West Indies in India 2013-14 October 31, 2013

Umesh Yadav, Rohit Sharma in India Test squad

ESPNcricinfo staff
395

Rohit Sharma, who is yet to make his Test debut, has made a comeback to the squad selected for the two Tests against West Indies. Ravindra Jadeja missed out because of a shoulder strain, creating an opening for the third spinner that was filled by legspinner Amit Mishra. The surprise, however, was that Zaheer Khan didn't make it to the four-man pace unit, while Ishant Sharma retained his place. Umesh Yadav returned after a back injury had forced him out of the Australia series, and Mohammed Shami was the new inclusion.

After spending the off season training in France and coming back fitter, Zaheer took match hauls of five wickets in successive first-class matches against West Indies A and Haryana. Dropped during the England series last year, Zaheer was expected to make it back into the squad. He has not, but the selectors are still looking at him as a prospect for the South Africa tour.

A source told ESPNcricinfo that the selectors debated whether to bring him back immediately or give him more match time in domestic cricket. The eventual consensus was that he needed more overs under his belt before coming back to Test cricket. "He is very much a part of the plans for South Africa," the source said.

Rohit made his way back into the squad with consistent performances at the top of the order in ODIs, and could even be used as a back-up opener should the need arise. As it stands, he and his Mumbai team-mate Ajinkya Rahane will compete for the middle-order vacancy that arises because of the absence of Jadeja, who has been advised two weeks' rest. Suresh Raina, who was part of the previous Test squad, was dropped.

Harbhajan Singh and Ashok Dinda were also dropped. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the main spinners - R Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha - and other batsmen retained their places. A big matter of debate will be the retention of Ishant, whose results in international cricket have been ordinary of late. To go with the recent hidings in one-day cricket, Ishant last took more than three wickets in a Test innings more than two years ago, at Lord's in July 2011. His overall average of 38 is uninspiring, and since that Lord's Test every wicket he has taken has cost India 60 runs.

Squad: MS Dhoni (capt. & wk), Shikhar Dhawan, M Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, R Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Pragyan Ojha, Amit Mishra, Ajinkya Rahane, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Rohit Sharma, Ishant Sharma.

Nice and balanced team selection. There will always be players favorite to someone and hence criticism is accepted. But people have to differentiate between selection of a Test Team and a ODI Team. While Vijay inclusion is much hated upon here, he has scored heavily in the recent concluded Test Series against Australia.

Also, if one speaks about Rahane...then he has also been given chances but he failed to grasp. Rahane doesn't feel comfortable opening, and exit of Tendulkar has again opened gates for him though he will face stiff competition from Rohit Sharma who also has to prove a lot.

In all sense, number 4 and 6 spot can be seen changing hands for few series unless we get a settled batsmen there. There may/are better players who will get their chance as time progresses as this selection committee is looking for talent and is not only going by reputation.

Team India is definitely going to do well against WI...the wishes are for Abroad Tours especially South Africa. Cheers.

India will miss jadeja for sure in this match, also wil lag the little help with part timers. So he need to have 5 full time bowlers in final squad of 11 - 1)shikhar dhawan 2)Rohit sharma(considering opening form he is in)3)cheteshwar pujara/ajinkya rahane(Rahane may get an axe here) 4)sachin tendulkar 5)virat kohli 6)ms dhoni 7)Ashwin (as dhoni's fav and backup batsman) 8)Amit mishra/Pragyan ojha(high probability it will be mishra as leg spinner) 9)umesh yadav 10)mohd shami 11)B.kumar/ishant sharma( Dhoni can surprise us with Ishant in team)

Here is my guess on who will be picked by the captain/management for the starting 11 in the first test with WI. If they go with 4 bowlers, Rohit will get his test cap. 1) Vijay, 2) Dhawan, 3) Pujara, 4) Tendulkar, 5) Kohli, 6) Rohit, 7) Dhoni, 8) Ashwin, 9) Bhuvi, 10) Yadav 11) Ishant / Shami / Mishra (a tough one to guess on the last bowler spot). If they go with 5 bowlers, in the above lineup Rohit will be on the sideline and two out of Ishant / Shami / Mishra be in the 11. My personal preference as a fan is to see Rohit getting his debut in India and making some runs before going to SA. This test series is also a chance for our team to get into the groove in the classic format before the tougher overseas tours (in addition to of course being a fitting farewell to you know who).

Rohit Sharma should open with shikhar and have Ajinkya rahane as a solid middle/ower order bat. The team should be MSD, Shikhar, Rohit, Pujara, Sachin, virat, rahane, bhuvi, shami, ojha, ashwin... this team should be persisted with for future series as well.

  • on November 3, 2013, 7:22 GMT

Well, Rohit was selected for Test Squad earlier also, but he didnt play. So, I suppose that now, after his solid performance against Australia, he is a strong contender for both the West Indies and South Africa Series. India should retain the same opening combination for the two tests against West Indies and South Africa as well (i.e Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma).

  • ramli on November 2, 2013, 5:58 GMT

Abishek Nayar should have been chosen in place of Jadeja ... it would have given MSD another option of bowling resource ... choosing a batsman in place of Jadeja is going to worsen our bowling problems, even against WI ... WI are not pushovers ... anymore ... we had to grit it out last time

  • ramli on November 2, 2013, 5:55 GMT

Rahane was benched for longtime in ODI because of SRT ... not by MSD ... when finally given chances, he goofed it up in tests and recent ODIs ... AR has to show more consistency to stay on course in this highly comptetive climate ... it is not enough to perform well in domestic and get selected into India team only to goof it up

  • drallion on November 2, 2013, 3:15 GMT

BCCI selectors have done the correct thing in dropping the aging Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh. More specifically Zaheer Khan. Firstly, he is an old horse with limited capability. I have seen him at a couple of matches and he does not stretch himself. Secondly, he is a poor fielder and India cannot afford to have such a serious handicap. If Bret Lee, Anderson, Dale Steyn can dive to stop a boundary, why does not Zaheer? Thirdly, he is a walking wicket, regardless of the status of the match. Again, Lee, Anderson, Steyn can and bravely battle it out to add some runs and more importantly, spend valuable time out there with courage. Zaheer does not. He starts walking back towards the leg umpire even if a medium pacer takes 15 steps to run in to bowl. We must look to the future. Mohd. Shami is a wonderful talent that must be encouraged and nourished at the right time. Remember, how Javagal Srinath had to wait unnecessarily for a long time!! Kudos to the BCCI selectors!

  • Al_Bundy1 on November 1, 2013, 21:06 GMT

I can understand if Selectors are still not convinced of Zaheer's fitness, but why Ishant?? What has he done in last 2 years to deserve a place in Indian team?? Instead of Ishant, Ishwar Pandey and Imtiaz Ahmed deserve a place in the Indian squad. There's no reason to select Ishant Sharma. His bowling has been pathetic, to say the least.

  • on November 1, 2013, 19:14 GMT

Team selection was a gud one.but they made a mistake by nt pickin up the experienced zaheer.Playing an inexperienced bowling lineup wil be a high risk.Hope thy dont do t same mistake against SA

  • Cpt.Meanster on November 1, 2013, 19:04 GMT

@ baskar_guha: Back in 1996, if you remember well enough, 3 youngsters by the names of Laxman, Dravid and Ganguly made their marks. These stalwarts then progressed to become India's middle order pillars for almost 2 decades in test cricket. I have absolutely NO DOUBT that we will unearth the next generation of Indian test batting during this SA tour. Cynics can continue to whine but the fact of the matter is, India have NOTHING to lose. Let SA enjoy their favourites tag. India will sneak up on them and hit em when they least expect it.

  • baskar_guha on November 1, 2013, 18:39 GMT

The scary part to me is that many in this team will go to South Africa based on their performances against a weaker side. We will find out in South Africa which of these players are good enough likely at the expense of a whipping or two.

  • razbabu on November 1, 2013, 17:52 GMT

Lets leave batting order..we are a very good batting team... Why not Zaheer for WI tour and SA tour..He is fit and taking wickets in Ranji...He is far better bowler than anyone in the current bowling lineup

  • KingofSwag on November 1, 2013, 16:36 GMT

I honestly do not agree with the decision to drop Suresh Raina, I feel that he should be given more of a chance in test cricket whilst batting on pitches that are going to get him runs. Dinesh Karthik has also done enough to make himself a strong candidate for this series and in my opinion, he has been harshly overlooked. Vijay may be doing well outside of 1st team cricket, however, I do not feel he merits a place in this squad for the basis of many previous experiences. Ajinkya Rahane is a maybe but as to whether I would rather have him or Rohit in the squad, I would take Rohit for the pure fact that he has International experience, although I do think that Rahane should be included in the team for the NZ series. Ideal squad: Dhoni, Dhawan, SRT, Rohit, Raina, Virat, Pujara, Umesh, Shami, Zaheer, Ashwin, Ojha, Bhuvi, Aaron (not sure of his situation), Rahane, Viru, Gauti and as an extra man in case of injury, Mohit Sharma.

