Agarkar: Can't see reason for Aaron over Umesh

India Test squad for England

  • MS Dhoni (capt. & wk), M Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, Gautam Gambhir, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Ishwar Pandey, Ishant Sharma, Stuart Binny, Varun Aaron, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Pankaj Singh
  • In: Gautam Gambhir, Stuart Binny, Varun Aaron, Pankaj Singh
  • Out: Zaheer Khan, Umesh Yadav, Ambati Rayudu

Zaheer Khan has failed to find a place in an unusually large squad for the five Tests against England starting July. Other major talking points in the 18-man squad were the return of Gautam Gambhir, who last played Tests for India in December 2012, and the inclusion of Rajasthan's pace bowler Pankaj Singh. The touring party included the top seven that went to New Zealand, retained the two spinners, featured six quicks and one seaming allrounder, to go with Gambhir and reserve wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha.

What is the most surprising choice in India's Test squad for England?
See results »

The biggest talking point was the exclusion of Zaheer. A series of injury problems had raised questions over the 35-year-old Zaheer's ability to last a Test series and though he dispelled those worries by bowling 107 overs in the two Tests against New Zealand earlier this year, a back injury forced him to miss almost the entire India leg of the IPL. It is still unclear whether Zaheer has missed out due to the injury, or whether he has been dropped.

The last time India went to England, in 2011, Zaheer broke down in the second session of the first Test, never to recover. That was the beginning of India's dramatic slide in overseas Tests.

Gambhir, another casualty of that England tour, returned to the Test squad after a year and a half despite a middling first-class season as the squad is short on experience: only two other members in the squad, MS Dhoni and Ishant Sharma, have played Tests in England. There were no other outstanding contenders for the back-up openers' slot.

Pankaj has been rewarded for several successful seasons on the domestic circuit, including 39 wickets at 22.46 in the 2013-14 Ranji Trophy. He had also been integral to Rajasthan's run to successive Ranji titles in 2010-11 and 2011-12, and has made several impassioned pleas questioning his absence from the national squad. If Pankaj gets to play a Test, he will become the India bowler with most first-class wickets before Test debut, 300, beating R Vinay Kumar's 241.

The six quicks were joined by allrounder Stuart Binny. The only back-up batsman in the squad was Gambhir, with Saha on hand as second-choice wicketkeeper.

India have not played a five-Test series in more than a decade, the last was against West Indies in 2002. India have not won a Test abroad in three years, and have lost away series to South Africa and New Zealand in the past six months, causing them to slide to No. 5 in the ranking.

we as indians should support any team be it good or bad many are criticising because their favourite player may not be there to be honest if the selectors select a team of fans choice then it may loose badly who knows. so keep calm and pour down your comments once the series is over. now all we need to do is to show our full support to the team rather than criticising it.

#landl47 - agree with you. PK could lead the attack.

Finally five test series to look forward too. Its been a long time coming and heres hoping we see a lot more of them.

That being said - India clearly start out as Underdogs and will need to play a lot better on than their last foray. I'm worried about the opening partner for Murali Vijay - who i think will make a good fist of it - but Dhawan and Gambhir whoever they pick have got to tighten up in English conditions. Pujara and Kohli are key to India's chances and along with Rahane they will hope to get a decent start from the opners by way of taking the shine off the ball to set up above par scores on the board.

The bowling is a worry as always - Amit Mishra and Prabeen Kumar should have been in there - can't see Stuart Binny playing in the test team yet. Mishra and Praveen are both wicket takers and thats what we desperately need, bowlers who can force the issue. Umesh is a surprise exclusion - hopefully Varun Aaron can justify his inclusion.

Let the battle begin.

I'm afraid Pankaj Singh has been picked 300 wickets too late. Looks like the Selectors missed the boat(again) over here.

Posted by coldcoffee123 on (May 30, 2014, 15:55 GMT)

I am sure Dhoni and selectors have realized that by picking out-of-date Gambhir over Sehwag, they have blown away India's chances of even earning a draw in England. Sehwag may not have scored big in IPL, but boy! he is smacking the ball right out of the middle of the bat. Again and again. Every single ball.

Posted by rock_kamran on (May 30, 2014, 6:08 GMT)

Did anyone noticed that there are all right-arm seamers? This is stupid selection seeing the fact that there are more left-handers in the English team. Even Irfan phatan would have been a better selection with red ball in swinging conditions and why they have dropped the best pacer of India (Zaheer)? If he would have not lasted that longer, He would be a great bowling mentor for the young quicks.

Posted by CricLover316 on (May 30, 2014, 6:03 GMT)

Pankaj Singh will get no place in playing 11 and Binny... Sigh! Yeah, he is in the team to "Get the balance" right. "Team Player", "A seasoned Campaigner" these words are used for him, when he is just an average player,Rishi Dhawan is better than him. No point in selecting a medium pacer who can "bat a bit". Yadav and Mishra can count themselves unlucky. Ishant will go on to play all the tests as long as Dhoni is the Captain. Can you imagine dernbach playing 50 tests? Its a damn shame & an insult to all those great players who haven't played even half of 'em in their careers. And Yadav,Mishra have been sacrificed for Ishant,Ashwin and Binny. What is the criterion to get into the Indian team ?If I were a young Indian bowler aspiring for the Indian team,I would be discouraged because of the captain's repetitive selections irrespective of the team's performances and his stubbornness not to make any changes in the team even after dismal performances of the bowlers. Ind fans are disappointed.

Posted by CricLover316 on (May 30, 2014, 5:50 GMT)

@Vikrajendran -Dhoni is rightfully criticized for his selections and his stubbornness to stick with his favorites Ash,Ish & an unfit Zak. Its not as if India doesnt have good bowlers,it does.BUT, Dhoni never looks beyond Ishant,Zak and Ashwin. Why was Yadav,India's fastest bowler, who performed brilliantly in England in CT dropped ?Why he did not go with a Leg Spinner instead of Ashwin, who averages 250+ in the tours of SA and NZ and Ashwin was dropped in the last 3 tests India played overseas. So,whats the point of picking him for 5 Tests in England ? Mishra, has grabbed his chances with both hands everytime he played for India.Dhoni never drops Ishant even when he has the worst average in the history of the game for a front line bowler, has no less pace than bhuvi,no movement and has been bowling the same short of a length length since 6 Years.Dhoni, after winning,"No change in a winning combo." Dhoni after losing,"We need to back our players" Back them so much that they get complacent.

Posted by   on (May 30, 2014, 5:12 GMT)

Again Ishant Sharma and Murali Vijay?? That means Rahane and Gambhir will not play. Stuart Binny will handle the towel and drinks. Irfan Pathan should have been given another chance to prove in Tests. They should have picked some batsmen who had performed in domestic like Kedar Jhadav instead of Murali Vijay.

Posted by CricLover316 on (May 30, 2014, 4:47 GMT)

@Vikrajendran- I would pick Jadeja and Misha anyday over Ashwin. Jadeja picked up for a 6 for in the only Innings he bowled in a test match in SA. Dhoni picks the same team everytime irrelevant of their performances. India has a pool of talent. When they will be tried ? After losing so many matches overseas,Dhoni should have been a little more serious in his selections & trying to win a game. Its always upto Virat,Pujara and Rahane and to some extent Vijay to play solid knocks and get good scores for India to "have a chance" at winning. How effective Mishra would've been in NZ,SA as compared to Ashwin ?Dhoni should atleast drop some players to make them the worth of their places ? Why is always the batsmen that get the blame for the losses ? They are the ones that have saved some grace for India. Everytime they have to score huge totals and chase big targets and they have done well, when its the bowlers who are not performing and its because same lot of bowlers are picked by Dhoni

Posted by landl47 on (May 30, 2014, 3:03 GMT)

The real surprise to me is the omission of Praveen Kumar. When India were being thrashed in 2011, he was the only bowler who was able to trouble England. He seems to be fit, so why leave him out when India has so few bowlers with experience in England?

Posted by   on (May 29, 2014, 22:50 GMT)

england will win this test series.

Posted by Vikrajendran on (May 29, 2014, 21:13 GMT)

To all the Dhoni critics out there, it is fair that his captaincy is pretty negative and his record in away from home is abysmal. However it is far easier to captain the South African or Australian seam attack when you can go on the attack in tests. I mean Mitch Johnson steaming in at 150ks is a little bit more threatening than Ishant Sharma struggling to hit 130ks. That's why his captaincy is so negative as he has no faith in his bowling.

Posted by sussexsunrisers on (May 29, 2014, 21:10 GMT)

As an England fan I'm feeling very hopeful. You can see why the selectors have picked Binny to allow for the possibility of two frontline spinners but in reality only a couple a English tracks such as the Oval and Old Trafford actually swing. Even though Varun Aaron is brutally unpopular with almost all Indian fans by virtue of being the only Indian bowler in the squad who bowls 140+ regularly, Shami perhaps as well on a good day and so has to be picked. The headache for the selectors will be the number 6 position and whether it should be filled by a batsman or all rounder. Either jadeja plays as a spinning all rounder and ashwin at 8 or rohit sharma plays as a batsman and bowls a bit. Bhuvi has to play just for the fact that he can swing the ball enough to trouble the English batsmen. Unfortunately for India, I don't see ashwin or jadeja posing too much of a threat to a relatively spin assured England line up. As a left field choice, yuvraj Singh could have been picked for the 6 role

Posted by Cricketfan11111 on (May 29, 2014, 19:18 GMT)

Jadeja's batting has improved a lot recently and he will take the all rounder's spot. So Binny will be warming the bench. India XI: Vijay, Dhawan, Pujara, Kohli, Rohit, Dhoni, Jadeja, Ashwin/Rahane, Bhuvi, Ishant, Shami/Pandey.

Posted by ultimatewarrior on (May 29, 2014, 19:11 GMT)

If your captain is MSD then why you need even 12 member squad (let alone the 18) because whatever the result best XI from test 1 to 5 will be carried on...everybody else is complaining about exclusion of umesh & inclusion of s binny...but mostly the rishi dhawan, a much better player in first class and only player from today's generation who can be close to Kapil's mould...

Posted by wapuser on (May 29, 2014, 17:58 GMT)

Zaheer khan....oh my God!!!! What a waste of talent this guy has been..He has let himself and his country down.....look at him....holding his shoulder in d middle of a spell n going out....never to come back again...he has done it again n again....many times for team India as well..well done..

Posted by android_user on (May 29, 2014, 16:27 GMT)

Good selection baring 2. Binny is neither test standard bowler nor batsman. I am sure that he will definitely not going to make in finalxi in any match. They might have picked a specialist middle order batsman a head of him. Umesh is surprisingly left out. He might have been a best pick a head of aron, who doesn't looks like test cricket material

Posted by ravimenon on (May 29, 2014, 16:16 GMT)

I really don't understand the logic of selection. "Stuart Binny" - He can be selected at the maximum in ODI side, with his present form he will not find a place in his state ranji side. Ashwin & Jadeja - Two overseas liabilities included. We can understand if we are playing in India. Instead of Ashwin, I would have preferred "Bajji" or one of the so many leg spinners we have at present or even "Ojha". Instead of Binny- Raydu or Manish Pandey should have included. Instead of Ghambir,Karun Nair who is in great touch and more correct technique should have preferred.

Posted by Kashi0127 on (May 29, 2014, 15:33 GMT)

@Humdingers Agree with you. Dhoni is playing havoc with India team. Terrible selection.

