without the the two real allrounders Angelo and Thisara. Maha is not the same with his batting and fielding... hope he will strike form with bat. Kapu ???? what is he doing there ? Banuka would have been a better get or even Dimuth who is more a test player. Upul Tharanga's limitations in placement is exposed now. Some one needs to help him. Also we need a good physio + sports doctor to help Mathews.

  • WTEH on March 14, 2012, 18:17 GMT

Why don't you lose Kapugedara and get a bowler in that place. Then you do not need to put Dilshan all that trouble and also any bowler would be capable enough to get more runs to the side by batting than Kapugedara.

  • praveen4honestremark on March 14, 2012, 17:33 GMT

I am Backing Pakistan to win tomorrow's match(15th march) with Srilanka. Even though Srilanka may look strong but it can't handle Pakistan Attack tomorrow. Go Pakistan Brothers, all the best win the match.Pakistan will win the match- From Indian fan.

  • johnathonjosephs on March 14, 2012, 17:31 GMT

Huge loss, both Matthews and Perera. Hope their fit for when England comes. This Lankan side is too tired and burned out to win the Asia Cup

  • Sports4Youth on March 14, 2012, 17:23 GMT

True that the loss of mathews could hurt sri lanka but also farez haharoof has been doing fine as an all rounder. on paper sri lanka is definate favorites but recently both teams have been very unpredictable with some unpredictable players on both sides. have to see how they perfom on a day.

  • ChrisPerera on March 14, 2012, 16:39 GMT

Dear Angelo, You are getting injured regularly. It is mainly due to muscle imbalances. You need to work fix the imbalances first, before playing again. Therefore, I suggest you need to consult a qualified strength & conditioning coach ASAP.

  • csowmi7 on March 14, 2012, 16:36 GMT

whichever tournaments Sri Lanka do bad in become useless for them. The WC finals was also useless and i guess just a formality. Ehh forget the CB series finals Sri Lanka played good cricket and thats enough satisfaction I suppose.

  • ExplicitPlatinum on March 14, 2012, 16:25 GMT

As a Pak fan, I'm disappointed with Matthews flying home. I was hoping to see a great fight from him tomorrow but it's good news for Pak not to be facing him. Shame that he isn't able to carry on till the end of the tournament as he is one of the best Allrounders out there. I can feel the pain SL fans have of him flying away just like us when Junaid had to go home. But I hope we have a good game tomorrow my SL brothers.

  • kiss898 on March 14, 2012, 14:38 GMT

im dissapointed that still people want to drop maharoof in the present situation...he is the most consistant ODI bowler in australia along with kulasekara and did bowl well in the 1st match of Asia cup too... he is been treated very unfairly in the past...he took a 5 for including a hat trick in the last Asia cup and was dropped immiedietly in the next tour...2007 WC he took a 4 for and won the man of the match, n in the next match which was WC semi final he was dropped.... and im not sure why SL selectors are persisting with sachithra and seekuge as spinners... they are good for nothing bowlers...they should try out a spinner who could turn the bowl..seekuge is picked based on division 2 premier league performances while there are many others who perform well in division 1 domestic tournament.....exclusion of randiv is also very dissapointing...his last two ODI performances were 5/43 and 2/40 against eng and aus respectively

  • on March 14, 2012, 14:31 GMT

Thilan Samaraweera was the official stand-by for the CB series. That was a mere eye wash after ignoring him from SA ODIs. I am not saying he should be a permanent member of SL ODI team taking into account 2015 world Cup. But the issue is in his case selectors are always waiting to find some excuse to keep him out. I think Mahela-Sanga-Dilshan combination also does not want him in the side. As any reliable batsman performing consistently will be a threat either to them or to their favorites like Kapugedara. It was Dilshan who stated once in SA that Thilain was dropped from test side partly because he failed in England tour. How can someone averaging over 50 in a test series be considered a failure? It is unfortunate that Thilan gave up bowling. He was the second best off spinner in the island next to Murali for a long time. He was never a part-timer, just look at his first class bowling stats. Currently he is averaging nearly 100 in local first class tournament.

  • ProdigyA on March 14, 2012, 14:10 GMT

  • Perera32 on March 14, 2012, 14:06 GMT

Huge loss to the SL team and I hope he gets well in time for the England Tests. Why are people defending Kapugedara, he failed in the WC Final and in the CB series Final, dont bring him back into the national team.

  • zenboomerang on March 14, 2012, 13:54 GMT

Really sad news Angelo... Loved watching you in Oz & a great prospect for SL for the next 10+ yrs... Can't wait for your return to Oz next summer... Recover & see you again soon...