  • on November 1, 2013, 16:34 GMT

Would like to see Rahane/Vijay open with Dhawan. Rohit/Kohli should take 4/5 (after Tendulkar's farewell). Kohli was a completely different player after his test century in Australia. I see the same thing happening to a couple of batsmen after SA tour.

  • bhushanB on November 1, 2013, 16:05 GMT

Rahane should be given a long rope and the captain needs to show some confidence in him.... Look at how long Rohit took to make some runs - what 6 yrs and 80+ ODis... and you bench Rahane for few years and decide his fate on his performance in one or two tests...?

If you do not want him in the playing X1, at least do not bench him Dhoni.. Let him go and entertain the ranjis.

  • on November 1, 2013, 15:42 GMT

Recommended 11 - Dhawan, R Sharma, Pujara, Tendulkar, Kohli, Dhoni, Ashwin, Bhuvi, Ojha / Mishra Shami, Yadav / Ishant Rohit has done enough recently to merit a chance in the test playing 11, if not I would have recommended Rahane.

  • armchairjohnny on November 1, 2013, 15:41 GMT

I agree with @vnott. Dinesh Karthik certainly merited a place in the squad. Without his versatility (able to keep + good temperament + steely batting ability overseas) the batting looks horribly unbalanced. As expected, the bowling department looks woefully inept. Hard to see how the bowlers will be able to dismiss the West Indian batsmen at all, especially with such a spin-centric attack. I still find it sickening that Ishant still manages to get in the side at all. I predict Yadav and Shami will be cannon fodder for the WI batsmen and the spinners will do nothing. Expect scores of 500+ from WI and the Indian bowlers not even to dismiss them once for a score of less than 400. Rahane must be kept away from the playing XI, he doesn't have the temperament or the technique to handle International-standard test bowling.

  • on November 1, 2013, 15:29 GMT

Selecting dis team which continues to feature ishant sharma who depite of turning from a youn talent into a seasoned pro inspite of his continuous failures is sending a very bad signal to the other toung crops of fast bowling dat they r very far from getting a call.A bowler who cant throw 1 yorker in i over is xpected 2 rock d opposition batting, its totally unfair on ishant sharma who is trying his best 2 overcome his laziness of bowling full and on different length rather den gluing to back of the good length sponsored by his height. Many promising young talents are being wasted in domestic circuit like sandip sharma, imtiyaz amhed and many other on d fringes.

  • Speng on November 1, 2013, 15:27 GMT

India have no batting problems except perhaps inexperience. If I'm not mistaken once Sachin retires Dhoni will be the only one with more than 20 tests. BUT that's not a huge problem with all this talent I think. Even when Sachin is gone India will still have guys sitting on the bench who could play for anybody else. It doesn't hurt that Ashwin and Jadeja (when he comes back on the squad) are not tailenders so they could afford to pick teams with 5 bowlers (e.g. 2 spinners and 3 pacers) and still be confident of scoring good runs even against South Africa. Against the West Indies that is certainly what I'd do.

  • GRVJPR on November 1, 2013, 14:48 GMT

Now people will realize what a good job Jadeja does with he ball. Ravi Ashwin is the worst off spinner India has ever produced. Crumble under pressure every time.

  • dailycric on November 1, 2013, 14:18 GMT

@SamRoy: the game against SA A when rahane made 86: no good batsmen in our line-up? we had pujara, vijay, karthik and rayudu. vijay has superseded rahane as test opener (and made 4 and 0), karthik and rayudu jumped ahead of him in the ODI side. no good SA bowlers? then why did we get bowled out for 185 and 201, with only rahane and saha standing firm? saha not a good batsman? then why was he the only batsman other than kohli who looked comfortable against the aussies in adelaide? yes, rahane failed in the delhi test - but he got that chance after sitting all season on the bench. you don't judge someone based on one game. like you, i judge batsmen by how they do in bowler-friendly conditions - and rahane has proven himself around the world, incl in australia. juneja is a promising bat and worth watching - but he has played only 13 first-class games. rahane has excelled for years. the real mistake is selecting vijay ahead of rahane as opener. vijay has never succeeded outside india.

  • on November 1, 2013, 14:10 GMT

I was hoping that the two "festival tests" we have arranged to honour SRT, with the last minute consent from the West Indians, would have been used as trial tests for selection to South Africa. So, will be the case with the NZ tour later. And, those who succeed in South Africa & NZ can be considered for the England Tour.

Thus, it would have been a two step selection process (WI series as the 1st step, before the SA tour; and SA & NZ as the 2nd step before the England Tour.)

By the time, we finish the 5-test series in England, we should have a clear idea about our India Test Team, for at least the next 5 years.

  • ramli on November 1, 2013, 13:51 GMT

  • team_india_no1 on November 1, 2013, 13:35 GMT

I would be happy if any 11 within this squad play except Ishant Sharma. This is the worst that can happen to the team as well as Ishant's career i.e., continuous play without any time for introspection. But i am sure he is going to play in the 11. Dhoni is a very cool, shrewd, honest and humble captain but he is very very stubborn as well.

  • Al_Bundy1 on November 1, 2013, 13:20 GMT

Big mistake by selectors to include Ishant in the Indian squad. Instead of Ishant, they should give a chance to 2 promising young bowlers - Ishwar Pandey and Imtiaz Ahmed. Ishwar has been the most successful pace bowler in Ranji Trophy for last 2 years, and Imtiaz has good pace and swing. He just took 5 wickets against West Indies on a flat wicket. When was the last time Ishant took a 5 wicket haul? He could not even take a total of 5 wickets in a 4 test series played in Australia and England - the most friendly places for pace bowlers.

I am a fan of both Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane. I think both of them are made for Test cricket and should be in the playing 11. But as it stands now, there is only one vacancy. So there will be a toss-up between my two favourite players. What a pity! But I hope Rahane gets chance to play ahead of Rohit, mainly because I think he has been a bit unfairly treated by selectors as well as the team management. It must have been frustrating for Rahane to be on the fringe for so long. Once Tendulkar retires, I hope both Rohit and Rahane are in the playing 11 for South Africa Tests. Good luck to both!

  • TRAM on November 1, 2013, 12:44 GMT

Cant believe they are still talking about Zaheer. What about his fielding? Aren't the selectors looking for young India?

A batsman who scores a 50, if he drops a catch in his fielding, has a zero value for the team. Similarly a bowler like Zaheer, even if he takes those one or two left handers (only) wickets, is a zero value for the team.

  • CricketMaan on November 1, 2013, 11:57 GMT

I can understand the furstration behind Vijay selection from his haters!! but then if we have to go by performance at international level, Vijay has grabbed his attention on recent performance, the same yard stick that is applied to Dhawan. Rahane is unfortunate, but the fact is he does not open for Mumbai and has been earmarked for middle order. Vijay has to be given a go at top level in SA and if fails, then see for options, but he is always going to have 2 of 4 innings that he may fail. Afteralll there aren't many that succeed against Dale, Morke, Phil in SA. On another note, Ishant if in the XI should have been allowed to have at least 1 red ball game prior to test, which now seems impossible!!!

  • Sheela on November 1, 2013, 11:14 GMT

Rohit Sharma, if included in the playing eleven should be fitted at most suitable place in the batting order. A few seasons back another player not an usual opener was made to open and on his failure, another player was selected based on parochial opinions of commentators. In Tests, aim of opposition is taking wickets unlike limited over matches where containment is name of the game and this vital differene shouldbe borne in mind.

How in the world can Ishanth be in the squad ? Unbelievable.!!!. The longest rope ever manufactured on earth has been given to him by the selectors :-)

  • BHANUDEV on November 1, 2013, 9:48 GMT

I Think it's right to take umesh back into the team. But rahane should play in place of raina

  • AnoMaLy on November 1, 2013, 8:18 GMT

My XI for the first test - Rohit & Dhawan as openers, Pujara, Tendulkar, Kohli, MS, Ashwin, Ojha,Mishra, Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar

For the second test, I would drop one of the spinners and pick one out of Shami & Ishant Sharma[Mumbai being more pacey]

  • LovedFansofIndianCricket on November 1, 2013, 8:09 GMT

For this series don't play Vijay. Play Pujara as opener o he can play new ball and this experience can helpful for him in SA condition if we loast opener early. Play Ajinkya or Rohit in number three so that they can get experience. This will useful in SA in Sachin's absence. Play Shami and Buvi instead of Ishanth. Mishra, Ashwin and Ojha should be XI.

  • ankush_123 on November 1, 2013, 7:47 GMT

i think india didn't play with ashwin and raina for west indies series they are not inform and if any player is not inform dhoni let him out of the team so why is he playing with these players ? i think dhoni should not have a personal relation with ashwin and raina he should think for indian team point of view if they both are not inform why are they playing , i think dhoni should come back with zaheer and harbhajan , now india hava a lack in bowling these players can help because they have experience they can maintain pressure , but i think dhoni should not have their personal relationship in indian team they both raina and ashwin must be out from indain team they need rest

  • on November 1, 2013, 7:36 GMT

People discussing about the team is good or bad... giving possible changes and all... guys, this series is all about Sachin Tendulkar... doesn't matter what other ten people you put in the sqaud. So just bask into the glorious last two tests of the GOD..!!