Several players who should have been definitely IN : Uthappa, Sanju Samson

Several players who could have been considered: Umesh Yadav, Karun Nair, Manish Pandey, Sandeep Sharma

Several players who probably should have NOT been included : Stuart Binny, Saha,VArun Aron, Rohit Sharma

Posted by   on (May 29, 2014, 15:19 GMT)

Dhoni as the test captain and batsman is still baffling to me. He seems to get picked due to his rep on ODIs. India needs to start grooming keepers for the future. If I had to pick starting XI, Saha would get a chance to show his keeping & batting in all the matches. Dhoni could play as Batsman (Like Sanga did for SL when they started grooming Chandimal)

Posted by mshyder on (May 29, 2014, 15:07 GMT)

Such a large squad with 6 pacers and 1 backup batsman shows the selector's lack of confidence on the pacers. Exclusion of Yadav is astonishing as the tour is in the 2nd half of the summer when the ball swings less and a genuine fast bowler could be more useful than the military medium/seamers in the squad. Selection of Gambhir on basis of IPL for tests doesnot make sense neither does the inclusion of Binny who has nothing to back his selection. Despite their recent problems on paper England seems far superior than India in their home turf.

Posted by   on (May 29, 2014, 14:57 GMT)

Can anybody explain on inclusion of stuat binny?Umesh Yadhav shoud have been in his place. Remember he did a nice job in CT'13.Whats the need of keeping a half batsman at a time when top batsmen are tested.

Posted by SANATP22 on (May 29, 2014, 14:54 GMT)

Umesh yadav, Harbhajan Singh must selected to test squad , no need of Binny, R jadeja in test Squad, Player like KL Rahul and P Ojha need to give chance. May be there is another white wash waiting for Team india.

Posted by Speng on (May 29, 2014, 14:47 GMT)

I guess the Indian selectors have soured on Umesh Yadav? They've been picking him on squads but not playing him for the last few tours so maybe there's something about him they don't like but his raw pace is useful and they have enough bowling depth to rotate fast bowlers. i think they should have brought another proper spinner and it should be a leggie. India don't need an allrounder i.e. Jadeja or Binny as Ashwin bats really well and I don't rate Jadeja as a test bowler relative to the other spinners they could have taken. I would pick either 3 pacers and two spinners or 4 pacers and a spinner. I reckon at least two of the pitches will take spin well (if the last two summers are any indication) and England's batsmen will not like the turning ball.

Posted by MiddleStump on (May 29, 2014, 14:35 GMT)

Gambhir is a sitting duck against the moving ball and will probably not play any test. Dhawan is a little better. Only Shami and Aaron can reach speeds of even 140K. Pandey, Pankaj, Binny, Saha will make a strong drinks team. Ashwin will be Ashwin once he reaches overseas. Not difficult to predict a 5-0 white wash unless the weather gods have mercy on India.

Posted by AjitDJ on (May 29, 2014, 14:13 GMT)

I won't be surprised if Ishant Sharma consistently finds a place in the Playing XI on the basis of his "experience".But the only experience he has is in getting hammered and giving entertainment to spectators!

Posted by eng_mdkhan on (May 29, 2014, 11:00 GMT)

You can pick all you want but India's achilles heel in Tests has more to do with the captaincy than the players themselves. Dhoni is not fit for Test captaincy and I do not know how long BCCI intends to persist with him despite his dismal record. Forget about home series even an A-side captain can claim dominance at home. However the overseas tour are the ones that matter. In any case I have never seen Dhoni interested leading India in Tests, his post match conferences are vague and it seems he is least bothered. Gambhir I feel has the experience, initiative and likes to dominate the opposition like Ganguly which is required in a Test Captain. Dhoni can play as a WK/Batsman but I sincerely feel he should be replaced for India to better its record in Tests particularly overseas record.

Posted by Vikrajendran on (May 29, 2014, 10:56 GMT)

this should be the playing XI for the first test:

Vijay, Dhawan, Pujara, Kohli, Rahane, Sharma, Dhoni, Jadeja, Kumar, Shami, Aaron

If one of the openers is a flop for the first few tests bring in Gambhir. Aaron should be given a chance in bowler friendly conditions. has only really played for India on flat tracks in the subcontinent, genuine pace will be useful. Jadeja will get be a tidy 4th bowler in England and will hold up one end effectively

Posted by nani_cool21 on (May 29, 2014, 10:36 GMT)

Shocked to see praveen kumar not selected for england tour.Such genuine swin bowler did very well in last england tour and always better bowler than ishanth

Posted by latecut_04 on (May 29, 2014, 10:11 GMT)

@Arjit.Verma areyou talking about our last tour to England. Well in that case both bowlers and batsmen let us down.In SA and NZ a few months ago batsmen performed creditably. It was our bowlers who snatched draw from the jaws of victory(against SA and NZ).In the second test against SA Steyn's genius won them the game.No shame in that.Good move to overlook Zaheer.Giving fitness topmost priority is key to professionalism. But a poor poor move to drop Umesh Yadav.A magnificent prospect in the form of his life and bowls at a lively pace. Will the likes of I Pandey and Pankaj sigh get a game. No issues with Aaron's selection but Umesh should have been in the team. Also why the hell is Aswin there.Should have been Misra.Aswin is no spinner and cant do well outside India.bolwers will again hand over series victory to England.thats it.only looking for some sterling batting display from Pujara,Kohli, rahane and Vijay..Sigh!!!

Posted by Mayank_Saxena1286 on (May 29, 2014, 9:53 GMT)

@Reverse_Bat, Bhuvneshwar Kumar is in the team, I think Irfan pathan & praveen kumar should be selected in the team in place of Pankaj singh & Ishant sharma because Irfan & Praveen both are the good swing bowlers and conditions in england is good for swing bowling.

Posted by rsurya on (May 29, 2014, 9:44 GMT)

Why the whole world is against Praveen Kumar? I am sure he will get a regular place in all the national teams except India. So pity that he born in India. B.Kumar and P.Kumar bowling at both ends will extract early wickets in every match.

Posted by kiwi_boyz on (May 29, 2014, 9:27 GMT)

Pankaj Singh ...rejected by the IPL franchises and goes UNSOLD...but the BCCI still recognize his Ranji efforts...surprising how Utthappa still remains out of the test squad ...and the wayward Varun Aaron ... better would have been Sandeep Sharma with his seam and swing...Binny in a test squad ??? Really looking at another 5-0 whitewash if not for 1-2 draws due to the fickle English weather

it is actually a joke that Ishant Sharma is still playing test cricket. A bowling average of nearly 38 are you serious. its no coincidence that in the last 12 away test matches he's played we've lost 11 of them. its time to move on like the batting has done. play Kumar, Shami, Aaron there's pace and swing there. clearly as shown by the ashes well directed pace works. the batting should stay the same as it was in New Zealand, the ability is there just discipline is lacking in some players.

pace bowler who bowl 140 kph must be given chance tested in condition favour for past bowler they may include umesh yadav ,world cup aus and nz best we want to ready pace bowler we want to test three umaesh , varun , shami, best two must join with buhvi in world cup ,ishant good bowler but not good on slog overs.

my best XI Dhawan ,gambir,kohli,pujara.rohit,dhoni,ashwin,jadeja,bhuvi,shami,varun

Why have been Ojha and Mishra omitted? 6 pacemen plus Stuart Binny and only One(and a half) spinners in the squad is a real shocker. The days of green tops are long over in England(BskyB and the atrociously expensive Test match ticket rates have taken care of that). What is left are dead batting beauties(Leeds is an exception). So where is the need for 6 pacemen. Looks like the IPL is having an undue influence on Test team selection. Still, the selectors should be congratulated for bringing back Gambir(easily India's best reserve opener), Wriddhiman Saha(after MSD the best by a countrymile), Pankaj Singh(a real talent and a workhorse, picked perhaps 2 years too late) and Ishwar Pandey.

@Arjit.Verma- Do check the record of Kohli,Pujara,Rahane and Vijay. Thats 4 of our top 6 have done very well. And then Check Ishant sharma Test career, the worst Average in the history of the game for a front line bowler. Check Ashwin Overseas Average in SA and NZ. Its close to Lara's highest score. Ask why Mishra isnt picked for India regularly, when he bagged every chance he was given at International Level with both hands. Thats because of our Captain doesnt like any changes, irrespective of what the team does. The batsmen have been carrying the load for India, specially Kohli and he's just 25. Give the batsmen something under 400+ to chase. Its Ridiculous to blame the batsmen considering their overseas experience. The problem is Dhoni never looks beyond Ish,Ashwin,Zak. Bhuvi bowls faster than Ish and gets more swing. Ishant is worse than Dernbach and what does Dhoni see in him and ashwin? My God! 50 Tests. Its criminal. Reason why India lose- Dhoni stubborn selections. Not the batsmen

Posted by   on (May 29, 2014, 7:22 GMT)

Gambhir outside sub continent has an even better record than in sub continent,In 14 test matches he has played outside sub continent , he has scored 2 100s and 6 50s with over 1000 runs at an average of 42. Remember he made India win a test series in New Zealand against Tim Southee and played Dale Steyn and Morne Morkle very well in South Africa . He was unlucky in England as he got a couple of injuries and that is the reason for him not performing there last time.

It is wrong to classify Ashwin as being suitable to bowl on Indian wickets. Further,Ashwin can bat as well as Jadeja in test matches,as his records will testify . In any case, both Ashwin and Jadeja should be played in tests . The composition for England tests should be 5 batsmen, wicket keeper,2 spinners and 3 pace bowlers. since Dhoni is a batsman,Ashwin and Jadeja will doble up as allrounders to complete a balanced team . My team for the first test will be Shikar Dhawan,Murali Vijay,Pujara,Kohli,Dhoni,Jadeja,Ashwin,Bhuvanesh,Shami and Ishant/Pandey .

Guess Indian test squad is in dire straits if they think gambhir is the answer!!!What has he got to show other than a few lucky knocks for KKR(REMEMBER THE 0001 AT THE START OF THE LEAGUE)??he had an aweful domestic season and according to this article he brings in "EXPERIENCE"!!! Hope the indian selectors are closely monitoring the England-Srilanka series where teams are getting bundled out for two digits. IPL IS GOOD ENTERTAINMENT BUT DEFINITELY NOT A SELECTION PREREQUISITE FOR OUT OF CONTENTION CRICKETERS TO MAKE A COMEBACK!!

Posted by   on (May 29, 2014, 6:42 GMT)

Doni is the biggest threat to England with the bat. Gambhir? He's had his day and his temperament is wrong to succeed in England. Where's Baji? Baji Singh is back to his spinning best.

Posted by DaisonGarvasis on (May 29, 2014, 6:32 GMT)

So they are taking Jadeja and Ashwin to England! Are they both going to be in the playing 11? I mean, three seamers and two spinners? In England? Is Binny going to be picked ahead of Jadeja as the all rounder as Binny would swing the ball? Is Binny a batting all rounder or a bowling all rounder? Or neither (just all rounder?). Is there no better seam bowling all rounder than Binny in India to be picked to play Test Cricket? As cricket fans surrendering Home test series against England is a wound still open. Winning the series in England would heal that wound pretty well. These bizarre selections does not look promising. I would be glad to be proved wrong and over the moon to see Binny (or Jadeja) take wickets and score runs to help India win the series. On the scale of probability, the ranks pretty low though.

@ pmg08:This is test team and I think you have not watched the matches in SA and NZ where Murali Vijay and Jadeja have done well.

Posted by sonurijs on (May 29, 2014, 6:24 GMT)

Jadeja should be in playing XI rather than Ashwin as Jaddu will be effective in England pitches. Binny should not be given chance to play. Saha can play in case of Dhoni's injury, otherwise should not be tested.

My fav playing XI :

Dhawan, Gambir, Pujara, Kohli, Vijay, Dhoni, Jadeja,Varun, Bhuvaneshwar, Ishant, Shami

No matter which team india selects. They will clean sweep england like last time. Bring back tendulkar, ganguly to win.

This guy deserves a chance. Back in 2012, there was a huge discussion regarding pankaj being left out of the 'A' squad. You can have a look at the following link.

Posted by pmg08 on (May 29, 2014, 6:11 GMT)

Why we need to have Ranji trophy when selectors won't consider the performances of players in domestic? Uthappa, Jadhav, rishi dhawan who had performed well are not selected. Vijay was a big flop in domestic season so as aaron.

Posted by venkatesh018 on (May 29, 2014, 6:07 GMT)

It is farewell time for Zaheer, I am afraid. But Alistair Cook definitely won't mind ! Now he has to only see off Shami's first spell and he will be away, making hundred after hundred.