  • on March 14, 2012, 13:17 GMT

With the tight schedules that current SL team is going through, I think SL should give some chances to second level players. Sad, but Kapu sholud be sent back. SL should not loose their focus dispite the amount of games they play ...

  • sl_supporter on March 14, 2012, 13:17 GMT

Agree with most people here, SL players deserve a rest and best thing that can happen to them is not make it to the finals. Very poor from SL selectors or they should have used this tournament to try youngsters. I am surprised to see Mahela is not bowling Thrimanne more with his medium pacers. He did a good job in Australia when given the opportunity. Kapugedara, well this explains lot about Mr de Mel, why not try someone like Bhanuka or some other prospective young player?

  • nickydude on March 14, 2012, 13:05 GMT

  • truthhh on March 14, 2012, 12:47 GMT

giving a chance for Shaminda Eranga is much better,he should play tomorrow match instead of Maharoof,it;s true maharoof can blow well, but he can not take wickets easily in these kind of pitches.shaminda eranga must play tomorrow match&otherthing is sanga should take responsibility abt team,in recentpast he mostly considers abt his personal records,i saw in CB series he played some shots like school boy cricketer, wasted so many delivers.srilanka selectors must consider about 1down batsman, sanga is not suitable for 1down&we won many matches in CB series, thanks goes to Dinesh Chandimal,if chandi fails srilanka definitely going fail, that happed in so many times,we have to give chance for new comers,ya it;s true sanga did well for srilanka in past, but now it;s not happing.anyway i hope SL will play good cricket against pak!!

  • Tokai69 on March 14, 2012, 12:15 GMT

I don't understand some people, why they are telling it's a useless tournament. This is the biggest tournament after WC in Asia. I don't think CB tournament is anyway a better tournament than Asia cup. Why you are not respecting your regeonal teams. Please focus the game not the nation itself!

  • athusri71 on March 14, 2012, 12:12 GMT

Bring spining allrounder Jeewan mendis for the replacement of Anjelo.

  • on March 14, 2012, 12:07 GMT

I also think they should rest Malinga and Mahroof. Even Sanga and Dilshan. Get them all ready for the TEST series that is about 100 times more important than this useless Asia cup. Get the Under 19 team over here so they can have a good exporsure.

  • Tamiz101 on March 14, 2012, 12:00 GMT

Jeewan & Suraj by all means deserves a come back call to e Lankan squad ! let's go easy on this lad, kapu ... he shud be given more chances in e domestic arena .. dont forget the fact that both the chances Kapu got was @ a wrong time ! he didn't have much time to play himself in, it was always a catch up game he had to play, which he failed eventually. As a bats... who is out of form, that wudn't have been an ideal situ to come and play his natural game. Admit the fact that he had some poor shot selections though. Shud've played much more sensibly . ! Angi, Thisara & Maali a huge loss at the moment ! hope Maali will be fit for tomo's game !

  • KEVINSL on March 14, 2012, 11:54 GMT

  • WRX_STi on March 14, 2012, 11:51 GMT

Please send Kapugedara home as well. Sri Lanka lost CB series final and Asia cup first game against India due to very poor batting performance from Kapugedara ...

SL is short of bowlers, yet they dropped spinner Rangana Herath, who played very well in CB series and open the door for Chamara Kapugedara who has poor batting records in international cricket.

  • CricketPissek on March 14, 2012, 11:42 GMT

best news for sri lanka cricket recently. mathews needs rest before the england test series. the timing of this asia cup is appalling.

  • on March 14, 2012, 11:37 GMT

  • keptalittlelow on March 14, 2012, 11:36 GMT

SL are a pretty resilient side, dont be fooled by Angelo's absent, SL can still beat Pakistan who has a batting side as strong as a cookie.

Thats an enormous loss for SL...Get well Soon Mathews

  • ham1990 on March 14, 2012, 11:27 GMT

I don't really think SL are taking this tournament seriously...it's a joke to have play this 'dinky' tournament after a gruelling schedule in Australia and South Africa. As a fan, I think they're better off not getting into the finals and going home a couple of days earlier, let alone letting their star players to injure themselves further. An India - Pakistan final would be the only thing to bring this dull tournament alive.

  • on March 14, 2012, 11:23 GMT

The selectors would have sent Jeewan instead of Seekuge & does Kapugedara warrant a place for his disgraceful performances so far in ODI's - De Mel is like a joker who has sent a bunch of injury prone team for this tournament & now looking for replacements - people have lost interest of the game & I have a feeling it's the same in the team as well

  • lankanlioncric on March 14, 2012, 11:14 GMT

send kapugethara back too a bataman should have atleast 50% success rate. meaning out of 2 games, atleast one game should score above 30. last 5 kapu innings(including 1st class) 0,7,0,2,1,0,10,114. his success rate is 12%.