  • ashy2win on November 1, 2013, 7:06 GMT

Shami is the better option than Ishant. Jadeja may be rested. Its not bothered. But Shami should be in both the Test as well as ODI Squad inspite of Ishant's poor performance

  • on November 1, 2013, 6:41 GMT

As of now, I can be absolutely sure about only two players, in addition to Dhoni: Pujara & Kohli.

For Tests Pujara is the ideal replacement for Rahul Dravid at No. 3. And, Kohli will be the "next master" at No.4 in place of Sachin.

For ODI, Pujara & Kohli should be promted by one rung. Pujara, instead coming at one down in tests, should open with Dhawan. Kohli should go up from No.4 to No.3. in ODIs , as he is doing now.

Rohit Sharma should be given a chance at No.4 in ODIs & No.5 in Tests, if he maintains the current form.

None of those, whom we tried at No. 6 has proved that he can survive the bouncer barrage on fast paced pitches in England, Australia, or South Africa. Or, in New Zealand, even with theer current pacers.

Everyone else is suspect; except Ishant Sharma, whose ase is clear (He should have been replaced by an experienced guide for the pacers in the playing XI like Zak, or another youngster who merits a chance -- there are many of them, like Mohit Sharma

  • Vivian_Richard on November 1, 2013, 6:39 GMT

Rohit Sharma has earned his place in the test squad after a string of good scores in ODIs. Why he wasn't given a place in the test squad in the first place, despite his good first class record, is anybody's guess. Zaheer very rightly hasn't been called back to the squad. He will be needed more in South Africa than on Indian pitches where Ashwin, Ojha, and Amit are expected to take most of the wickets in the WI lineup. The time off should help him increase his workload and become fit for international matches.

6 out of the 7 batsmen are expected to play, unless Dhoni goes in with 5 bowlers. Which wouldn't be such a bad idea because Ashwin and Bhuvi are good lower order bats coming in at 7 and 8 with Umesh, Ojha, and Shami to follow. Jadeja's absence from the squad is good for Ojha, who should get a look ino

  • on November 1, 2013, 6:30 GMT

Mohit Sharma should have been given a go before SA tour. Zak's a great bowler but understand his exclusion. Better to have a team which can play together for the next 6 years or so. Also, firmly believe Irfan derseved another chance. In form, he could be an asset on overseas tours. Ideal test XI : Dhawan, Vijay/Gambhir, Pujara, Sachin (to be repl by Kohli next series), Kohli (repl by Rohit next series), Rohit/Irfan, Dhoni, Ashwin, Piyush Chawla(only genuine leggie)/ Mohit Sharma, Bhuvi/Shami, Umesh.

  • TheOnlyEmperor on November 1, 2013, 6:30 GMT

After Sachin's retirement.... It's time Rohit is moulded as an opener along with Shikar. Pujara, Kohli, Raina and Rahane should be the other batsmen along with Dhoni. Of the 4 bowlers, 2 should be spin and 2 pace. The spinners need to be Ashwin and Ojha. The pacers should be those who can swing the ball. Bhuvaneswar and perhaps Umesh (because he has genuine pace). The spinners should be able to bowl 25 overs/day and the pacers 15 overs/day. The balance 10 overs should be split between Kohli, Raina and Rohit. This consistent Test match bowling practice may be useful when it comes to utilising them in ODIs in case of need. Vijay has a poor batting temperament and on his own cannot define a match. He performed well in India against Aus only because Pujara at the other end was spearheading the batting. Raina has plenty of potential and he needs to be given more and consistent Test exposure. Raina has always been used as a crisis go-to man in ODIs and that has harmed his Test career.

  • on November 1, 2013, 5:10 GMT

Where is Indian test bowling heading, one has to answer that because there is no bench strength left as far as fast bowling is concerned. Zaheer should have been best utilized of what ever cricket is left in him,the focus should be on the bench which is null as of now.Batting looks a bit ok but Indian cricket is going no where as always when it comes to pace. It has become a perennial problem for Indian pacers that existed even two decades back in the 80s, when exciting fast bowlers like Chetan Sharma, Vivek Razdan, Atul Wassan, Salil Ankola, Subroto Banerjee followed by the likes of Dodda Ganesh, Paras Mhambrey, Abey Kuruvilla, Debashis Mohanty, Harvinder Singh & David Johnson amongst others in the 90s showed promise but faded away soon in the haze of Delhi's December.

  • himanshu.team on November 1, 2013, 4:52 GMT

This is good selection and the panel has done a pretty good job since it was formed. I too agree that Zaheer needs to get more domestic matches udner his belt. Even if he has come back fitter from France, it remains to be seen if he can remain fit for an entire international season. India play a lot of matches and even if Zaheer plays only the test matches, he should prove that he is capable of bowling long spells day in and day out. As for Ishant, an average or below average performance here could see him getting the axe for SA. The batting is India's strength and dropping Raina and Yuvraj is the right decision. They must focus only on limited overs. Rohit Sharma and Rahane are fitting replacements. Only person I am worried about if Murali Vijay. He may do well in Indian conditions, but I am not so sure about SA. But overall a strong balanced side and India should win 2-0

  • satzzz on November 1, 2013, 4:51 GMT

Good selection. The batting line up is well settled with Shikar and Vijay recently proved there mettle in the oz series followed by Pujara, The God(for the final time though :( ), Virat and Dhoni himself. One real challenge Dhoni have in this selecting playing 11 is the 5th bowler(no7). He admitted that 5th bowler in the form of Jadeja helped him a lot to maintain consistent pressure throughout the match. Ashwin is decent enough batter to play in no7 position. With the batting ability of Mishra(if included), Bhuvi and Ishant(holding the crease is a very decent prospect for a no10) India can surely accommodate an extra bowler.

Many complained that Jadeja was there in the test team without earning his spot. But we are already able to feel the impact that he had created. It is gonna be an important Ranji season for someone like Aparajith. India surely need couple of genuine all rounders, be it pacers or spinners. If we are able to get them on board we can surely get back to no1 spot.

@Shikar sharma.. very well put.. but who's the captain in your playing eleven, since Dhoni din't make it in to the team??

  • IndianSRTfan on November 1, 2013, 4:15 GMT

Contd...If Rohit's gonna be India's opener for overseas tours, it makes little sense to play him in this series as a no.6 and then shift him again to the opening position in SA. As I'm sure Kohli will move up to no.4 after Sachin's retirement, is Rohit gonna be India's new no.5 with Dhoni at 6 and Jadeja at 7? If yes he should play in this series as a no.6 but if he's gonna be Vijay's replacement overseas, Rahane deserves another chance.

But the good news is, at least in batting, the problem seems to be that of plenty rather than the other way around. Selection of bowlers is still baffling. Is Zak being saved for SA series? Why Ishant again given that he's in terrible form? In a bowling lineup comprising of two pacers and two spinners Ishant shouldn't feature at all. Not when Yadav and Shami are waiting in the wings. New bowlers like Mohit Sharma and Ishwar Pandey deserve to be given a chance to be in that dressing room at least if not playing XI.

Anyways GL Team India. Make it 2-0.

  • 777aditya on November 1, 2013, 4:10 GMT

Zak should have been back in place of the overkill of unlucky Ishant beSharma. Judging by Dhoni's team selections of late, I think this will be the probable playing 11 for the first test: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Murali Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Pragyan Ojha, Shami Ahmed, Rohit Sharma

  • IndianSRTfan on November 1, 2013, 3:56 GMT

Interesting squad. For this series, this is a balanced squad and should do the job but if we think about this series as a prep for the upcoming SA and other overseas tours, some things need to looked at again.

No Jadeja means India will definitely go in with two pacers and two spinners in this series. But the bowling attack in SA will surely have three pacers, one spinner and Jadeja as the fifth bowler. Zaheer is not selected here, so is he being saved or not in the reckoning for the SA tour anymore? In latter case, only B. Kumar will be a certainty in that bowling lineup in SA, with other two places being up for grabs. If that is the situation, ideally they should have given Bhuvi rest too so that both Shami and Yadav could be tested in this series. Ishant needs to be dropped to play in Ranji

In batting people are shouting for Rohit over Vijay, but he's performed against the Aussies so he can't be dropped. Question is where does Vijay fit in India's plans for overseas tours. Contd..

  • Criticalthinking on November 1, 2013, 3:47 GMT

I don't why people are questioning Murali Vijay's position. He has scored more than 400 runs in the previous Aussie series. That's clearly answering why he is in the test squad. I don't understand some fans, they criticize that based on IPL performances we shouldn't give chances in national team. Then how come you can consider his IPL form into test side??? Ridiculous people :). Then why we are having Sachin in the team (How much he scored in the IPL, Champions trophy, last 10 test matches). So shall we ask the selectors to get rid off Sachin then ridiculous again :). Rahane position should be questioned first. Why he is there. Just performing for Rajasthan royals can we include him in the squad. Rahane is no of use, he don't know to play with big teams.