Posted by pmg08 on (May 29, 2014, 6:07 GMT)

Everyone are talking about Binny. Why no one pointing out at Murali Vijay, Ashwin, Jadeja, Ishant and Aaron? Binny haven't got a chance to play in NZ series were he bowled only one over. He is their as a backup allrounder who can swing the ball in England conditions. Uthappa whould have been better opener than vijay since he had good domestic season and as well as IPL for backup.

How many chances you need to give for vijay, ashwin, jadeja and ishant? They could have opted for zaheer, mishra and ojha instead of them. Poor selecion and as usual Dhoni's favourites in the team.

Posted by venkatesh018 on (May 29, 2014, 6:05 GMT)

Pankaj Singh....Absolutely deserved selection, perhaps two years too late. Hope he plays a couple of Tests.

Posted by cvenka on (May 29, 2014, 5:45 GMT)

@Hunnybhayana, i agree with u with a small correction... yes viru should be there- pl see my comments abt my team. he must be there based on his experience and batsmenship. where i disagree with u is when u say he must be given a chance as he is in his last stage. cricket is a passion sport where winning matters and there should not be any sentiments...

Posted by   on (May 29, 2014, 5:40 GMT)

Points :

1. Stu binny should have been replaced by Rishi Dhawan who was the most consistent all rounder in Ranji last year. 2. pankaj deserves a place for his overall consistency. 3.Aaron is a bit of surprise would have preferred umesh 4. zaheer's shelf life is over and we need to move on. 5. gambhir lucky, kedar deserves a place for his consistent domestic season 6. Uthapa a natural choice for his performances through out the year.

Posted by Ramesh_Joseph on (May 29, 2014, 5:31 GMT)

In my 30 years of following Indian Cricket, Stuart Binny is the most shocking selection. And the non-selection of Umesh Yadav. OMG!! Umesh is easily the best Indian Test fast bowler.

Posted by   on (May 29, 2014, 5:22 GMT)

Is Nayar's stats honestly not good enough to make the team ahead of Binny?

FC stats: 4301 runs @ 51, 113 wickets @ 32

What about Rishi Dhawan?

FC stats: 1539 @ 41, 145 wickets @ 24

Few people here explaining about uthappa and yadav..on current form not only IPL but also considering domestic performance robin uthappa should be in playing xi..because he can open innings and play positively, bowl, keep and form of his life ..gambhir is nowhere at his best..bowling wise yadav should be there just remember what he did in Australia..if people can remember ishants single over in 2008 then why not five wicket hauls of yadav..he is good with both old and new ball..he can reverse..and varun Aaron haters need to remember how broad and swann played medium pace when it doesn't swing..varuns job is to create fear in Batman's mind..ishwar pandey, binny useless selections..India needed players comfortable on both backfoot and front foot like uthappa, kohli, pujara, rohit ,rahane....dhon is only good with backfoot stuggle on front foot..dhawan,vijay,gambhir are only good on frntfoot..4-0 for england if not 5-0

Posted by   on (May 29, 2014, 5:05 GMT)

Tambe or Praveen could have been better bet than Binny for England tests..

Posted by cvenka on (May 29, 2014, 5:01 GMT)

STUNNING SELECTION..... If i were the selector having the wish to win in england the squad selected by me would be like this. but it is india and it is bcci where u cannot expect silly things like that....

Top order- dhawan, shewag, pujara middle order- kohli, rahane, rohit, rayudu wicket keeper- Dhoni, uthappa All rounders- Irfan pathan, jadeja Spinner- Amit mishra Pacers- bhuvi, shami, umesh, praveenkumar

Posted by   on (May 29, 2014, 4:54 GMT)

lot of discussion about the team selection going on...but no one picking the viru as a reserve opener..he is the most experienced player in indian last stage of his career, atleast he deserve to be among with the indian test can you forgot about his classical innings..which maybe no one can ever play..nawab of najabgarh..any viru fan

Posted by   on (May 29, 2014, 4:54 GMT)

Stuart Binny dooesn't deserve a place. Rishi Dhawan was a bette choice. Also Umesh Yadav should have been included instead of Pandey. AMit Mishra who bowled well throughout this season missed out. Saha's choice is fine. Sanju Samson needs more time to blossom into a test player. Pankaj singh's inclusion is justified. He bowled well this season and last season. Overall the team selection is ok, except for the inclusion of Stuart Binny, who I feel is not the right person to be selected for the long tour, and he is not even young. So , the criterion behind his selection????????.......

Posted by rajuramki on (May 29, 2014, 4:51 GMT)

The selection of Binny and the exclusion of Zaheer are shocking . While Binny is good enough for Ranji only , Zaheer will be a much better bowler in English conditions. There are not many back up batsmen which is surprising . In any case, Ido not foresee any new faces being included in the playing XI .

Posted by naren1983 on (May 29, 2014, 4:45 GMT)

Considering the 5 Test Matches, bowlers need to be very fit and form. So Zaheer is never to be considered, but bringing Aaron is poor as he is not proved anything in domestic or in IPL, rather Umesh Yadav doing very well with fit & form, he should be default choice to support Shami & Ishant. Giving chance to Pankaj is good. In batsmen, Kedhar Jadav should have been in as he finished the top run scorer in last Ranji Season for backup as middle order. Should have brought Uthappa in place of Saha as reserved Wicket keeper. Pankaj will be given chance to replace someone after two tests, while Gambhir will replace Shikhar or Vijay later. We should go with Ashwin than Jadeja, hope he will improve this time. Otherwise, someone will be given chance for next overseas series for sure. It should have been this 16 member: XI: Shikhar, Vijay, Pujara, Kohli, Rohit, Rahane, Dhoni, Ashwin, Bhuvi, Shami, Ishant, Umesh, Pankaj, Jadeja, Kedar Jadav, Uthappa.

Posted by   on (May 29, 2014, 4:44 GMT)

Only God knows why Vijay ,Ishant and Varun was picked..Poor decision to leave out a leg spinner as Englishmen struggle against spin...Picking six Quicks seems stupid bhuvi and shami are certain for all the games..Binny was never an option in ODI's..and a test callup looks baffling and jadhav would been a good pick instead..Gauti's experience wil b very useful and a player like him deserves a second chance...

Posted by Bat-an-Bowl on (May 29, 2014, 4:39 GMT)

Again It's how easy does the selectors forget the ranji and deodhar trophy winners there is no reward for their achievement not one quality player from Karnataka made it to the squad with the exception of binny who's out of form

Posted by Hareendra on (May 29, 2014, 4:37 GMT)

18 man squad seems too excessive to me. Still no place for Ojha is a mystery. Does that mean Ashiwn will play in all games as the lone spinner? Although Gambir is good, would have liked to see a young batsman given the chance as the reserve batter.

It will be a tough series with the thin bowling attack. more onus will be on the batsmen. Without the likes of Dravid, Laxman, and Sachin, it will be very tough

Posted by   on (May 29, 2014, 4:31 GMT)

Everyone speaks why not Uthappa? Why not Umesh?. We not consider player only on the basis of their performance in IPL as well as in present performance. We also think about their past performances also. Ishant bowled well in Australia Series in Australia. Ashwin & Jadeja bowled well in champions trophy in England. If new players were not given the chance we blame the selection committee & captain. If they given chance for new people also we people criticize them. With the given team how we going to perform is so important. Everyone had their own talent & everyone wants to prove themselves. Only 11 members game is cricket not everyone gets chance every time. So lets hope for our team to win in overseas…..

Posted by Diehard4India on (May 29, 2014, 4:20 GMT)

pankaj singh's selection is good move, he has the ability to swing the bowl both ways, he deserved this chance, has been performing since ranji season 2010, and somehow he is any day better than ishant sharma. india needs to stick to the basics if they want to have a successful tour in england, england is not invincible but in their own backyard they are a force to reckon with, fight fire with fire, i have feeling that our batsman would perform better, only issue is that why amit mishra a leggie has been kept out of the team, yet again giving a chance to overseas-non-performer-outstandingly-helpless R Ashwin.

Posted by   on (May 29, 2014, 3:57 GMT)

The composition could have been as follows. 1. Umesh Yadav instead of Pandey. 2. A genuine spinner like Ojha or Mishra instead of R Ashwin. 3. Sanju Samson should have got a look in for the future.

Ishant is n one's favourite, but I guess he did enough on the NZ Tour and without him the line up will be bereft of any experience

Posted by   on (May 29, 2014, 3:29 GMT)

There is no Point in Taking Gambhir in the Squad for the Test Series.he is not even fit to play even a Domestic Series.Poor Selection in terms of Pace Attack.Varu is not at his best at all.Umesh is in his peak and bowling at a Good pace in IPL.Ishant is just a Waste Person in the Team he is not fit to be there.Until Dhoni is not changed as Test Captian India will never win a Overseas Test Series. He just takes the players who listen and obey him.even in this Series i dont think that Ishwar will get a chance to play even a single test match. Why not Robin he has proved his worth in this year IPL and Scoring loads of Runs.He is in Prime Form now and this is the time to give him a chance in the Test team and get the best out of Him.Cant forget his contributions in 2007 T20 World Cup.Two people cant win Test matches for India in Overseas. Why Ashwin again everyone Knows that he has forgotten his basics bowling Skills.any given day a Leg Spinner would be more Effective than Ashwin in the Squad

Posted by entryholedia on (May 29, 2014, 3:24 GMT)

The famed bowling attack of India : Offspinner who never takes wickets overseas and does more changes in his action every delivery ---Mr R Ashwin( Courtesy CSK)- Dear Mr Ashwin at least come close to Shivlal Yadav who took wickets overseas and gave us victories!

Seam atack - Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami- Only good bowlers who will play all tests - But mind you the wickets on which they will thrive the attack of anderson , Broad et al will do 100% more and so its up to our batsmen

3rd Seamer - Ishwar Pandey, Ishant Sharma, Varun Aaron, Pankaj Singh???????? - probably Ishant sharma who according to Andy Roberts used to bowl fast but now bowls spin .Ishwar pandey being from CSK may get in instead

Varun Aaron- will never get a look in

Stuart Binny- where thou will fit in? Maybe the practice matches .

Pankaj Singh - Sorry cannot say .Maybe the practice matches .

result : The 1959 tour to England looms large !!

Posted by goldenpower on (May 29, 2014, 3:16 GMT)

Rishi dhawan non selection ridiculous. In IPL matches never find out a best test player.

Posted by   on (May 29, 2014, 3:03 GMT)

I like the fact that Gambhir is picked for the tour. It is unlikely that Vijay and Dhawan can give us good starts in all 5 matches. I see Gambhir playing at least two, if not more, matches on this tour. I also like that Varun Aaron and Pankaj Singh are there. People have not seen Pankaj but being consistently among the wickets in Ranji Trophy is no mean feat for a pacer. Give the guy some credit and don't judge people purely on the basis of their IPL performance. Only selection which perplexed me was Stuart Binny. I don't think he has the technique or temperament as a batsmen in English conditions. He may nto get a place in the side as a bowler too. A better option could have been a quality spinner like Mishra, because we will surely get one or two dry pitches where having a quality spinner would be great. All in all it is a good side and it will depend on our batsmen to put up winning scores on the board.

Posted by Siva_Bala75 on (May 29, 2014, 2:39 GMT)

Why Binny? There is no point in having more of the same: Ishant, Aaron, Pankaj Singh, Md Shami, Pandey...all the same with only Bhuvi being different. Thats why the selectors have opted for Binny who can swing a bit in the English conditions, bat reasonably well. Now Dhoni has an option to go for 3 pacers (Ishant, Md Shami and Bhuvi) + Binny + either Jadeja or Ashwin. If the pitch is dry/ spins, he will go for both Jadeja and Ashwin and drop Binny. Given this + 6 batsmen (incl Dhoni) gives Dhoni what he always wants- some extra cushion in batting.

