Corporates show interest in PPL

60

Four companies have shown interest in the PCB's initiative to launch an international Twenty20 league in Pakistan. A proposal to launch Pakistan Premier League (PPL) will be presented by the companies to the board next week.

"We have invited the companies to present us the plans," PCB chief operating officer, Subhan Ahmed told ESPNcricinfo. "We are thrilled to see the initial response but we have to sit and look into the modalities and feasibility of having such an event in Pakistan involving foreign players."

Ahmed said that international player participation was necessary for the success of such a competition. However, Pakistan has been unable to host international cricket since March 2009, when Sri Lanka's team bus was attacked by terrorists.

"I can't say that we are sure whether to play in Pakistan or abroad. But PCB has serious intention to hold the PPL. The situation definitely has improved and that is why the British [Universities] team is here in Pakistan."

Former PCB president, Nasim Ashraf, floated the original idea in 2007. While, the idea was scrapped later scrapped in Pakistan, similar leagues have cropped up in Bangladesh, Australia and South Africa after the success of the IPL.

"PPL was held back for several reason in the past, but this time we are very keen and serious on launching our league as an attempt to bring the international cricket back in the country."

T-20 Overload.. ICC should eliminate other T-20s, it messes up international schedules. There should be a limit of how much of this a country can be a host of or organizer. But then again, ICC appears helpless against the bigger money shaker cricket boards.

  • on April 6, 2012, 15:04 GMT

PPL will be a commercial success no matter what-the model is true and tested. The idea of having foreign players of Pakistani origin and some independent minded players from Scotland/Ireland is an intriguing one.

  • Malti65 on April 6, 2012, 12:40 GMT

Good. Looks like Pakistan has finally learnt something from the success of BPL. Now you can expect to bring internationl players to pakistan. This should be the first step of bringing international cricket to pakistan.

Folks. There is already a corporate sponsored tournament called Faysal Bank T20. Corporations bid on teams like Lahore Lions, Rawalpindi Rams, Peshawar Panthers, and Karachi Dolphins. This is a very successful tournament. All that is needed to be called it a Premier League is that these clubs be owned by a person or corporation, instead of an association. As for foreign players, there are a lots of Pakistani origin players playing for other countries e.g. Rizwan Cheema of Canada, Imran Tahir of South Africa, Usman Khawaja of Australia etc. I do not know why the idea of PPL came so late.

  • Ahmed00 on April 5, 2012, 15:58 GMT

I don,t think that a tournament type league will be successful in Pakistan. Instead of a two or three week tournament; Pakistan should start a league for a whole season like English Premiere League of Soccer with less money and just local players. Just two matches in a week on weekends with one team must be playing at its home ground. People are tired of Stage Shows and Movies and believe me; everyone will go to watch the match on weekend and within two seasons this league will become a big hit. In fact, it will be a revolutionary change in Pakistan Cricket.

My dear Pakistanis, please STOP this stupid discussion on bringing this news to front page or why this league should be/not called PPL? Doesn't matter if it isn't on front page, once launched everything will come on front! & names of league don't do anything! Let's just hope we have a safe, great & successful league that entertains everyone!

& I think 1 thing CRICKET in general is lacking, is an International League! I also get the point of limiting international players to give domestic ones a chance. But we need a World Premier League ( sort of)! In which every team picks whatever team they want, irrespective of which country the players belong! I mean no one asks Arsenal, Manchester Utd, Ac Milan, Real Madrid or Barcelona to put local players in their team! They pic the best they want! So IPL, BPL & this PPL r right to limit international players number but we need an International league! Like European football! & so we can have the best of the Best to play in one team & compete.

Sialkot asking PCB to help finding a place in CL is on cricinfo's front page, this news isn't... does someone form cricinfo fear from this league:) Either don't put it on your site or put it at right place.

  • 1_234 on April 4, 2012, 18:13 GMT

Good idea. But, change the name, not necessarily it should be Premier League (PL), it should be something unique.

  • on April 4, 2012, 18:00 GMT

PCB should not expect a healthy response from foreign players at once but they should stick to the idea of launching PPL, once they execute it successfully there might be an inflow of cricketers from abroad in the second version.

  • alikhan22 on April 4, 2012, 17:25 GMT

Cool news for me as Pakistani.....we can get more sponsors then other countries coz in Pakistan people are crazy about cricket..but please get some real pro people for management and who must know about the this tricky market and don't follow other people, get your own league name, like (Apna cricket league what ever..........best luck for my Nation

  • on April 4, 2012, 17:13 GMT

PCB... the least you can do is to not follow the PL's... change the name from PPL to something else... the Australians could called have their league APL but they didnt... and please no 'BASH'... its already been used by the Ausies... come up with something different and interesting... you might wanna involve the public and for suggestions... but no PPL PPLease...

  • DataQue on April 4, 2012, 16:45 GMT

brilliant work by PCB.. bring all famous & popular international players & PAKISTANi domestic players..plz spend a big money in its graphics, grounds, kits etc...PAKISTANi music at the ground.. & made it v.successful, but change the name PPL if possible & a new logo & title for our league..

  • Aura123 on April 4, 2012, 13:35 GMT

  • PakFan1209 on April 4, 2012, 13:32 GMT

It is a very nice idea for ppl, there are so many domestic matches played in Pakistan and nothing happens there, so why would anything happen in international matches, there are also some international cricketers in the domestic matches and terrorist dont attack them

  • on April 4, 2012, 12:36 GMT

IPL, BBL, BPL, CL, and South African domestic T20, its great i think that how the game of Cricket will grow,. if you see the soccer every country have league. and then international Matches very Few. only big Tournament, Like World Cup, i think ICC should do the same. only World Cup 50, T20 World Cup, and Test Championship. and Countries should start own leagues .... and International Tours and Matches should be decrease very few.....