  • on November 1, 2013, 3:24 GMT

Zaheer Khan is the best Indian Test Bowler since retirement of Legend Anil Kumble. Now as he is completely fit and in form negligence of him can increase the chaos in already worst Indian Bowling attack.

  • CherryWood_Champion on November 1, 2013, 3:10 GMT

@ Shikhar Sharma --- And where exactly does Mr Captain cool .. MSD fit in your team -- 12`th man ;)

  • on November 1, 2013, 2:57 GMT

With Bhuvaneshwar Kumar and Umesh Yadav in the side one being the best swing bowler we have and the other the best pacer, does Ishant Sharma stand a chance at all to be in the starting line up who can neither swing like Kumar nor has the pace of Yadav? For backup Mohammed Shami is in the side, so Ishant should have been let go so he can slog in the domestic cricket to fight his way back into the Indian team, if he has any desire left to succeed after 6 years of unproductive stint in the Indian team. Unless Zaheer Khan breaks down with fitness issues again he appears to be a certainty for South Africa and NewZealand tours.

Good to see the selectors trying out Rohit Sharma and Rahane in this series, but Sehwag should be picked for South Africa series.

  • Al_Bundy1 on November 1, 2013, 1:58 GMT

What has Ishant Sharma done to get a spot in the Indian squad. This so-called pace spearhead has an average of 53 in last 2 years. He won't find a place even in Bangladesh or Zimbabwe team. Selectors should have tried a youngster like Ishwar Pandey or Mohit Sharma.

Dhoni is always afraid of good players like Gambhir, Kohli to steal his captaincy!!! If he is not a captain, he can hardly get chance to get in of playing 11, he may probably 12th man to serve drink!

  • gauravm5 on October 31, 2013, 22:03 GMT

The funniest thing about world's richest cricketing body is their country's bowling spearhead who bowls at 130-132 km/h & that too with cross and scrambled seam. Also, that bowling spearhead is coaching the young bowlers of a state which produced batsmen like Sehwag, Gambhir, Dhawan and Kohli. I am talking about Ishant sharma who runs a coaching academy in Delhi where he himself gives bowling tips of young delhi bowlers dreaming to play cricket for their country and make their name in the International cricket arena.

  • on October 31, 2013, 22:01 GMT

I am not a selector, so I won't comment on whether Zaheer should be in our out. However, Umesh has been out for a long time as well owing to his injury. So if he can get in without too much domestic matches under his belt, why is Zaheer being asked to play more domestic matches before he can be considered?

  • ladycricfan on October 31, 2013, 21:56 GMT

Selectors can select only 15 players. Instead of wondering why certain players were not selected, fans have to appreciate why the 15 were selected.

Dhawan: fastest century maker in the test history. Is in excellent form at the moment.

Vijay: highest run scorer this year v Aus with two 150+ scores.

    Pujara: doesn't need any description

    SRT: ...........

    Kohli:born to replace Sachin

Rahane: very good FC average. Is in good form

Rohit: very good FC average. Recent form in odi is good

    Dhoni: captain cool

Ashwin: highest wicket taker, man of the series v Aus.

Ojha:best performer after Ashwin and Jadeja recently in tests.

Mishra: best leg spinner in india

    Ishant: experinced, fit, hard worker.

Bhuvi: best swing bowler in india, young and fit

Shami: as Dhoni said he is deceptively quick and performed well in the ODIs against Aus and impressed the selectors

    Yadav: genuine fast bowler.

Stats prove R.Ashwin is the best spinner in the AUS vs IND ODI Series.Yes he is one of the leading wicket takers in the series and the only spinner to do so.This seriously reflects the pathetic bowling conditions,no swing,no turn,no reverse swing,no extra fielder, not a single helping hand for bowlers and we expect them to pick wickets, control the run flow and make miracles on the highway pitches.Common guys give them a break. Its really a good idea from MSD to place bowling machines instead of bowlers.

  • on October 31, 2013, 20:19 GMT

The idea of Zaheer out of the squad has its ups and downs. Ishant should not be here because of the preformance he has made in the last few matches. He has not been an efficient bowler in test cricket and does not take wickets at a regular pace. He needs to improve his bowling in the nets. Umesh Yadav is quick but not accurate. Shami is the best quick bowler in the side at the moment that takes wickets and quick. Zaheer is not great in the Indian conditions, but needs practice before South Africa. I say he should go with India A or something and improve his oversees bowling. Rohit is most probaly going to replace Sachin and I encourage him to do so. Other than that I say this is a desent Indian team. Jadeja being rested is a good option because of the amount of cricket he has been playing. My squad: 1.Dhawan 2.Vijay 3.Pujara 4.Sachin Tendulkar 5.Rohit 6.Virat 7.Ashwin 8.Shami 9.Kumar 10.Mishra 11.Ojha

what has ishant sharma done for getting selected regularily?nd there is nothing spl about ajinkya rahane.he has got too many weakness.last time i saw him playing test match and found his attitude not fit for test game.better reward some youngsters like baba aparajith so he can be a future prospect.for making a strong team its not only important to focus on playing 11 but others selected too get chance to learn a lot,so better some young good ranji performing players should be given chance so future would turn to be good in favour of india.indian selectors should learn from englad selectors.compared to englands test batsmen indians dont stand any where.indian team relies heavily on kohli,if seen only 4 good batsmen in test team shikar dhawan, cheteshvar pujara, kohli,nd rohit.on d otherhand all the playing 6 batsmen in team r not only good bt masterclass.root,cook,bell,trott,peterson,bairstow.hope msd and selectors do some serious work for betterment of indian test team.

  • arup_g on October 31, 2013, 19:41 GMT

Looks a nicely balanced sqaud, but a shame to see Jadeja rested only because he still has to prove himself as a batsman. I would love to see him bat at 7 and be the all rounder India have been craving for since Kapil Dev retired!

The obvious dilemma is who bats at 6, but I hope Rohit gets his chance. All the talk is about him batting at 4 when Tendulkar retires, but I do not think anyone can just 'walk' into that position. Give Rohit a chance at 6, and let him prove his place first!

Bowling wise I hope Ishant is not selected! He is the weak link in India's bowling regardless of the format. Bhuvi and Yadav provide a great combination - Bhuvi with the swing and accuracy and Yadav with pace and bounce. The two spinners should be Ashwin and Ojha. Mishra is not test standard in my opinion.

My XI - Dhawan, Vijay, Pujara, Tendulkar, Kohli, Rohit, Dhoni, Ashwin, Yadav, Bhuvi and Ojha.

It may be India's habit of selecting 15 or 16 member squad for home serious, but i really feel its not method!! Since the domestic season already started it's wise to select 12 member squad and let remaining 2 or 3 players to play in Ranji Trophy. This is surely gonna make them sit idle for whole day and few practice during morning and evening will not give any purpose!!

Strange majority of fans prefering some players but I don't know the reason

These are the pets of fans 1.Amith Mishra , for me he is good in the IPL level and good against lesser teams like Zimbabwe but when he get opportunity to play higher lever he is a big tragedy 2.Ajinkhya Rahane , no doubt he is having the class when in full flow, but his body language against top teams are pathetic, he should be more agressive 3.Iswar pandey , with his strong body he should bowl atleast 140 clicks but he is bowling 125 maximum! He is getting wickets in domestic level but i don't think he will be a good bowling option

And fans hate some players 1.Murali Vijay they are not considering that he was the highest scorer in the last test series 2.Rohith Shrama , thery argument is this he got lot of opportunities but the fact is he never got an opportunity is test!

Unfortunately they're not in the team becoz of internal politics in between team management, Instead of retaining Ishant rathet they should opt for experienced front line pace bowler Zaheer, So that there would be some kind of spicy in Indian team.I hope the selectors would rethink & do the needful to have a strong Team India facing any nation in the world. Ishant is a work horse. Ishant can bowl 20 odd overs in a spell and that makes him a captains delight ! Zaheer is prone to injuries these days and saving him for shorter format makes sense. Good and wise team selection.

Zaheer Khan is history - Selectors are right in looking at new faces- beswides five for is is in a match not in an innings - so nothing to shout about.. He also have to prove his fitness - he is known to hide injuries.. Ishant is a good selection- He cant be dropped from test on the basis of his performance in one day cricket- besides his injuries have prevented him from performing to his potential- he needs just one good match to make him a star- And selectors should also give chances to young fast - not medium pace bowlers ..

Where is strong batting performance from Rohit in ODI. ooh that dead flat pitches. 4 hundreds in 110 ODIs. OOOh. Dhawan already did in less than 30 ODIs. Investing in Rohit is waste, Guys remember DK is the one pushed RG out of ODI middle order and RG don't have any option than performing in top. But DK is out for Yuvi who is over rated by seeing one T20 performance. Don't think that last WC performance is enough to survive for 10 years. RG willl perform only when his place in question. otherwise he is lazy. Bu he has skills, no doubt about it. If RG goes, Raina comes back, if Raina goes out RG come back. but others have to suffer.