Posted by Humdingers on (May 29, 2014, 1:58 GMT)

What has done Gambhir done? Why Ishant? Ojha should be there in place of Ashwin (he is unfit can't field and inept in unhelpful conditions). Why not throw a Sanju Sampson in there for the experience of being on tour - Saha is not going to get a game anyway! Or a Naman Ojha or even a Karun. Ah Dhoni-Fletcher…only when they are gone will we see a rise in the rankings and some overseas wins.

Why uthappa not picked. He is the best batsman in IPL. He have good technics to play in swinging conditions.

Who is the vice captain? I think it is time we started mentioning in cricinfo or any other sports paper, who the vice captain is? There is always a chance of an injury to any captain in the world and we need to know who is backing him up ???

Posted by kohli_is_future on (May 29, 2014, 1:44 GMT)

irk why nobody is talking about bhuvi's exclusion for England selectors really think that current crap of Indian bowlers bowl better than bhuvi, only God helps them.if we once check the previous England tour bowling charts, praveen is the only bowler who picked up some wickets.bhuvi is in the mould of praveen with even greater control over his swing n line n length.

Posted by kohli_is_future on (May 29, 2014, 1:39 GMT)

biggest surprise of this team selection is exclusion of bhuvaneswar kumar.what he has to do to deserve a call.I mean he swinging the ball both ways like a spinner in unhelpful Indian conditions .in England we need him badly where he can be lethal. he has tremendous control over his swing .without him we could not able to pick 20english wickets

Posted by android_user on (May 29, 2014, 1:26 GMT)

why the always go for Stuart Bunny every time....he is neither a good bowler nor a seen in this years IPL he is all lost there..if they want an allrounder IRFAN is always better

another 5-0 whitewash for india with this selection. No quality leg spinner is a massive hit for india and CricLover 316 has summed it up. When India wins, Dhoni"Same Team. No change in a Winning Combination" When India loses,"We need to back our players. Our bowlers did not bowl well. Its important to back them." Back them so much that they take it for granted? Ok

Posted by brusselslion on (May 29, 2014, 0:27 GMT)

Boy, judging by the reaction most of you Indian fans don't have a half empty glass, but one that's got a bloody great hole in the bottom! Having said that, I must confess that I'm a little surprised by the selection. The bowling doesn't look very penetrating on paper and it's difficult to see where 20 wickets are coming from. I'm surprised that Ohja & Khan didn't make the cut as both have bowled well in England before.

Still, look on the bright side. It's not as though we (England) are blessed with an abundance of world class players at the moment.

Posted by RightArmSuperFast on (May 28, 2014, 23:02 GMT)

What is the most surprising choice in India's Test squad for England? Answer: Ishant Sharma's inclusion.

Posted by desiboy454 on (May 28, 2014, 22:57 GMT)

This is an interesting squad of bowlers.. No experience in England. Zak could have helped on the bench to people like Bhuvi and Shami. I know Ishant took a 6-for each in SA/NZ. But he was very very average. Add Shami being average in all forms since his test debut and no real spin threat, and you have a very weak bowling line up. Umesh yadav being dropped for aaron is aweful, Aaron in ODI is fine, but in TESTS? Umesh is better for sure, he is expensive but a wicket taker. GG will add some good stability to the batting. And what the heck is BINNY doing in this squad? really... Binny doesnt even deserve a spot in T20, let alone test. guess he has some backing. For atleast 2 tests, Vijay and Dhawan will open. My xi: 1. Vijay 2. Dhawan 3. Pujara 4. Kohli 5. Rahane 6. GG (will bring stability) 7. MSD 8. Ashwin 9. Bhuvi 10. Shami 11. Ishant/Ishwar/ Pankaj Singh

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 22:49 GMT)

As a Pakistani fan, I am amazed to see Umesh Yadav exclusion from the team. Varun aaron, Ishwar Panday and Ishant Sharma over Umesh Yadav? Seriously :/.. The guy can seam and swing the ball at 140+ and definitely would be missed in English conditions.. Though England is very weak right now therefore India might win the series, but i got to say that the best balling line up is not chosen by the selectors.

Amit Mishra misses all the series but when India is nearing a worldcup or mega event, they fill him up in the squad. Mishra should be a consistent member of the team as he can wrap the batting line up in a spell on his day..!!

Good luck Dhoni.. but i don't see your bowlers winning the match for you except for Bhuvi..

Posted by thozar on (May 28, 2014, 22:41 GMT)

I am surprised at the pessimism displayed by some Indian fans in this article. Guys, this is England (not the England of 2011 which was on the rise but an England team that would be missing Strauss, Trott, Swann, and above all, KP) not South Africa. Anderson's powers are on the wane and Stuart Broad is injury prone. Their batsmen except Cook and Bell have no experience. England is ripe for the taking. I expect big scores for Pujara, Kohli, and Rahane and some whirlwind, rollicking starts from Dhawan that would demoralize their bowlers. Bhuvi to take 3 or 4 wickets consistently with the new ball and Shami to clean up the rest. This is going to be a fun series for Indian fans. Are you guys even following England's one day series against Sri Lanka? They were cleaned up for 99 against a mediocre attack and lost by over 150 runs. What makes anyone of you think they will fare better against us?

Posted by android_user on (May 28, 2014, 22:41 GMT)

why not have umesh yadav in place of pankaj singh, he is bowling well and is in form

Posted by thozar on (May 28, 2014, 22:26 GMT)

Gambhir was a great selection but I am shocked that they have chosen to drop Zaheer Khan and failed to pick Harbhajan again. I like Ashwin but this was always going to be Harbhajan's comeback series as the English are weak against quality spin and are at their lowest ebb. Harbhajan has been brilliant at the IPL and has foxed better batsmen. He would have been a handful for the poor England batsmen.

Zaheer, Shami, and Umesh would have been my 3 bowlers to start the series but now we are missing 2 of them. Who would be Dhoni's pacemen now? Shami, Bhuvi, and Ishant/Varun? They would all be good enough for England but I would have selected one bowler with some experience instead of Bhuvi like Zaheer. While Bhuvi struggles with the old ball, he could easily wreck the England top/middle order with 3 or 4 strikes with the new ball. Perhaps that is why they picked him but he may not be the same force against better teams.

I still go with 3-0, or with some luck even 4-0, win for India.

Posted by android_user on (May 28, 2014, 22:24 GMT)

Sandeep sharma for Ishant, Rishi Dhawan for Binny, Vijay zol (even if he fails it will be a learning opprtunity for the youngster) for Ghambir. Rest looks ok. Thought about Samson but as someone mentioned MSD will play all 5 tests unless he gets injured so no point wasting Samson.

Posted by S.Anand on (May 28, 2014, 22:14 GMT)

Now the team selection is over, it would be sensible to send the 8 players (MSD,VK,SD,RS,RJ,RA, BK,MS) or at least 4 batsmen to England one month in advance, instead of resting. All these players are coming straight from T20 and Indian conditions. They should tune their mindset to the Tests and ODIs. It would be advisable to get enough training in England in advance and acclimatise the conditions. Even if this is not done, it is good idea to choose a venue like Dharamsala in India which will assist fast bowlers. Until the BCCI plan and schedule the training sessions or county matches in England or any venue in India which assists fast bowling, before the test series, Indian team will always find it difficult even to draw the series, leave alone winning. FYI.. Sri Lanka has done it already by sending Sangakkara in advance.

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 22:02 GMT)

why the hell is ishant in and yadav out.. that was more shocking to me than binny's inclusion..ishant bowls slower than praveen kumar nowadays, he is the worst bowler of the current lot, even with his 'experience' playing in England.... he wasnt even good enuf to make it in the Sunrisers team and the selectors think that he's good enough for the Indan team.. interesting choice... Bhuvi, Yadav, Shami n Pandey/aaron would have been ideal in the XI along with a spinner.. Dhoni will never win a series abroad..

Posted by Jaffa79 on (May 28, 2014, 22:01 GMT)

India seem light in the spin department. Jadeja is ok as a second spinner/holding bowler but unless Ashwin has radically improved I don't think Eengland have much to fear there. I know Mishra is erratic but he has a good wrong 'un. I'd have taken him as England have had well documented problems with leggies/mystery bowlers.

Posted by android_user on (May 28, 2014, 21:52 GMT)

this is a horrible news for india cricket that zaheer is not playing test series against England.

Posted by arby182 on (May 28, 2014, 21:49 GMT)

It is good to have a spare opener in Gambhir. The selection has surprises like the inclusion of Binny who is a mediocre bowler & batsmen. Irfan Pathan is a better all rounder than Binny. Another surprise exclusion is Umesh Yadav who has been bowling well in the IPL. To have 6 pace bowlers is perhaps an overkill. Instead, we could have had a spin bowler in Amit Mishra in place of a pace bowler. Well, let us hope for the best in the forthcoming series in UK.

Posted by AnoMaLy on (May 28, 2014, 21:24 GMT)

Poor team selection. Have to admit selectors have lost it and we used to blame Dhoni all the time for our overseas losses. Did Dhoni have a say? Gambhir, Dhawan or Vijay are clearly not good enough for opening spots when facing quality swing bowlers. But we know this already and we still keep picking them? Why?? Gambhir and Dhawan have bad techniques against rising deliveries and just can't stop fishing to the balls outside the off stamp without any feet movement. Vijay although might look good when defending has struggled to go past 30 or 40 and lacks the confidence to make big scores. I'd rather see some youngsters or ranji openers fail then see these seniors fail repeatedly. Bowling selection is ok but the fans would have liked to see someone like PK who was the only shining star in the last eng tour picked as a reserve in place of binny. Binny has no place in the test format. Experience matters, this is a very important tour and the team selection hardly inspires any confidence.

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 21:11 GMT)

lol ishant sharma in the team again no chance india wins any tests in england varun aaron hasn't proved anything shoulda been wise to take umesh yadav and zaheer khan who is the most experienced indian bowlers rayudu should have been given more chances how many chances have rohit sharma gotten and failed he only scores his runs in india

Posted by sidban4 on (May 28, 2014, 20:56 GMT)

Also, I would have liked to see a wrist spinner picked - either Amit Sharma or probably even Karn Sharma. Ashwin's overseas record is very poor, which imo is down to his very weak action and the lack of follow through due to which he is unable to get turn on unhelpful pitches. I am a fan of Sir Jaddu, but think he is good as a holding/fifth bowler and not a frontline spinner. He would have been ideal for a team like SA which has a strong pace attack and needs a spinner to keep things tight when bowling, but not for India where spinners are expected to pick wickets. The time was ripe to pick on the English after a demoralizing Ashes, but I doubt the selected team has the skill, temperament or the wherewithal to pull off a heist.

Posted by SanjivAwesome on (May 28, 2014, 20:55 GMT)

Once again, our selectors have made the fatal mistake of selecting "India- environment players" to play in the alien environment of England - Binny, Gambhir, Dhawan, Rohit, Rahane, Ashwin. Another 0-5 wipe out is guaranteed.

No Umesh Yadav has got to be the worst selection ever, Binny and Ishant over UY. Umesh did not get into a 18 member squad ? really

Posted by Coolcapricorn on (May 28, 2014, 20:14 GMT)

God help us if Stuart Binny gets to play all the Tests in England as he is a poor imitation of an all-rounder - at best he should only be an ODI player. Ridiculous going back to Gambhir - when Robin Uthappa could have instead been given a chance to back up Vijay & Dhawan. Umesh Yadav should have been chosen instead of Ishant - who may have had a good tour of NZ but who is still averaging nearly 38 for his Test wickets. Yadav has genuine pace & judging from his impressive performance in today's IPL match, seems to have learnt a few new things - perhaps from the guidance of the great Wasim Akram. With MSD's poor Test captaincy & team selection, we'll be lucky to win even one Test, let alone the series!

Hope India lose 5-0, I am die hard Indian Fan, but for betterment of Indian Team's future, I want India to lose 5-0 so that we can change our test captain and with him his favorite players are out i.e: Jadeja, Ashwin, Pandey, Vijay etc and bring in young talent..