  • voyager on April 4, 2012, 12:32 GMT

Better late then never. They should do it fast. Main objective should always be the promotion of the healthy activity and allow wider section(players, fans, sponsors, local businesses, equipment industry etc) to benefit from the great resource that pakistan have in the form of cricketing talent. Once we do this international team visits will become irrlelevant.

  • on April 4, 2012, 12:25 GMT

It is great idea to have PPL to bring back cricket in Pakistan. Pakistan is a safe enough country for playing cricket. 180 millions people are living in Pakistan and how one can say that Pakistan is unsafe country.

  • Syed_imran_abbas on April 4, 2012, 12:20 GMT

good.. go ahead.. pcb needs to find alternatives.. bring in some international players.. will be great step

  • ductur on April 4, 2012, 11:52 GMT

pakistan can organise ppl much much more successful than india. but we just need a competent team. ask billionaires in uae and other multinational companies in pak to invest. i am sure we can organise the league much more successfully.we have 3 grounds in uae and in also in pakistan. and i am sure if given good money these bollywood stars can will be more than happy to dance to in PPL.. :)

  • on April 4, 2012, 11:29 GMT

We Pakistanis are starving for cricket in the country, this will give us a good boost.

  • on April 4, 2012, 10:23 GMT

@ Meety - Funny how things unfolded. The Champions League ended up having only 3 Boards. It should be Funny how things unfolded. The Champions League ended up not having only 3 Boards. - Pakistan, Zimbawve & Srilanka.

  • Atifkhan3489 on April 4, 2012, 9:58 GMT

Ppl should be held in pak but it seems difficult as b.desh has not toured pak.if they would have come to pak then it was easy to do that.an other suggestion is that why pak does not ask s.lanka to come here and play a short series

  • on April 4, 2012, 9:45 GMT

Great news. I am sure that will lift Pakistan one day form as well.

  • on April 4, 2012, 9:32 GMT

It looks like the international cricket might be reduced in future as IPL, BPL, Big bash and other such events,. However the idea is good to make an effort to revive Pakistani cricket, this will promote our cricketers and they will have an opportunity to make millions of rupees, this will definitely leverage Pakistani cricket...

  • umairasgharbutt on April 4, 2012, 9:24 GMT

money will not be not a big matter here for launching ppl, we have many multinationals companies here and im sure the uae billionaires will also show keen interest to invest..

  • on April 4, 2012, 8:38 GMT

  • ejsiddiqui on April 4, 2012, 8:17 GMT

NO NO NO NO! Not another stupid T20 competition!

  • on April 4, 2012, 7:05 GMT

Great news. But I guess holding the tournament in Pakistan will restrict foregin players from participating. It could be held in Dubai or someplace new.But the fun of watching the local players play in the own cities infront of home crowds would be a lot better.Upto the PCB to decide..

  • bobmartin on April 4, 2012, 7:00 GMT

Oh No !!! Not another Mickey Mouse cricket infestation... The same batch of cricketers will be playing the same batch of cricketers in different locations all around the world... How soon before there will be no time for proper cricket... Heaven help the game...

  • CriticallyCricket on April 4, 2012, 6:50 GMT

Great News and this event MUST be played in Pakistan as the situation has improved immensely whilst the global media is bent on tarnishing Pak Image.

Thereafter, perhaps it can be rotated to UAE and other Associate countries.....

  • Perfect.Stranger on April 4, 2012, 6:36 GMT

Please don't name it Pakistan Premier League. Be creative and be innovative. PCB should hold a competition and announce a prize for best name and logo for the league. Also PCB should initiate a second champions league with other boards. After all it doesn't make sense for certain countries coming through qualifiers while some are guaranteed places and still some are totally excluded. Its also about time to either give all the domestic competitions a window in international calender (which would effectively mean no international cricket) or give no one a window. These policies of favoritism are damaging ICC and might result in a creation of another cricket governing council.

  • on April 4, 2012, 6:27 GMT

Interesting. I actually support the idea but on different grounds. I think the PCB should have a tournament like this but for local players only. You can invite players from neighbouring Afghanistan, Scotland, Ireland etc. I think this could be a good platform for associate members as well since I don't think Pakistan is ready to host high level international stars at the moment. Secondly this could promote a tournament that is based on cricket instead of bollywood actors who know as much about cricket as I know about open-heart surgery.

  • ammar_0300 on April 4, 2012, 6:24 GMT

    positive thinking for pcb

  • on April 4, 2012, 6:22 GMT

The idea is an excellent one. It will broadcast a positive gesture about the playing conditions in Pakistan. Such a shame that out of the all available test playing nations, only Pakistan is not playing in IPL. But PPL should be launched and must be launched early. The successful even of Domestic T20 is a major milestone with 35K people watching all the matches, daily.

  • on April 4, 2012, 6:21 GMT

Pakistan Cricket Board must work along with UAE cricket association and design a DUBAI PREMIER LEAGUE,this will boost the tourism in dubai and will also help young pakistani and emirates player to showcase the talent and they can also stage some matches in pakistan cities, which will be bring back the confidence of ICC and other teams. Maximum security must be provided to all foriegn players so as to safeguard the goodwill of cricket and pakistan in general and will also help some senior players to earn the money and fame involved in Indian premier league.