Who will be axed from 15 for playing eleven? Vijay, Ashwin & Ishant are sure to be of those possible 4 players but MS is persisting with all of them. The reason would be known to himself only. But these 3 should not be part of playing eleven as they are going through worst form right now. They were waste of time then & they are waste of time now. I would like to choose with 5 bowlers keeping Rahane out as forth omission. 6 batsmen & 5 bowlers would ideal format for Test. If selectors chooses 12 or 13 as like ENG/AUS do, it will be best for team management to go ahead with positive framework. I am seriously pleading selectors for breaking this tradition of choosing 15 for home series as nothing can achieved than more confusions.

  • srikanth.v on October 31, 2013, 17:14 GMT

Not a bad selection at all. No point in rushing Zak to 2 dust bowls on is come back. Imagine him firing all cylinders at Durban or Jo'burg, on a good pitch. Not to forget what happened in England in his absence!

  • on October 31, 2013, 17:08 GMT

I just love my team India, which ever the squad may be!!

  • on October 31, 2013, 17:01 GMT

Funny thing perception. Murali Vijay scores tons (literally) of runs & is the top-scorer in the last Test series India plays, that too against a top-tier team like Australia. Yet his place in the team is questioned. Ppl don't even think of asking why Rohit Sharma is in the team, or whether there is even any opening in the middle order.

  • on October 31, 2013, 16:59 GMT

If the selectors are so fond of having Ishant Sharma in the team, why just one Sharm Ha!; I can give them a whole Sharma team!

    1. Rohit Sharma, 2. Ishant Sharma, 3. Joginder Sharma, 4. Rahul Sharma, 5. Mohit Sharma, 6. Sandeep Sharma (1), 7. Ravikant Shrma. 8. Ankit Sharma, 9. Bipul Sharma, 10. Manish Sharma & 11. Aninash Sharma of Bihar as the wicket keeper! 12. Karn Sharma of Railways be the 12th man. Chetan Sharma could be the coach! Charu Sharma will be spokesman-cum-Manager. For gender equality, we could include Ms Bharti Sharma from the India Women's team, as substitute Keeper. If I have missed any, please forgive me; and just add the missing name/s. We can add more players in the touring party. BCCI have the money, No?

  • on October 31, 2013, 16:52 GMT

why zak not in squad ???? why ishan sharma in this squad big mistake

  • ramz30380 on October 31, 2013, 16:45 GMT

I cant see why people are criticizing Vijay's selection here? Just to remind our friends here, he scored 430 runs with two 150+ scores in the Ind - Aus series. Was the highest run scorer in that series. Cant believe how people forget things that easy!

Overall good selection except for Ishant Sharma. Rohit and Rahane both deserve to play, but I have a feeling that Rohit will be prefered to Rahane though. Ishant doesnt deserve a place in any international side for the kind of form he is in right now! Zak needs to be ready for the SA tour and hence it is good to have rested him for this series. Lets see how Mishy performs - hopefully he will get a game!

This series will be all about the little master, so little relevance about anyone else. No matter who is selected in the playing XI, they should strive at giving him the perfect farewell party - win it for him!

  • Naikan on October 31, 2013, 16:43 GMT

With Sachin's impending departure, will close the chapter on a great batting line up. Over these 2 years, the selectors turned over many a stone to get the right batsmen in. However they seem to be blind sided when it comes to picking bowlers. Having a super batting line up has been India's methodology. While good for the shorter game it failed for the tests considering our record over last two years. The longer version of the game takes toll on the batting line up if the bowling is weak. However test cricket seems to be the last thing on the mind of Indian Cricket admin. Thus Ishant with a bowling average of 58 over 13 tests in the last 2 years coolly makes it in. Is the visual impression of a tall body with long hair overwhelming the selector's psyche? While I hear many claims of Ishant being an unlucky bowler, I am sure any other player would not mind having half that luck he has in selection.

  • TIGER_THE_KILLER on October 31, 2013, 16:39 GMT

  • on October 31, 2013, 16:38 GMT

in Indian conditions we could consider Ashwin as allrounder and can select 3 fast bowlers ,,shami, Umesh and bhuvi

  • Temuzin on October 31, 2013, 16:35 GMT

Good decision to rest Jadeja. He has been playing continuously and needed much deserved rest. He will be fresh for SA. In the mean time he should analyze SA batting and bowling and prepare some game plan for it.

Bad decision to include Ishant Sharma. Its really baffling how a bowler with such a dismal record gets selected every time, Pankaj Singh should have been given a chance or Zaheer Khan. I guess selectors considering his age and injury/fitness situationare keeping Zaheer for SA tour. My guess is Ishant will not be a part of SA. Zaheer will be back so will be jadeja.

  • on October 31, 2013, 16:32 GMT

I am not getting the intentions of seletors, they should select team by keeping an eye for SA tour. The upcoming test series is not only a farewell ceremony for sachin.I think Zak is ready to back into international cricket. Selection of ishant is making no sense.

  • Savvy-Cricket-Analyst on October 31, 2013, 16:17 GMT

Overall, a good team selection, though question marks remain on capabilities of two players - Murali Vijay & Ishant Sharma. BCCI should also look at a long term perspective, taking into consideration the upcoming "away-tours" to South Africa, Australia & England. Next World Cup in 2015 will be in Australia & New Zealand. Keeping an eye on conditions of wickets in those countries, the Selectors must prepare a list of talented upcoming players and give them chances - Sanju Samson, Ishwar Pandey, Mohit Sharma, Baba Aparajith, etc. Moreover, BCCI is the richest Cricket Board in the world...it should use its resources to build & maintain lively & pace-friendly wickets to nurture bowling talents, which can be used in the upcoming tours abroad where conditions support seam & swing more. The current condition of dead wickets is really pathetic. On these pitches, India might win. But once tour abroad, our Cricketers would find themselves in alien and hostile conditions they are not used to.

  • Iceman29 on October 31, 2013, 16:13 GMT

For God sakes why are the selectors treating Zak like this...cant even imagine after the beating Ishant got from the Aussies this guy is still picked in the squad...How is Ishant sharma better than Zak...

  • hnakris on October 31, 2013, 16:11 GMT

4 pace bowlers in the team is just too much. India will atmost play 2 pacers in the match (or even 1). Any one pacer can be replaced for one more opener (probably Gambhir), even though Dhawan and Vijay might get in to the playing XI. Mishra and Rohit both are good selections, but Rahane should make the cut into the team for middle order.

  • Cyril_Knight on October 31, 2013, 16:10 GMT

India don't need Zaheer to thrash Windies so there is no point in risking his frail body.

Surely this is Ishant's last chance, if he can't shine against such weak opposition then he will be dropped. The selectors are hardly going to say that publicly, are they?

The series will be all about Tendulkar anyway, nothing else will be remembered unless truly remarkable.

  • Ajay_999 on October 31, 2013, 16:03 GMT

India LOOKS a batsman short, with jadeja out, but doesnt make a difference as ashwin is a better bet than jadeja with the bat in tests. Considering this, my team wud be dhawan, vijay/rahane, pujara, 10dulkar, kohli, dhoni, ashwin, bk, mishra, yadav, shami...mishra cause he has more variations and a lil better at batting than ojha.

  • StarHawk on October 31, 2013, 16:03 GMT

I don't understand why people are questioning Murali Vijay's inclusion in the test team. He is India's leading run scorer in test matches in 2013. In 4 matches, he's scored 430 runs at an average of 61 (2 100s and 1 50). Please check his stats before you jump the gun on Vijay. Let's not use his CLT20 performance to judge his inclusion. Test cricket is different from T20.

  • SamRoy on October 31, 2013, 16:02 GMT

@dailycric That 86 he made did not have any good batsman from India except him and Pujara and Pujara was run out. And moreover in that match SA A had only 1 good bowler Hendricks and Saha (whose batting is worse than Ashwin's) too made an unbeaten 77. Any batsman can score runs in emerging player's tournament, it does not matter. He was troubled too much by Finn and he was bowled repeatedly with a huge gap between his bat and pad (sign of a iffy defence) in at least a couple of the England vs India ODIs held in India. Secondly, he didn't combat spin well enough on that square turner in Kotla on his test debut. Rahane is good but not good enough. Manprit Juneja combated two fine spinners Miller and Permaul (far better than Lyon and Maxwell) brilliantly on a similar pitch in Mysore. This is how I judge batsman, not by how much they make on flat pitches in IPL but how well they bat on square-turners against quality spinners or seaming wickets againsts quality fast bowlers.

  • on October 31, 2013, 15:43 GMT

  • InnocentGuy on October 31, 2013, 15:31 GMT

Happy to see some youngsters finally getting a look-in at least. Vijay and Ishant are probably walking on a wire right now, this should be their last chance for a while at least. I'd think that Zaheer could be brought in as a backup should any of these bowlers were to get injured or perform really badly. So I would say this is a decent squad.