Posted by drose17 on (May 28, 2014, 20:04 GMT)

Why Binny if he can't do good even in odi,t20,ipl why pick Saha why not robin ishant is garbage

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 20:02 GMT)

Again a Dhonis team......... y ashwin and jadeja is in team???????????? murli vijay and dhawan would they cross a 30 mark in england????? we gonna lose the series 5-0, and the reason will be MSD,

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 19:50 GMT)

I dont understand after how much loss India specially MSD and selectors will know that Ashwin is of no use in Overseas even Amit Mishra and few young leggie will be the good choice. Why no Sehwag?? Till present most opponent fears for his solid attacking start..Vijay who havent scored fifty i think in current year IPL has given chance..Oh common selectors please either u resign yourself or select valuable players and stop biasing...look at Sanju samson,Karan sharma even Pravin Tambe,Uthappa and Umesh Yadav, they deserves place but NO....please i request you leave the job as selectors...

Posted by PRaj1 on (May 28, 2014, 19:46 GMT)

i think Gambhir in good form will prove to be good partner for Dhawan- key is solild opening stance , thats the half battle won. I know lots of people are bashing gambir's inclusion, guys please don't go too hard on him - atleast wait for this series. I agree with Eevryone On ishant sharma , too much time and resources spent on him. Why stuart binny ? - I would replace stuart binny by ambati raydu any day .

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 19:45 GMT)

i would go for a gambhir pujara opening pair..followed by dhawan..

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 19:34 GMT)

Some observations

1. Indian fans may follow cricket, but they do not have the deep knowledge and insight required. England is not IPL. Uthappa has scored runs in IPL and people want him in the test squad now? Someone mentioned Viru- what the heck?

2. I would have picked PK for Bangladesh and would have potentially added him to the squad in England because he was commendable last time around in England. How has Umesh Yadav missed out is beyond my imagination?

3. I would have picked DK as the second wicket keeper because he is a better batsmen than Saha. DK also has experience opening in England, which he did remarkably well in 2007. One also has to ask whether Dhoni deserves to be in the Indian test line up.

4. Ashwin and Jadeja will struggle in England. Ashwin struggled in 2011 and he will struggle this time around too. Quality spinners are able to at the very least keep it tight in England, but Ashwin and Jadeja only thrive on turners.

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 19:32 GMT)

@ Zaheer Hussein: Saha is the better wicketkeeper, by some distance. Uthappa is NOT a Test gloveman. Granted that Uthappa should have been in as a specialist batsman. Possibly in place of Gambhir. Gambhir cannot play on seaming tracks or pitches with bounce. His crabby style is suited to pitches with low bounce.

Posted by jb633 on (May 28, 2014, 19:31 GMT)

People saying 5-0 to England must not have watched much of us in the last 8 months. Indian fans, this is not the same side that smashed you in 2011, this is nowhere even close to that side. I would expect India to go into the series as marginal favourites and Ghambir is a good batsmen. Personally I think both Ashwin and Jadeja lack class in any conditions that don't turn square and certainly they are not a threat like Harbhajan or Ojha would be.

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 19:30 GMT)

Very happy to see Pankaj Singh's name in there, has been a very consistent domestic performer for many many years, and deserves his call up. Stuart Binny over Rishi Dhawan for test cricket? Seriously? Has to be the most obnoxious selection in recent times. Gambhir back for doing exactly what? And no Umesh Yadav?

Posted by parikshit_Ops on (May 28, 2014, 19:29 GMT)

Though I am not from Karnataka. Its indeed a surprise to see no Karnataka player except Binny making it to Squad in-spite of their Ranaji win. Yes there aren't many vacant places but KL Rahul would have better choice for opener than Mr. Gambhir.

Posted by ProdigyA on (May 28, 2014, 19:20 GMT)

The most shocking decision is of Dhoni himself. What has he done to deserve a spot in the Test team. His captaincy in Tests is useless too, its defensive, no innovation, no experimentation, no accountability. Even if we lose match after match, you will not see any change in the squad.

Posted by parikshit_Ops on (May 28, 2014, 19:18 GMT)

Stuart Binny should not be part of 30 Members Test Squad , let alone 18. Taking Gambhir is a bit controversial, maybe some young opener could have been picked or Rohit Sharna could have been moved as an opener. I was expecting Jadhav to be part of test squad because of his brilliant domestic season but he missed and so did Rayudu. Rayudu , I believe is more suitable for ODI than Tests. Dropping Umesh is a bad decision. India's bowling will decide the outcome of test series. I would love to have a legspinner in Indian Squad. Anyway a tough and decisive series. Hope we can win atleast 1 Test and draw another. I would be quite content with 3-1. Fingers crossed #

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 19:14 GMT)

I fear that with the inclusion of GG as a reserved opener, Dhoni just might be a bit too ambitious over the choice of openers. I am sure that he will start the series with Dhawan and Vijay, however if they/or one of them fails in first 2 matches, they might well be dropped. However, MSD need to remember that it is a 5 match series and dropping anyone of the 2 can be a poor decision, especially after the Newzealand series.

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 19:12 GMT)

India fast bowling selection missed variety. No Umesh or No left arm fast bowler!.

How Vaorun Arun is picked!. is he done anything well in domestic level recently?. or is he done well when he got the chance in shorter format?. If he can come back to the team after long injury straight away then why no praveen kumar!.

India losing in overseas always because they don't select proper players or playing xl. No back up batsmen!. if aswin failed in bowling then no backup spinner in the team.

Posted by Cricfever_PM on (May 28, 2014, 19:06 GMT)

GG selection is certainly needed as we can't believe in Vijay to perform there in England, The bowling attack looks clue less and still we can beat them with the will power as Aus done it in ashes. So believe in yourself and i am sure this time it won't be like last time as Eng also totally out of form and not having great touch so it's good opportunity to win the match in overseas.

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 19:00 GMT)

@CurrentPresident- Most of your points are way off the mark man.. Gambhir was never that good? Check your 2008-10 stats man. And jadeja spin is bad.. ? Why is he the most effective for India abroad?

Posted by rsurya on (May 28, 2014, 18:52 GMT)

Ishanth Sharma the great is surely better than Praveen kumar. PK is known for his swing and early wickets but our super star Ishanth is known for 'hit me' deliveries and yearly wickets. If I am Ishanth I will buy a lottery daily.

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 18:44 GMT)

guy I do see some over the top reactions by poster.out of 18 selected there are about 2-3 selections fans are angry and worried about. lets take them one by one.Why Ishant? He has been an agony ever since his debut series. He has not done anything worth talking about in last 3-4 years. But for some reason he is liked by Dhoni.Plus he had a decent NZ series,so he is in. Gambhir: On tours like this you need three openers.Look at the domestic circuit, how many decent openers we have?Rahul,Jivanjot?Trust me, England is the worst place to start your career as an opener. So, lack of options, and hence Gambhir.Saha: He is considered as the best glove man in India, even better then Dhoni so, he is dhoni's back up for the tour.

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 18:43 GMT)

Ishawar Pandey in Indian team , give me a break , has selection committee gone crazy or is CSK == India

Posted by CricLover316 on (May 28, 2014, 18:43 GMT)

Ashwin was dropped for the last three tests india played abroad due to lack of form. yet, he finds himself in the team for a 5 TEST series! ridiculous! Dhoni has killed Mishra's Career. Never tried him after he became the Captain. After Kumble retired, Mishra would have been an integral part. Kohii brought Mishra back in the Asia Cup where he was brilliant. Mishra had a great WT20 and the media praised Dhoni for backing him up. Other spinners will get a chance when Dhoni retires as Captain. If you really think Ashwin, who bowls round the wicket negative line and predictable length is better than Mishra, then you got another thing coming. Leg Spinner was a MUST in the team.

Posted by android_user on (May 28, 2014, 18:15 GMT)

Opnening batsmen for the Indian team at least for the first 2 matches would be Dhawan and Vijay. Some would prefer Gambhir over Vijay but Dhoni would go with a left right combination and you cant replace Dhawan as he had a good test series in New Zealand. Dhoni would be forced to bring Gambhir if the openers fail in2 matches

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 18:09 GMT)

I thought Uthappa was certain. Unbelievable that Saha got selected over Uthappa.

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 18:08 GMT)

2014 was India's opportunity to humiliate England; they have missedthe chance through pitiful team selection - Jadeja and Ashwin the only spinners, no Praveen, no Robbie. A mediocre team with few bowlers to fear. No Yadav? Shocking.

Posted by CurrentPresident on (May 28, 2014, 18:08 GMT)

More or less expected squad, except: - Gambhir not needed, he never was that good, we have better alternatives. - Umesh Yadav should have been there. - A quality leg spinner is missing. Lots of promising youngsters are available.

Pace is fine (and our pace bowlers are not that great yet), but it is spin that will win you matches against England. Not Jadeja spin, but proper spin like Harbhajan or Warne.

Posted by CricLover316 on (May 28, 2014, 17:59 GMT)

Chill Guys. Pankaj Singh wont even be picked,we all know that. Ish,Shami are the "Goto" Bowlers of Dhoni. Isnt that funny, but thats true. Zak was unfit otherwise he would have been picked. India will never win a test overseas until Dhoni is the Test Captain with his Stubborn selections and giving players a very long rope until they become Complacent and still play them. Why always the onus is on the Batsmen and they are criticized when Ind lose ? A bunch of Young Batsmen in terms of Test Experience overseas have done well. Whats the use of Ishant Sharma? No,he is an Experience Bowler, "A Seasoned Campaigner" and "We should back the players". I want to criticize the Selection Panel, more the Captain. Lets be honest a Captain can suggest the players to pick.

When India wins, Dhoni"Same Team. No change in a Winning Combination" When India loses,"We need to back our players. Our bowlers did not bowl well. Its important to back them." Back them so much that they take it for granted? Ok

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 17:57 GMT)

surprising Gambhir gets chosen over the likes of Rayudu.. Rayudu has been solid in technique and Gambhir so so many times has fallen to balls outside off.. Consistency is the key and Gambhir might just not be the right person for that.. Rayudu - if he is given time to bat has proven he is very calm and doesn't try to experiment too much and he has all the shots to score freely.. Stuart Binny's inclusion is a puzzler!! although they're jus gonna be warming the benches IMO..

Posted by CricLover316 on (May 28, 2014, 17:43 GMT)

@ShivaCT - Its a Mystery to me and every Cricket fan. Its an embarrassment to many great players that haven't played 50 Tests. Can any one tell me one positive of having Ishant Sharma in the team? I would have 10 players and a sub in the team than bowling him. Stubborness of MSD of playing the same fast bowlers and below mediocre ones that India has lost many tests. Ishant sharma wouldn't make a Nepal Cricket Team. I'm embarassed. I thought India were trying to Win a game not gift it before being played. England Fans, Dernbach's coming to bowl you. Its their Christmas. Just imagine how much Umesh Yadav and a leggie would have helped India's causes? We"ll see Dhoni's personal favs Ash,Shami,Ish bowling and Pandey may be,No Bhuvi. mark it. Its upto Kohli,Pujara now as always. Binny, Oh yes, because he adds umm.. Balance right or he is a "Team" player.

Posted by android_user on (May 28, 2014, 17:41 GMT)

Very poor descission from selector. why Gambhir????? why not Viru????? Viru scored more runs than Gambhir in IPL & also Domestic. India can't win the series.

Posted by CricLover316 on (May 28, 2014, 17:33 GMT)

And Ashwin... What was his record in SA and NZ ? Duminy picked more wickets than him. This is Embarrassing to me. Its just sad that no leg spinner has been picked. Mishra,Karn Sharma would be effective than Ash any day of the week. The leg spinners should play for CSK 1st,then he"ll be given a chance may be. Now,its all upto the batsmen to do the job and get big scores and save some grace for the team as they did in the last tours. Isnt it sad that everytime Indian Batsmen have to score big to have Ind any chance of winning a game.300+/400+ Scores and Dhoni's stubbornness in Selecting playing and having the same tactics. Ind played the same team in SA and NZ Tests except swap between Ash and Jaad, why Dhoni never changes the seamers for God's sake. This policy of backing the players too much has made them complacent and so they take their places for granted and everything comes to Kohli,Pujara and now Rahane in Tests. Thats how India's fate is decided in tests.Happy to see Gambhir.

Posted by coldcoffee123 on (May 28, 2014, 17:24 GMT)

Gambhir's time as an international cricketer is well and truly over. Have you seen the way he fishes and pokes outside offstump? Most of his runs are from edges. Rarely finds the middle of the bat. Has been doing it for the past 5 years. Failed in domestic season and IPL. I reckon he will not cross 20 runs in any of the innings in England. Even though Sehwag is not scoring big runs, he is middling the ball awfully well. Should have been picked as first choice opener. Also, Tests bring out his belligerent best. Get ready for another international tour with no significant contribution from the openers, which means another series whitewash.

Posted by CricLover316 on (May 28, 2014, 17:22 GMT)

Why Stuart Binny and Ishant Sharma ?? Two Quicks in Yadav and Aaron along with Bhuvi/Ishwar would have been a perfect combo. Indian Cricket Fans are tired of seeing Ishant. Playing since 7 Years,he is just not willing to learn or doesnt have any idea how be bowls. Worst Average in History for a front line bowler. Its a travesty that he has went on to play 50+ Tests, while the new crop of Bowlers will never be tried. Markit-MSD will pick Shami,Aaron,Ish and go with Ashwin and Jaad as two spinners.Only reason Zak wasn't picked was due to fitness. Dhoni changes the sinners never tries any new fast bowler in tests. The same bunch of pace bowlers in the last 4 Tests.People say why India lose overseas, its not because of the batsmen, its because of the Mediocre/Unfit (Ish/Zak)bowlers Dhoni loves to play. Cant remember the last time Ish was dropped in tests. Imagine Dernbach playing 50+ Tests. My God! Never uses his height, same length bowling and is slower than Bhuvi these days. We are Screwed

Posted by BhushanPheonix on (May 28, 2014, 17:08 GMT)

Its really really surprising.... To have Stuart Binny over Robin Uthappa when i see all the matches in the IPL Robin has been the most consistent batsmen who has scored runs in the best possible correct cricketing shots and the team has been selected with most of the persons out of form like Stuart Binny and Murali Vijay... this is very surprising.....

Posted by Srimanth on (May 28, 2014, 17:04 GMT)

where is ojha???? Best test spinner for india. Chawla may also be a better pick for the spinner slot as chawla can bat too. Umesh yadav should be there in team because he has good pace & bounce. If umesh is trained well, he will do better for india. Batting selection is good. But not good bowling selection.

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 16:57 GMT)

Some very ordinary team selections...cant see any logic behind persistence with Ishant Sharma who had been a consistent failure in all major overseas tours till date..Umesh Yadav's exclusion is a huge surprise..probably selectors forgot that he is around..Stuart Binny does not even come close in the first XI national T20 squad ..let alone test squad !!!...& the whole world knows English batsmens weakness against leg spin...but no right arm leg spinner in the side...who would have been very handy after july in England....Gambhirs was a good selection..maybe Uthappa deserved a place too...however the selectors have got a few things wrong as could result in a dissappointing tour

Posted by realfan on (May 28, 2014, 16:56 GMT)

gambir selection is welcoming... some experience will come in handy.. but where do we fill him?? can dhoni replce his pet vijay with gambir or dhawan ith gambir??? or will he drop another bowler for gambir??? i would say open with vijay and gambir followed by pujara, kohli, rahane, jaddu, dhoni ,ashwin, shami, ishwar, pankaj( if umesh is available then umesh )

dhawan, ishant, binny wont find a place in any 11, not even in indian Z team... . as far as rohit is concerned i would not drop anyone for rohit in this current team.. varun has some work to do ... and i desperately want jaddu to play at 5 but i wont play rahane any lesser order... so jaddu occupies 6 ...that give him more time to score

Posted by wapuser on (May 28, 2014, 16:51 GMT)

Very happy to see Pankaj Singh in team. Hope he bowls with the same confidence he shows in Ranji matches. Have a feeling he will do well if he does not get overawed in this relatively "new" environment.

Posted by RahulWise on (May 28, 2014, 16:48 GMT)

Those who wants Uttappa into the test squad, please see his way of batting... now and even in the past... he is no good player of back foot, esp on offside, he can do good on front foot, no doubt, but with ball swinging and bouncing in england, he can not see any success in england. better to leave him out and have him for one days only.

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 16:32 GMT)

May be Umesh Yadav is not selected , as he might be given chance in Australia A vs India A , Unofficial test in July , it might be good for Umesh Yadav to get the experience in Australia before the WC15

Posted by ShivaCT on (May 28, 2014, 16:31 GMT)

We, the fraternity of Indian cricket supporters, will forever be perplexed by team selections. That said, it has to be one of the biggest mysteries ever as to how and why Ishant Sharma keeps getting selected for the Test team! Before you jump to defend him, please bear in mind that I am NOT talking about ODI and T20 selections. Unless he has been sidelined by injury, Umesh Yadav would have been a great replacement instead of Ishant. Regardless, we get to see a full 5-Test series after a long time and that too, at cricket's HQ. Can't wait.....

I would have gone for IPathan instead of Binny for an all rounder spot. Pathan experienced, he could find his bowling form back in english conditions, batting is good enough. Saha or DK, doesnt matter as Dhoni is going to play all the way.

Posted by batman_gothamcity on (May 28, 2014, 16:16 GMT)

Ashwin /Jadega .. same mindset again by selectors , for test you require attacking spinners on day 4 and 5 importantly who can spin the ball . Tambe or a Piyush Chawla or any other domestic player would had been better choice . Ashwin and Jadega should be picked for Bangla tour and rested for England .

Posted by fairfan70 on (May 28, 2014, 16:11 GMT)

I have a feeling that this team will get drubbed 5-0 by England. The batting department looks somewhat okay but bowling is just no good to test English Batsmen in their home conditions.

Posted by espncricinfomobile on (May 28, 2014, 15:51 GMT)

Pathetic team for an overseas tour. Baffling selections of murali vijay and Stuart binny. No robin uthappa is also surprising. Wouldn't me surprised if a 5-0 whitewash happens.

Posted by murthydn16 on (May 28, 2014, 15:43 GMT)

Why Umesh and Uthappa are not there? Rohit has been given umpteen opportunities but he has never utilised it. Ashwin and Jadeja are good only in subcontinents. Ashwin was a disaster in SA. What Pankaj singh has done for a call and that too for test matches? And ofcourse why Ishant? Ridiculous selection.

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 15:42 GMT)

India's fastest bowler and quite pacy even in world standards Umesh Yadav is ignored from the squad.....Only the selectors and captain MS Dhoni who has traditionally been a conservative captain favouring line and length stuff over pace can explain.....Disgraceful!!

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 15:39 GMT)

Only one great selection and that is Pankaj Singh finally getting reward for his outanding performances for many years. Many pathetic selections. a)No reserve batsman but why???? b)Stuart Binny as allrounder - Look at the performance of LR Shukla in Ranji trophy how he has batted in green tops and single handedly carried bengal to semis c)Why varon Aaron who doesnt last a full season? d)Why Ishan Sharma? - How long do u want to play him? Umesh Yadav is the future always go with him e)Zaheer Khan if he was fit should have been there f)Why Ashwin and Jadeja it has been proven they are ineffective in test matches. I would go with Harbajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha for sure

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 15:36 GMT)

I am surprised why people arent questioning dhonis inclusion in the team let alone him being captain. His batting has been more pathetic than his captaincy in overseas test matches and his keeping hasnt been up to standards as well ! India are just wasting a batting spot with him being in the test team especialy overseas

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 15:33 GMT)

Its a poor team , will loose badly as in the past , Indian selectors have not learnt their lessons and have not picked the best bowler Umesh yadav , i dont know they are selecting the team to defeat England or to loose the series, whay is IShant, Pamkaj Singh are selected, why Umesh is dropped, why Ashwin gets selected for foreign trips despite his poor overseas record. Ishant and Pankaj Singh are not even fit to play for any club of England.

Posted by j4884 on (May 28, 2014, 15:33 GMT)

@anilkp Umesh Yadav can't take wickets?? Umesh had a style rate of 46 in tests which is the best among Indian pacers. While ishant strike rate is 62! You also seem to have forgotten Umesh's 5 wicket haul in Australia and his performances against England in India at home before he got injured. Umesh is not a t20 or odi bowler because he can be expensive but what he will do is he will pick u wickets that's why he is a must in tests. He can swing the ball both ways upfront at high pace and come back and reverse swing when the ball gets old...

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 15:31 GMT)

What are Ishwar Pandey and Stuart Binny doing in a Test squad? India should have included someone like Umesh, who can swing the ball and is fast in the air. This doesn't seem as India XI, rather it is Dhoni(/CSK) XI. Pathetic!

Posted by Dhanno on (May 28, 2014, 15:24 GMT)

Stuart Binny. not trusted by Rajastan to bowl even 1 over per match. 13 matches 9 overs in IPL this season. cannot bat, SR of 100 barely and goes to England. Enough reason to have only 1 extra batsman, they should have also kept only 1 extra bowler. Once someone is injured SB can come in as "allrounder" replacement.

Posted by Amar_bw on (May 28, 2014, 15:14 GMT)

I can already see miserable loss for India in England unless any miracle happens. How many times the selectors are going to make the same mistake? Gambhir can only perform within the Indian subcontinent. Simply based on the IPL performance, which wasn't really great anyway, the selectors are including him again? Gambhir was never successful in England, Australia, WI, SA, except one century in SA. Selectors are wasting an opportunity to rebuild and include youngsters.

Posted by siddhartha87 on (May 28, 2014, 15:10 GMT)

Umesh Yadav's test strike rate is 46 which is fantastic.Shame that he is excluded. And Gambhir, really? Anderson and Broad will demolish this fragile Indian openers.5-0 for England if rain does not save India.

Posted by rmaganti on (May 28, 2014, 15:07 GMT)

I don't understand selectors choices. Why has Umesh Yadav been ignored? If Ishanth Sharma can get a million opportunities, Umesh Yadav, who is a young and enthusiastic fast bowler deserves more than a couple of opportunities. Aaron Varun, Stuart Binny and Pankaj Singh will be passengers on this trip. 18 man squad is just expansive.I would have preferred a youngster like Sandeep Sharma, who showed a lot of promise with his swing.

My XI: Dhawan, Pujara, Gambhir, Kohli, Rahane, MSD, Binny, Jadeja, Bhuvi, Shami and Aaron. Binny can be a very handy seamer in English conditions, Bhuvi can be lethal with new ball and line, Shami with new and old ball and Aaron with his length and pace. Jadeja is lone spinner in team because he is a more reliable batsman than Ashwin. Gambhir should bat at 3 to keep left right combination for top 4. Overall, good squad!

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 14:54 GMT)

spinners harbhajan & ojha are a must--- if india has to win in test matches. (selectors should not have missed this trick) (spinners ashwin & jadeja could have been accomodated in ODI & t20 ,with future in mind) (other than that this team is a good one)

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 14:52 GMT)

Outrageous! what is ground on earth which allow inclusion of Ishant sharma and exclusion of Umesh Yadav , exclusion of Harbhajan and inclusion of R.Ashwin. There may be reason for selector but I am sure that It must be non cricketing reasons .

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 14:41 GMT)

Amazing selection and absolutely pathetic, reasons: 1- We all know how good we are in terms of batting in seaming conditions, and with that no or only 1 reserve batsman (what abt injuries). 2- Binny in test matches is a joke, and so would be Rishi Dhawan (please do not call them all rounders, they bowl at 100kmph, overseas players will hit them in their sleep). 3- Bowling- amazing again not to see Umesh selected (if not injured or fully fit), now this is guy we would want to see in full flow and bowl swinging deliveries upto the batsman with pace, but no we seem to have forgotten him. Ishant being there is a joke of the century, cmon when are we going to learn, what good is experience if you have an empty head. Pankaj SIngh, Ishwar Pandey (both military medium pacer). With Ashwin and Jaddu- we actually don't have a spinner either.