  • on October 31, 2013, 15:29 GMT

now that there is a space left open in the place of JADEJA, rahane should get a go ahead of Rohit....rahane has been in the team for too long, u can't dip his confidence by selecting Rohit who is in test squad for first time over rahane who is in squad for last 3 to 4 years... he is natural no. 4 and 5 ..... once Sachin retires kohli will fill no4 and rahane at no.5 should be good

  • JustAnObservation on October 31, 2013, 15:26 GMT

@Leggie. After five years and 51 Test and a dismal record, you still feel Ishant can be a good Test bowler; as if he is the last Indian who can bowl pace. There are hundreds of pace bowlers across the country who are waiting for a break and this guy continues to get selected. Baffling!! Why does the long rope theory not apply to Dinda, Umesh, Praveen, Vinay and many many others. The BCCI secretary says that one or two bad overs do not matter. But in this case, no one knows the track record of this bowler, they just keep on selecting him.

  • cricket_lover1 on October 31, 2013, 15:18 GMT

Ishant's doesn't deserve the place in tests/ODI/20-20. He needs to go to MRF pace foundations and correct his problems. he lost pace, line & length, he doesn't have good bouncers or yorkers..so for what reason he is there. Zaheer or Irfan pathan should have been in this test side..

  • akp19 on October 31, 2013, 15:16 GMT

Bhajji and Zaheer should have been part of this series along with Raydu and Nayar.... Sanju Samson and Baba Aprajith should also get a look soon.

  • on October 31, 2013, 15:16 GMT

Zaheer has been the premier indian pacer for over 10 years. He is getting physically weaker because it is not easy to carry the burden of over a billion expectations. Now,he should pe preserved for some crucial upcoming tests in england and South Africa and most importantly the world cup in australia. Ishwar Pandey should have been selected. He has taken a lot of wickets. He has got some serious ability.

I dont see either of them getting picked for SA tour too.Wow new life to Ind cricket.Gone are those days where PLAYERS are preferred than PERFORMANCES. The tough SURVIVE.

  • venkatesh018 on October 31, 2013, 15:01 GMT

So, is the Ravindra Jadeja experiment as a no.7 batsman and fifth bowling option over? Strange decision.

  • Prakmca on October 31, 2013, 14:59 GMT

Having Zaheer, Harbajan in the team is not going to help any ways. After playing one test or in the mid of first test, Zaheer will be injured as usual and will sit out. Even if he plays also he is not going to make any difference at all... Same case with Harbajan. Good they didn't consider.

Rahane, if he wants to survive, he has to perform. He is HERO in domestic cricket but ZERO in international level. Will he change that this time?? All he has to do is go and bat freely as he does in domestic/IPL matches. If he tries to play defensive too much, then thats all...Hope he fix the problem. We had same problem with Dhawan also when he played against WI in the beginning.. Which he rectified, and now he is star batsman in the lineup.

  • K_Srini on October 31, 2013, 14:54 GMT

I absolutely agree with the comments by 'chak-de-India Deux'. So much of rope given to poor performing Ishant Sharma. Irfan Pathan's all-round talent has been totally wasted by the selectors. He is any time far better than the likes of Ishant Sharma.

  • dailycric on October 31, 2013, 14:52 GMT

@samroy: please know what you are talking about before making claims about rahane: top scorer in the 2011 emerging players tournament in australia on fast, bouncy wickets as opener (which is what got him into the touring squad to oz as reserve opener); 86 on a seaming track for india A in south africa this summer, when every other batsman failed; runs in both innings on a green-top in lahli last week. hasn't grasped his chances? what chances has he got? he got one game against australia when dhawan was injured, after having spent 15 months as an official water-carrier, not even being released to play domestic games. in one-days, he was dropped for rohit after having just scored 40 - hardly a failure. people need security to cement their places as well. but in dhoni's side, the rainas and the rohits always get a long rope, and rahane none at all. as dravid says, give him a proper run, he will perform. good team but i fear dhoni will push rohit ahead of rahane again, as he did in ODIs.

  • arby182 on October 31, 2013, 14:48 GMT

I am not a favorite of Murli Vijay because he does not seem to be a big match player. His inconsistent scores in Tests will bear proof. Somehow I find the selectors are prone to selecting old & inconsistent players like Rohit Sharma, Murli Vijay etc. instead of giving opportunities to other young prospects like A. Nayar, Ambati Rayudu etc. Most probably Rohit Sharma has been included because of his recent consistent opening partnerships with Shikhar Dhawan. I am surprised that Ishant Sharma has been again chosen. Instead Ishwar Pandey could have been tried out. Further a reserve wicket keeper like Saha or Dinesh Karthik should have been included in the team.

  • BinduKumar on October 31, 2013, 14:48 GMT

Vijay is not a natural opening batsman. He doesn't do that at 1st class level too regularly. Given that Shikhar is a dasher, a sound technician to accompany is a must. Don't have any one in the mind right now. Rahul L might be a prospect but it is too early to say how he will flourish. Rahane should get rightly get 4th spot after Sachin fades away if we just go by 1st class records. Rohit is yet to prove his credibility! Looking at the way Sanju Samson bats (straight bat, balanced stance, fearless stroke making) I feel his time is nearing to get into the team. If we accept 'horses for courses' theory then this team looks good. For SA (or any other abroad trips) Zak should be included in place of Ojha or Jadeja.

  • Nandu_Athadu on October 31, 2013, 14:48 GMT

Good Team selection apart from Ishanth Over Zaheer..may be Selectors felt Zaheer needs to prove more fitness by playing more ranji matches..we cant consider WI series as a platform to check his fitness. Zaheer should be in SA and it is a must if India want to put some fight...Rohit inclusion is long pending and now selectors have taken a right decision..his style of play suits Tests more than ODIs.he will definetly be in the final 11 as he is Dhoni's favourite over Rahane..Rahane will find his place in final 11 once SACHIN retires may be in SA...SACHIN 4th place need to be filled by ONLY Kohli...followed by Rohit - Rahane - Dhoni..Bowling unit looks good on as this series is on Indian tracks...go India..

  • on October 31, 2013, 14:41 GMT

not a very satisfying selection but I seriously think this will be the last chance for ishant to prove if he s of any worth to the team at all...if he doesn't zaheer should walk into the team for the SA series(even if by chance ishant is retained) .... rohit should play at no.5 and not at 4... I honestly feel that rahane is a top order batsman and many will agree that he s much better than vijay in the longer version ...ideally he should open with dhawan but we l see how vijay performs... no.6 is a bother which needs to be solved quickly ...if we have vijay at the top then we need to give rahane a long run at no.6 because he doesn't have the short delivery syndrome like yuvraj and raina (neither of them deserve a ticket to SA) ...if rahane moves up the order please try out rayudu or manoj tiwary to fill in the no.6 spot....backing jaddu won't be a bad choice either...but zaheer and bhuvi are a must !

  • on October 31, 2013, 14:41 GMT

it's good that rohit has finally made into the test.squad after a string of good scores in ODI... may be after sachin's retirement selectors should look into ajinkya rahane... jadeja is an accurate bowler who creates pressure from one end. but im not sure about his batting abilities. It's good that selectors looking for SA tour and importantly zak's form. Everyone knows that zak gets better and better only when he bowls as many overs. Good.luck India "Play hard! Play Fair"

  • ajdhamdhere on October 31, 2013, 14:40 GMT

Don't be surprised if, Ojha, after being the best Indian spinner, will sit out & out-of-sorts Scientist Ravichandran Ashwin (Inventor of Pause delivery) will be a certainty along with Mishra as he's a leg-spinner.

  • pradeepsays on October 31, 2013, 14:38 GMT

Fast bowling is about confidence and aggression. Ishant is low on both right now. Hence the format change isn't going to make a difference. If he plays in the XI , he will be a soft target for the WI batsmen, and if he doesn't then he is wasting his time. He can better use that time in bowling in Ranji trophy and try and redeem himself before the SA tour. I guess the selection committee, Dhoni and Fletcher all see something that over 1 billion people in this country don't!

  • MiddleStump on October 31, 2013, 14:37 GMT

The selectors have done a decent job overall. Murali Vijay is a must after consecutive centuries in the last series. Zaheer Khan is a borderline case. He took five wickets in the match against Haryana but he could never clock speeds over 132K even though he looked fitter. He has clearly lost pace and on a bowler friendly pitch even Mohit Sharma and Joginder Sharma looked more likely to get wickets. Even if he is recalled, at the age of 35 it is doubtful whether he can last for more than a season or two. Harbhajan Singh is in a similar boat. With 2014 involving tours to South Africa, England, and Australia, the selectors could have prepared a list of young players to be groomed gradually over the next couple of seasons. There are some exciting prospects like Sanju Samson, Baba Aparajith, and Varun Aaron. They are all teen agers with a lot of talent that must not be allowed to go waste. There must be a 'look forward' policy instead of resorting to aged players as a stop gap solution.

  • India-Do-Well on October 31, 2013, 14:36 GMT

I think the only reason Zaheer was not selected it that they don't want to kill his confidence in India (or risk an injury). Face it he is not going to bowl as much in the home series as he will in SA and we need him there. Ishant is a cat but with 900 lives. If only we had supported Irfan Pathan that way - concentrate on bowling fast and nothing else, we would have had a match winner in our attack. Thank you very Guru Chappel

  • on October 31, 2013, 14:34 GMT

Raina should have been included . He is an explosive batsman and a valuable stock bowler . Zaheer should retire from Test cricket and focus on ODIs just like Malinga. Rahane is just not impressive . Ishant is a good bowler and should be given a long leash. Inclusion of Amit Misra is perplexing . No 4 spot should go to Gambir .He is a class batsman. I think his exclusion is political .

  • ajdhamdhere on October 31, 2013, 14:31 GMT

Again Ishant is in the Team. And after proving his form & fitness Zaheer is still out. And looking at Dhoni's choices, Ajinkya Rahane after making his Test debut after waiting for 16 Tests, will still have to sit out as Rohit will definitely get a chance (deserves on current form, but don't forget that Rahane batted brilliantly on green deck at Lahli). Waiting eagerly for Rohit's Test match debut, but not at the expense of Rahane. Rahane deserves a longer run.

  • SamRoy on October 31, 2013, 14:25 GMT

Ishwar Pandey for Ishant Sharma and Manprit Juneja for Rahane should have been ideal. Rahane plays neither quality pace nor quality spin on helpful (bowler friendly) tracks with ease. That is what separates international class batsman from domestic class batsman. That is what I thought was lacking in Manoj Tiwary and Badrinath. Also in Raina and Yuvraj's case but that has been proved (so I earn no points for pointing out the obvious). Murali Vijay plays spin well but needs to improve his backfoot strokeplay against pace bowlers or otherwise will fail in SA.

  • ajdhamdhere on October 31, 2013, 14:23 GMT

Here is my 16-Man India Test Squad After Sachins Retirement. We should play horses for courses. Bench Ashwin and play Ishwar Pandey in the playing eleven in SA/England/NZ ... play with 3-Spinners if in India ... If any of the top batsmen get injured play Ambati Rayudu. Seems like Jaddu is injured ... if that takes a long time to recover I would keep Baba Aparajith on reserve to get India cap. 1)Shikhar Dhawan 2)Ajinkya Rahane 3)Pujara 4)Rohit 5)Virat Kohli 6)M.S.Dhoni 7)R.Jadeja/Baba Aparajith 8)Ashwin 9)Zaheer 10)Bhuvi 11)Umesh Yadav 12)Ishwar Pandey 13)Ohja 14)Amit Mishra 15)Ambati Rayudu 16)Mohammed Shami

very good squad selection if you replace Ishant sharma with zak , Rohit sharma should play at no.4 after sachin's retirement , a player of his class is meant to play test cricket , should have started his test career at least 2 years ago but as the saying goes better late than never

  • Batmanindallas on October 31, 2013, 14:04 GMT

I think selectors have thrown Ishant a life line but this is it. If he does not perform here I dont think he is going to make it to SA. I was never a fan of Vijay but last test series he did perform so deserves his place. As for Rahane-thanks selectors have seen Raina is not their man for test team. But knowing Dhoni it will be Rohit who will get a shot and Rhane hopefully will get his turn in SA

  • on October 31, 2013, 14:02 GMT

most of the selection was on expected lines except zak getting ignored & ishant lucky enough to be retained. the reason i suppose the selectors still not convinced with zak's fitness & ishant being more suited 2 longer version. Great to see rohit making to test squad. he's much delayed test debut should be happening given he makes it to starting eleven. For me he's perfect replacement once sachin retires. He's test debut will do world of good to his career which finally has started upswing justifying the humungous talent he's got.

As long as we we have Srini on top of the board ... we will continue to see Vijay in the test squad. With so many away tours coming up in the next 2 years it is time we discard Vijay ... his overseas record in tests is pathetic. What is the matter with Ishant getting picked up who is in woeful form ? I strongly we believe we need to bring in Ishwar Pandey who has performed extremely good in India A tour to South Africa and is continuing that in the domestic season. Also cant understand the logic of replacing an allrounder(jaddu) with a batsman ... Abhishek Nayyar should have been the ideal replacement.

Hindusthani, in his post has not included MSD is what caught my attention. If I could get an explaination for that.

The series being Sachin's last, is going to be a memorable and emotional one. Blessed are those who have got the tickets to watch it in the stadium.

I have a problem when Ishant is playing instead of Zak. Yuvi has proved it in ODIs, then why test Zak in domestic for so long?

Batting line up looks amazing. Playing XI is all that matters and I hope Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma emerge as a successful opening pair. Good luck guys

Why selectors pick the same strength like an abroad series when they are going to play in india...it's ridiculous when there is ranji matches is going on... need to pick only 13 and release the other two to play for their state team. everybody is sure either ohja or mishra and shami will sit on bench. we should learn this from english or aussies cricket board.

The selection is okay except the inclusion of ishant. If selectors need young blood then why don't they pick mohit or jaydev or pandey instead of ishanth. Look on his statistics, played 51 matches with an avg of 38.00 and considering him as the spearhead... It totally ruins the meaning of spearhead... even in helpful conditions like england his avg is 58.18, in australia 73.54, in south africa 48.14, in nz 41.75... wat else we need to say... LUCKY ISHANT

  • wolf777 on October 31, 2013, 13:50 GMT

There will be only four bowlers in the playing eleven toiling hard on dead pitches. Spinners will lose their confidence and fast bowlers will pick up injuries due to overload. India, if wins, will end up losing few bowlers ahead of SA tour.

  • goldenpower on October 31, 2013, 13:41 GMT

selectors continously deny give a chance for Abishek Nayar like wasim jaffer. I could not believe why jadeja out from test.He is best test all-rounder.

  • panchneh on October 31, 2013, 13:41 GMT

we definitely need one left arm seamer. Zaheer Khan or where is Irfan Pathan upto...he can be much useful for SA tests.

  • Abbas67 on October 31, 2013, 13:37 GMT

Playing XI would be simple to choose - Dhawan Rahane Pujara Tendulkar Kohli Rohit Dhoni Mishra Shami Ojha Yadav !

  • bhushanB on October 31, 2013, 13:35 GMT

Can't complain much.... except for Ishanth's inclusion, I think everyone else has deserved their berth based on their recent form.

I think India should play two pacers, and my first choice would be Bhuvi and Umesh.

All three specialist spinners should play - Ashwin, Mishra, Ojha Jadeja rested is a god given opportunity for Mishra and Ojha to showcase their worth.

Vijay, though I hate him, has done little wrong and deserves his place at least for this series, but he should show big runs to retain his place for SA.

Good to see tough competition between Rahane & Rohit for the Sachin's place, but since they may not get a chance in the final X1, difficult to understand how it would help when selecting the team for SA tour.

  • BizBonBTW on October 31, 2013, 13:33 GMT

It's not done man it's not done.........On the basis of what should a player like Ishant be retained for a long while now only Mahi can answer?????? ZAK should have been the man to replace him...Rests of the selection is alright for me..............

  • keerthitommy on October 31, 2013, 13:19 GMT

A good all round selection.we should not bash ash because of odi series.last test series he won the man of the series

  • ABP235 on October 31, 2013, 13:18 GMT

Rahane, Umesh, Shami and Mishra will anyway sit out so no use arguing who else should be in or out! What we need is one pacer who is no mug with the bat - type of Irfan, to fill in that allrounders slot (no.7) which Jadeja occasionally fills. With just 4 bowlers, and very little bowling expected from the 6 batsmen, we will be exposed mighty well. No Dravid or Karthik in the team for Dhoni to roll his arm over as well!!!

  • Arrow011 on October 31, 2013, 13:17 GMT

Why do Indians need 4 pacemen inside India? It defies logic, we need spinners & an extra spinner like Rakesh Dhurv or Babbe Aparajit would have been better than going for failure bowler Ishant sharma. Dhoni's logic on Ishant is very unfortnate for India, Ishant has no control whatsoever, his hair is so long it closes his eyes & the guy sprays cannon fodder to the batsmen. Maybe Dhoni likes his hair more than Ishant.

A gud job by selectors.. though tm lacks som bal and varty... • on October 31, 2013, 13:09 GMT

Zaheer should have been included in squad in place of Ishant Sharma. I don't undertand till what point Ishant will be persisted by selectors. He has been one of the greatest let down of Indian cricket in last 5 years. If selectors thought Zaheer needed match practise then what could have been a better match practise than playing a home series against West Indies rather bowling to pedestrian batsmen in Ranji matches.

  • rash9 on October 31, 2013, 13:05 GMT

Venky, its nothing to do with Chennai or Mumbai, Vijay tries to play a lot conservative game than his natural game. I personally don't like the manufactured game, it has to be natural. Rohit plays his natural game, with every game he has got matured on shot selection but he scores at a decent pace, true he got more chances than others, but that was due to his talent in first class match. I am still surprised why they picked Vijay, they had better players than him.

what miracle ishant sharma has done over the past 3-4 years. any bowler playing for any nation for so much long must have once helped win his team. but he looks limping while bowling. his bowling style is as if he is dreaming every ball when he bowls , it will swing a long way. Selectors have guaranteed him to give a job for life time while other bowlers like varun aaron, r p singh have been removed from team after a single or tournament failure. Might they think that there are much more speed star in india like Ishan Sharma who have neither swing nor seem nor speed. At the time of debut his speed was over 140 easily. now he hardly reaches 135. He is saving his energy for long career but not giving his 100%. He has not swing. He can only bowl then he should bowl fast. The selectors are overall ordinary choosing ishant, the "Spiner".