All hopes are on Bhuvi, Shami and maybe Aaron will play ad 3rd seamer. but then again i do not think we can pick 20 wickets

Getting ready for a 5-0 score

Posted by crazyguru on (May 28, 2014, 14:37 GMT)

Binny is a fair choice. you need a decent medium pacer who can bat. He can act as a fifth bowler if it all he is in the eleven. But where is umesh yadav? just as a type he got three wickets for kkr. what a shame

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 14:35 GMT)

from Karachi, Why Umesh yadav is wasted by India .. if MS Dhoni wants to develop a fast bowling allrounder for the world cup, why not stick with irfan pathan, he is still a better player than binny in bowling and batting... this agency and marketing policy will destro

Posted by wapuser on (May 28, 2014, 14:33 GMT)

So good news for pankaj singh ....he should get a chance there in playing 11 ...over ishant sharma....why they are picking him....his record is ordinary than ordinary....

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 14:33 GMT)

very bad selection. india's bowling is weak point, zaheer & umesh yadav should have been included as its a very long 5 test series, also wasim jaffer who has 30k domestic runs under his belt should be given a chance instead of over aggressive gambhir. none of above who are new inclusions deserved to be included except pankaj singh. also dhoni's test captaincy is very bad overseas. india cricket needs serious reforms or it will again be drubbed 5-0 just like any overseas tour.

Posted by android_user on (May 28, 2014, 14:32 GMT)

I think leg spinner should be there.......young karanveer could be good.....he has great potential

Posted by Kashi0127 on (May 28, 2014, 14:32 GMT)

Pathetic selection! I hope and wish India lose miserably for no selecting Uthappa, Karun Nair and worst for bringing back Gambhir

Posted by Raki99 on (May 28, 2014, 14:12 GMT)

Good they finally made a call on Zaheer, That's a Good call But I don't know on what basis they have selected binny. Horrible call. I don't think he will play a single game. I think they needed to groom another batsman may be a middle order batsman. I only hope it doesn't get embarrassing again just like 2011. Also a Very bad call on Not selecting Umesh yadav. So the question is can we pick 20 wickets to win a test? This should be the last series for Dhoni as a captain if we can't be competitive.

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 14:10 GMT)

Where is Mohit Sharma? He is doing well in IPL. He must be there in the INDIAN TEAM.

Posted by Sudhir65 on (May 28, 2014, 14:09 GMT)

Shami has been struggling since Asia Cup. Yadav was a much better bet than him.

Posted by subramaniya on (May 28, 2014, 14:03 GMT)

Very very poor & unhappy with selection & tour. 1st Dhoni's captaincy, y the selectors r going with him. he couldn't prove as a captain in overseas than sub- continent the patil & co are giving him the chance again and again very poooooor. 2nd Gambhir r rohit sharma could have been promoted as captain. the selectors should take the risk. 3rd Umesh yadav would be a better bowler than ishant sharma. After ipl india should have been send to england ,let them have some time to get adjust to conditions there & more practice matches would have been good for the inexperienced players. Selectors should think about india not about players. Unhappy very very very very unhappy.

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 13:56 GMT)

its bit tough to belive that last match ojha played he picked up 10 wickets and since than he is been dropped from 3 test series on trot hatts off selectors. only the selectors know how good vijay n dhawan are in overseas condition amazing decision. ashwin inspite been thrown to cleaners in S africa (tset n odi), New zeland(test n odi), aussies at home he is still there plz some one ask this to selectors ahead of mishra n ojha may be bhajji would have been better choice . only god can tell you wheather jadeja is a test product just tell me how many of the jadeja's fifty in odi have come in winning cause. ishwar pandey cant find a place in bandladesh tour but is he good enough for england. he didnt played in kiwi tour because he didnt had the qualification critirea of playing for csk. how can you ignore WASIM JAFFER inspite of scoring runs in domestic level if you say pandey has picked wickets in domestic than jaffer as scored runs

Posted by android_user on (May 28, 2014, 13:53 GMT)

Ishant took 15 wickets in last series in new zealand .Two six fors .I think it should have been Umesh instead of Varun aaron

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 13:52 GMT)

Stuat binny should get to play all 5 tests. He is the swing-seam all rounder india has been desperately awaiting for..He should play at NO.7 My XI ; Gambhir, Dhawan, Pujara, Kohli, Rahane, MS Dhoni, Binny, Ashwin, B Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Pankaj Singh.

Stuart binny has been selected on the inssistence of MS dhoni, He realizes the need of an all rounder

Posted by anilkp on (May 28, 2014, 13:50 GMT)

@j4884 : Umesh Yadav is doing what you said, but in T20s. That cannot qualify him for Tests. Binny is not a great prospect, but he is there for his recent domestic performance in multi-day format. Umesh bowls untiringly, but that is not the virtue you need when you leak boundaries at will with seldom any wicket to show. For me, Umesh, Vinay, Zaheer, even Ishant, are all past. But wait: don't you guys get excited with Aaron; don't forget how fragile he has been. It will be a miracle if he plays three games.

Posted by android_user on (May 28, 2014, 13:49 GMT)

very very selection for the test team. I wonder why gambhir, binny are in the squad. what about K.L.Rahul, Sanju Samson, Umesh Yadav, Robin Utthappa and so many others who performed in Ranji trophy. It is redicoulous to select people like Ishtant Sharma, Binny, Pankaj Singh, Murali Vijay and Gambhir. What these have done to be selected for the rest tour

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 13:45 GMT)

Ridiculous selection.....Where is Umesh Yadav???....How come Ashwin got a place again for foreign tour???....Bhajji could have been given a thought...and Y on the earth is Stuart Binny in the list......there are many players like Rishi dhawan,Ambatai Rayudu, Kedhar Jadhav whose performance has been far better than Binny ???.......Come on selectors,,,,dont be partial.....grow up..... :)

Posted by testcricketfan123 on (May 28, 2014, 13:45 GMT)

@Muhammad Murad Stuart Binny is no allrounder in my view he's a batsman who can bowl a bit n he's not that good as a batsman u expect him taking wickets with his bowling....120kph not much movement he'll be taken apart......though he's done decently in domestic cricket there have been better performing allrounders like Rishi Dhawan avg 40 od with the bat n low 20's with the ball he would have done a much better job in ENgland especially with the ball

Posted by Retour on (May 28, 2014, 13:44 GMT)

What a squad! - Ishant, Binny, Vijay in .... Umesh not considered. Also a leg spinner in the squad would have been useful

Posted by wolf777 on (May 28, 2014, 13:43 GMT)

Pankaj singh??? Who's he??? Oh the Rajasthan fast (Really?) bowler...Well, here is his record in last 10 matches that he played in the domestic season...0/15, 3/29, 2/32, 0/6, 1/20, 3/18, 0/37, 2/34, 1/50 & 1/24 total of 13 Wickets…

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 13:41 GMT)

Umesh yadav better option than Varon!. No left arm pace bowler!. i think, India have better all roubders than Binny!.

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 13:31 GMT)

The squad looks good actually but I'd have picked Zaheer in the squad (though not in the first team). Binny shouldn't be in the squad but I'll be very surprised if he gets a game, especially because the top 7 is settled. With 5 tests in 6 weeks we need a really big squad, especially with the mistake made last time with unfit players.

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 13:30 GMT)

I am seriously worried on MVijay selection,Viru scored played well in recent first class matches, wondering about Viru Ommision in the squad.

Posted by j4884 on (May 28, 2014, 13:29 GMT)

Meanwhile Umesh Yadav showing the selectors what he can do....Swing both ways at high pace and getting big wicket of Maxwell. Umesh would have been handful in England. While Dhoni favorite like Ishant will keep on getting chances and perform poorly match after match. Worst test squad selection.

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 13:28 GMT)

Why on earth is Murli vijay still here...?? India could have invested in 3 very bright talents...Manish Pandey, Karun Nair and K L RAHUL!!! They have all had an exceptional Ranji Trpohy season and should have been rewarded. Rohit Sharma has never done anything memorable in tests outside India(SA & NZ series) Binny should(hopefully) become the bowling all rounder that India is imissing.

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 13:28 GMT)

Another recipe for disaster.. why Binny - so bollywood- highly inevitable for son-cricketers to stay away from Team India. Mr. Patil you really need to get your brains working - he could have easily replaced by some test player like Karun Nair, Kedar Jadhav, Saha, etc.

Posted by Lotr3 on (May 28, 2014, 13:20 GMT)

Interesting choices. Yadav for Aaron and Rishi Dhawan for Binny may put more depth to the team. Will be difficult tour with only 1 certain test player (Dhoni) having played there, guys must learn and adapt very quickly. Best of luck.

Posted by AnasK on (May 28, 2014, 13:17 GMT)

I think this squad lacks experience but there are players like Kohli, Pujara and Sharma who are capable to peform well. That's good that they have added Gambhir. But it is really surprising to see only one genuine spinner in the squad!!! Where is PRAGYAN OJHA ? Ashwin has an awful record outside Asia and we saw what happened to him against SA. Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha should have been there in the squad instead of Ashwin and Jadeja.

Posted by CricketChat on (May 28, 2014, 13:11 GMT)

Good call on Zaheer who should retire gracefully now that selectors and captain Dhoni (who knows a thing or two about determining a player's value to the team) have categorically let it be known they don't think he has any future with Ind team. Disappointed that Umesh Yadav was ignored. Granted, he doesn't have great control, but can still be effective due to pace alone even when the pitches don't help pacers. Sandeep Sharma, who can swing the ball both ways should have been included as a back up to B Kumar instead of ever disappointing Binny who can't command a place on either on batting or bowling skills alone. Must have had someone to push his case along big time. My preference is Uthappa over Gambhir on current form. Overall, a decent selection. Good job by selectors! Never easy to select Ind team that satisfies all.

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 13:10 GMT)

Where is Umesh Yadav? I can't believe, Pankaj Singh and Stuart Binny has been selected, these guys bowl like Ganguly. Besides, they have picked seam/swing combination of Shami, Kumar and Pandey and they should have gone with the extra pace of Yadav.

Posted by Mike_Tyson on (May 28, 2014, 13:05 GMT)

Poor squad, no real fast bowler (Aaron is unproven, Ishant to put it bluntly is rubbish). I can see us absolutely hammering India.

Posted by JasonWoodsworth on (May 28, 2014, 13:04 GMT)

India have not won a Test abroad in three years, Wow. Perhaps, India should just play at home on dust bowls or flat pitches ay :)

Posted by savio84 on (May 28, 2014, 13:04 GMT)

Iam shocked to see the squad, i dont know who to blame captain or Selectors, so i will blame both. We are going without a quality spinner. We have tried Ashwin & Jadeja as specialist spinners overseas & it wasnt successful. Yet they have gone same strategy. They dont even want to try Pragyan Ojha. They have picked 6 fast bowlers & no Umesh Yadav one of the best young fast bowlers in the country, ridiculous. He was successful when he toured Australia last time. After that he is simply discarded. I dont understand the logic of including Stuart Binny and Pankaj Singh and im sure both of them will be in the bench. I hope atleast Varun Aaron gets a game. I dont see any fault in choice of batsmen. England is totally down in confidence and they have almost forgot how to win. They are going to get back to their winning ways. 5 tests another whitewash is expected for India. I will be happy if they are able to draw one test match.

Posted by android_user on (May 28, 2014, 13:02 GMT)

Murli V- he did very fair job in South Africa Bhuv. k - He still got the magic touch with him #swing Pankaj- he was probably in top 3 for highest wickets getter in Ranji in last couple of season. Gambhir - he still got that spark left in him , watch last 7 matches of ipl. Ishant- he got to do justice with his abilities, now or never. Aaron- He got that ignite in him but needs to discipline. Binny- He did fairly good with Karnataka in last Ranji season, but he deserve a place? Your call

It would have been nice to see sanju samson in place of saha.. we need to mould this young talent early.. atleast should have picked him for the bangladesh tour..

All Dhoni's friends are playing again,,,Dont know what Vijay and Ashwin is doing in test squad,,,how chances they ll get coz of Dhoni. Sehwag is much better option in any condition. Also Mishra is missing the only spinner who can actualy spin the ball. We all know what is going to happen in England again.HAPPY FOR GAMBHIR

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 12:56 GMT)

I believe sturat binny is fair selection..India definetly need a swing-seam all rounder in foreign conditions. And his selection is on merit. He played superbly as an all rounder role in the Irani trophy getting a 100 and 5 wickets. Moreover MS Dhoni has been seeing him quite a lot in the nets and would have got highly impressed with his all round abilities. Remember how india lost both in new zeland and south africa.....Bolwers had a BURN OUT... India needs an all rounder NO. 7 position guys.. Stuart Binny is the GUY,,,,he has proved himslef in the ranji trophy level for quite some years now

cmmon agin All dhoni's friends are playing. dont know what ashwin, vijay and jadeja doing in test squad. ...Sehwag is much much better opener in any condition. how many chances these guys will get just because of Dhoni. everyones angry about binny but now that i've seen ishwar pandey bowl in ipl i am no doubt more worried about him. he plays for CSK so is automatically top of dhonis list along with his favourite ishant sharma.. Pandey is even slower than sharma with similarly poor lines and little swing... It will be a repeat of rp singh in england in 2011 but this time with pandey. Binny wont even get a game so im not worried about him. Just a shame bhuvi, pankaj singh and aaron will have to sit out for a trundler like pandey.

Posted by afzal501 on (May 28, 2014, 12:43 GMT)

I think india got a good chance of beating England this time, as England are in rebuilding process, and low in confidence.I support Pakistan but I think I will enjoy this series between England and india, India has now got a decent bowling attack if they select them. They will need there fast bowlers in England like shami, yadhuv and show aggression good luck.

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 12:41 GMT)

and where the hell is Umesh yadav? Aaron cannot bowl long spells. He is more suited for ODI's.

With zaheer gone, I finally expected Umesh yadav to get this chances. A strike rate of 46 is no joke.He is a genuine wicket-tacker.

Posted by IndianInnerEdge on (May 28, 2014, 12:40 GMT)

Is this selection based on IPL? No Yadav? really? the only guy who can bowl at 140+.....i just forsee indian bowling to be hit to all parts of the field as in mid summer the pitches will flatten out, and the eng batsmen will really gorge on the indian feast on offer. Stuart Binny - really? all indian assured we are going to be middle to lower ranked teams very soon, get used to staring at first innings scores of the very rare odd flash in the bowling pan or a rare brilliant batting display, going to be a real tough test cricket grind ....cricinfo please publish...

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 12:39 GMT)

Stuart Binny, well done in getting your son selected on this tour with the help of your contacts & power. Have selectors even seen him play First Class cricket? Poor selection!

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 12:39 GMT)

Gambhir,Dhawan, Puji, Kohli, Rohit, Rahane, Dhoni, Ashwin, Bhuvi, Shami, Ishant. The team selection, bowlers etc etc will always be there. I sincerely hope that Dhoni is given 2 tests and only 2 tests and if he still fails to perform as a batsman, please drop him. I know that wont happen but it is high time people accept that it is Dhoni's captaincy and batting(not to mention keeping too) in tests that costs the team a lot. Give Gambhir a go for a couple of matches,if he fails get in Vijay. It is very important to start the series on an attacking note.

Posted by drpramit on (May 28, 2014, 12:38 GMT)

Overall correct selection except for the 1 extra bowler & stuart binny. In the last Eng tour we have seen over fast bowlers struggling with fitness, this time we have picked a fitter team. Zaheer will be missed again, and if u r picking a jumbo squad like this u can pick a leg spinner or may be half fit zaheer ahead of binny & 1 extra seamer.

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 12:38 GMT)

this is the time to pick rishi dhawan as an allrounder. How many times Dhoni has to say that he doesn't have the luxury of a fast bowling allrounder?.

Stuart binny is a joke.He is more like a batsman. Especially in tests, Rishi Dhawan fits the allrounder spot perfectly especially in swing conditions like England

Posted by Chn2 on (May 28, 2014, 12:37 GMT)

Nice 2 see Gambhir back in Indian test squad. He is a proven character and currently in good nick. Runs in Test in England will also help him 2 get back into ODI squad.

Sehwag is much better player than Vijay and Binny at least for Test squad. With this squad India is again on diastrous tour of England. I see Sehwag come back in Indian team after England Tour for Australia. Umesh is also better than Varun Aaron and should be included in Test Team.

Ashwin preferred over Ojha?? that baffles me may be the so-called world beating batting unit needs extra cushion in form of Ashwin nd Jaddu... ojha can't bat that well so he misses out anyways they are going to play just 1 of them so no matter who they pick...

one will also have to feel for someone like Tiwari who couldn't find a place just because of useless Vijay...

Fail to understand Binny's inclusion here. If there was a front runner for a bowling all rounder, it should have been Rishi Dhawan. Fair selection otherwise. Would have liked to see Umesh instead of Pankaj Singh as well

No Umesh Yadav (instead of Pankaj Singh? No Rishi Dhawan (instead of Stuart Binny)? Neither Amit Mishra or Pragyan Ojha? This team looks like a OneDay/ T20 team, not a test team to me. Under what circumstances would you play Stuart or Pankaj?

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 12:28 GMT)

Bhubaneswar Kumar should not have place in the test team. He is a very good bowler, but is also a very weak one. He is a fine prospect for the T20s andODIs, but doesn't have the stamina to bowl 20 overs and day and field for another 70. I think they persisted with him only because of a lack of choices. The day BCCI starts looking that little bit more hrder for good players, Bhuvi will be replaced in tests. I am sure Bhuvi will get injured by the end of this tour. Vijay doesn't deserve to be there, considering the fact that there is Rohit, Rahane, Dhawan, and Gautham as openers. I would have given Raina another chance.

Not a single Leg spinner ????? Only consolation is that India will play in the second half of the summer July onward when the pitches dry up and will grip . The door seems to be finally closed on Zaheer's glittering career....

Shocked to see Staurt Binny's name in both the Test and ODI squad. On form, he is surely not better than Yuvi as seen in IPL and two ODI's that he played this year. Apparently, they did not have much choice but to choose Gambhir as third opener.

Pankaj singh s selection is a very good for indian cricket. After all his great performances, toil in domestic cricket and his outburst against selectors in an interview, he will be very much relieved all fired up to bowl in england. For the first time, indian pace bowling is looking very strong with pankaj, bhuvi, ishwar pandey, aaron, shammi, ishant (atleast on paper)

A glimpse and you know that selectors are worried about the 0-4 loss to England last time around. The team has many bench warmers! 18 is a huge number.

In the main team, Binny doesn't deserve a test spot so soon and neither would he get a game in all likelihood. I sense the selectors have made it dificult for Dhoni by picking Gambhir. He is a player who has to be in eleven if he is in squad. That means either all three openers will play or Dhawan/Vijay will be scapegoat.

Sandeep Sharma would have been a good swing bowler for England. That spot is taken by Shami and Bhuvi, though. Ishant Sharma, Pandey, Aaron Pankaj would fight for the third pacer spot. That is a illogically large pool of pace bowlers.

Pankaj Singh rewarded at last for all his deeds over two years in domestic circuit ... GG scrapes through luckily ... what is Binny doing in a test squad? Zaheer misses out on fitness issues ... well this is all we have got ... hope we at least draw the series ... good luck

For all those who are wondering on Pankaj Singh's selection he has done good enough to earn the call..he has been consistent in the last 5 seasons.

Dhawan must be careful now as there is gambhir now in the squad

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 12:22 GMT)

robin uthappa is not there its quite surprising

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 12:22 GMT)

This is the worst squad ever no sehwag and gambhir given a chance purely dhonis selection one more clean sweep on its way

Young blood touring to England... Never gona be easy for India in English conditions..!!

Posted by fulk on (May 28, 2014, 12:20 GMT)

Good to see Gambhir back in the Indian test team. He has been selected not on the bases of his form but his experience on the english pitches as last year he played around 6-7 county games there

Where is our orange cap holder, Robin Uthappa

This series will effectively decide India's World Cup squad... I hope that the team performs really well! Go India!

Playing XI

Ajinkya Rahane, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujura, Rohit Sharma, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Ravichandra ashwin,Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami/ Ishwar Pandey,Ishant Sharma,Pankaj Singh/ Varun Aaron.

Finally pankaj singh selected! So happy for him. But where is umesh yadav? He was a much better test bowler than varun aaron. Also binny for tests is a very poor selection.

Posted by naren1983 on (May 28, 2014, 12:17 GMT)

Uthappa should been have in. Because he is not only played well in IPL. He had done better performance in Domestic season for Karnataka which helped to win all the major trophies like Ranji, Irani & Vijay Azare. Stuart Binny is real surprise and useless. Aaron & Pankaj selection is not that great...

Posted by android_user on (May 28, 2014, 12:17 GMT)

how does binny fits in this side. Manoj Tiwari would have been my choice

Posted by Naresh28 on (May 28, 2014, 12:17 GMT)

Its good that Pankaj Singh gets a chance this time around, but how did he jump out of the blue. Uthappa should have been there? Binny for tests? Tiwari gets into squad to Bangla but not ENgland - done well in the IPL with limited chances. Ishant Sharma?

Very Very bad selection of bowlers.

How come players like - Sandeep sharma, Rishi Dhawan, who have performed quite well in domestic cricket and can get favorable swing in England are not considered.

Instead old team of fast bowlers have been selected. Sooner or later they will get injured and then we are back to square one.

We all know that Varun arron, pankaj singh, Ishwar pandey will not get to play and until either of the other fast bowlers gets injured they will carry on drinks.

Experience OF PAST it seems does not hold good for selectors, otherwise how could they take so many fast bowlers and get them to sit all through the tour.

How come Gautam Gamdhir has been selected for non performance in domestic circuit or is it that some T20 innings has helped him. strange way of selecting, another 5-0 white wash awaits.

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 12:15 GMT)

No left arm fast bowler?. no variety?.

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 12:15 GMT)

Binny??? why not Rishi dhawan? and come on why not umesh yadav???

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 12:15 GMT)

sehwag should be included in place of vijay.selectors should give him break atleast once, becoz he is an important cog for upcoming world cup.

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 12:14 GMT)

No space for Amit Mishra or Pragyan Ojha, yet a passenger like Stuart Binny makes it to a test squad. Why no Umesh Yadav instead of a bunch of no name bowlers? Talking about recalls, how about Uthappa? (I know this is a test squad but some of the batsmen in the squad have looked very much out of touch)

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 12:12 GMT)

Surprise.. Why Zaheer is out? He was done good in the last session rite?

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 12:12 GMT)

This is again Dhoni's team..... What is Ishant & Vijay doing there ???

Posted by android_user on (May 28, 2014, 12:12 GMT)

why not utapa

Posted by CricketMaan on (May 28, 2014, 12:11 GMT)

Pankaj Singh inspired selection and deserved one! but he is still untested and 130+. Binny may have been picked on his FC performance, but in awful form. Good to see that Aaron not wasted in Bangladesh ODI rather rested and ready for England. So its Shami, Ishant and Bhuvi to lead the attack at Lords. My Frist Test XI - Vijay, Dhawan, Pujara, Kholi, Rohit, Rahane/Jajeda, MSD, Ashwin, Bhuvi, Ishant, Shami

Posted by   on (May 28, 2014, 12:08 GMT)

whats going here. Stuart Binny in the test squad... Selectors Yuvraj Singh would have been the best. And Pankaj Singh instead of Sandeep Sharma???'