  • on October 31, 2013, 12:32 GMT

Why People Still hanging behind Harbhajan. Your Remembrance is short lived? whats wrong with Ashwin (took highest wickets against Australia) Remember 2 tests both Ashwin and harbhajan played just compare their performance.

  • Sumeet.Gupta on October 31, 2013, 12:31 GMT

For all the people arguing against Vijay's inclusion, let us understand that the team is selected for the test matches and not ODIs. What will you tell as a reason to an opener who has scored 2 150+ scores in his last test series played? We Indian fans are a fickle lot when it comes to selections, but we must have a perspective too! Coming to the team, I think Rohit and Rahane will be out #4 and #6 in SA, since i don't see Jadeja to be at #6 in SA. I hope that Rohit does not agree to open in test matches just to get into the team, since failures there will give his detractors more ammunition. Instead, he should continue in the middle-order. Ishant is lucky, but then with Zak out of side, they might have thought of using an experienced head. Ashwin needs to be on his toes, though Bhajji is not really knocking the selectorial door down. I see where the Zak decision is coming from, they won't want a repeat of Lord's 2011. Let him gain some miles in Ranji. A good and balanced selection.

  • Srini_Indian on October 31, 2013, 12:15 GMT

Lot of funny comments here. ODIs and T20s are not the basis of selection for Tests. Ashwin and Vijay were the leading wicket taker and run scorer respectively in India's last test series. So you want them to be dropped? Rubbish! In place of Jadeja, I'd select Rohit Sharma, though Rahane hasn't done much wrong. Ishant has to do well in WI series or else he should be dropped for SA series. My XI for WI: Shikhar, Vijay, Pujara, Sachin, Kohli, Rohit, Dhoni, Ashwin, Ojha, Bhuvi, Umesh. My XI for SA: Shikhar, Vijay, Pujara, Rohit, Kohli, Karthik/Rahane, Dhoni, Ashwin, Bhuvi, Zak, Umesh.

  • CricketFanIndUS on October 31, 2013, 11:46 GMT

Congratulations Rohit!!! I hope you get your start at your more natural position in the middle order in the longer format. I think 6 for now will be a great spot and 5 when Sachin leaves and Kohli takes the number 4 spot.

The selection looks good, coincidentally all of a sudden we lost all the left hand batsmen except Dhawan!!! He will have to play long innings to get that left hand right hand combination advantage.

Good to see Umesh back. Ishant is a good choice as he can reverse swing among other reasons and so in Bhuvi with his capacity to move the ball both ways.

  • A.Ak on October 31, 2013, 11:42 GMT

With the strong batting line up, this is a good move. Leaving Jadeja was a tricky move, but Ojha and Mishra does as good as anyone with the ball and Ashwin could play the role of the all-rounder. I consider RSharma as a better test batsman than in ODI, he will be the perfect fit to play the Middle order. Badri and Rahane deserves a place too, but sadly(Badri) they have to wait.

  • Leggie on October 31, 2013, 11:15 GMT

@JustAnObservation ; IMHO, Ishant will be a much better bowler if he gives up T20 and ODIs. He can be an ideal Test bowler. If you see my comments in Ishant related articles, you'll find that I'm consistent in this observation. Yes, he does not have the required statistics to prove this now. But, in the long run, if he sticks to Test cricket alone, I'm sure he'll end up with a better average. The best part about Ishant is that he would be ready for long spells - which many fast bowlers dread. For the sake of Indian cricket and Ishant, I hope he stops the limited overs editions and focuses on Test cricket. Hope this is the start of it!

  • Rajgarg on October 31, 2013, 11:11 GMT

I hope that Rohit Sharma should be groomed to take place od Tendulkar after his 22th Test. He is the one who nis not only stylish but most talented player of this generation. Ishant seems to be MSD favourite player and always get benefit.

  • Naresh28 on October 31, 2013, 11:09 GMT

The bigger test for Vijay would be on overseas pitches - bounce, seam movement. An openers role is one of seeing off the new ball so that the middle order is not exposed to early. While there are enough candidates when matches are played in India the challenge for the selectors would be to find the right men for this role. Supposedly we have Dhawan on one end - who for the other. Rahane, Pujara, Rohit, Vijay - there is a need to experiment. We failed with Gambhir in Oz/England

Guys..Dont get too restless about selection.. Non inclusion of Zaheer instead of Ishant is the only surprise . But Zaheer needs to play some more wickets in first class so that he can be considered for SA tour

    1. M Vijay in the the team because he was India's highest scorer in the series vs Aus...430 runs with 61.42 Avg 2.R Ashwin is in the team because he was India's highest wicket taker in the series vs Aus...with 29 wickets 3. Harbajan done nothing worthy in Engalnd series and Australia series..He took 5 wickets in 2 test matches in Aus series with Avg of 40.8. No place in the spin department because Ashwin,Ojha and Mishra 4. R jadeja is not there because is injured. He is rested not dropped.. 5. Only Change could have done was with Ishant sharma, lets hope he comes good.. Any team selection people cry for somebody.. its common..Its almost perfect selection except one

  • 504429641 on October 31, 2013, 10:59 GMT

I kind of agree with the selection committee as those 15 are the best available options as of now. With Jadeja having shoulder strain, I guess the only change might be to replace Ishant with Zaheer. I personally feel Zaheer should have been picked because he is important for SA tests later. he has done well in SA in past (Smith's nemesis). Now, Zaheer can play a few more ranji matches to prove his fitness and hunger to return to Test side for SA tests.

  • on October 31, 2013, 10:51 GMT

For all guys posting blindly, please note, Jadeja has been rested coz of a shoulder strain. Good time to test out Rohit Sharma before the series against WI. Zak isn't bowling some amazing spells/taking loads of wickets at present. Need to look at the future. Umesh, Shami & B Kumar are good choices. Ishant should rather spend an entire season in county cricket & get his acts correct like Zak did in the past. The same goes with Irfan, Munaf etc. I think Ashwin should be given a break from the odi series against WI & the selectors can once test out Bhajji. Sehwag is not a long term option, its better if people start looking for results rather than keep pondering on "who WAS a good player". Records are all fine, but if you can't score a test ton in 2 years, you definitely don't deserve a spot.

  • archnat1112 on October 31, 2013, 10:46 GMT

The comments section here is an eye opener on how many people really read the whole article that Cricinfo publishes!! Why the anguish over Jadeja, who has been RESTED? And Vijay performed well in the last Test series - there is no real reason to drop him now and it has nothing to do with CSK. Ishant is also someone who has not done badly in Test matches and has even maintained his wicket to provide support on a couple of occasions. Ashwin is a very good batsman plus bowler option. He is excellent in Tests and stats speak for themselves. I think this is a very good team selection and I'm sure we will perform well.

  • PranayC on October 31, 2013, 10:46 GMT

Based on the comments I have read, while everyone is concerned about SA tour, they are baffled by the selection of Ishant and Vijay. As much I dislike Vijay, I must say, Vijay has earned his place, at least for now. Ishant is a rather curious case. I would love to see him perform because if there is one bowler in India who 'could' become a success in tests, its him. Bhuvi may not be that effective after 20-30 overs till the next new ball and I am not sure if Umesh can have long spells given fitness issues. If they prove me wrong, great, but till then, we can't ignore Ishant. We can not have 2-3 spinners playing in SA. We need 3 fast bowlers plus Ashwin and Jadeja.

The Panel has done some good work, lets recognize it. So please stop bashing Dhoni for everything. A few months back, everyone was gunning down Dhoni for keep selecting Jadeja and Rohit, now everyone wants them in the first team. Are Rohit or Ishant from CSK? What if Mohit Sharma gets selected? Favoritism? PS: Not a CSK fan!

  • CricketMaan on October 31, 2013, 10:44 GMT

Quite harsh on Jadeja, unless they play Ohja and Ashwin. In all honesty Jadeja looked a lot more consistent than Ohja or Ashwin. He can't bat in Tests but neither can other spinners.

  • on October 31, 2013, 10:38 GMT

Thanks God that there are no Yuvraj singh & Raina in the team, surprised to see ishant instead of zaheer but its good to see a youngster like shami in the squad. Mishra being a leg spinner has been preferred over Harbhajan. But i am surprised to see 4 fast bowlers in the squad. India is not going to play more than 2 fast bowlers in any test matches (may play with 1 seamer & 3 spinner).

  • on October 31, 2013, 10:36 GMT

I think selectors has made wise decision. Elimination of Zak has been done to prove his fitness than form. And, with 13 tests (2 in SA, 2 in NZ, 5 in ENG & 4 in AUS) coming in foreign conditions, we need a experienced bowlers as a spearhead. Ishant is not surely that guy. Other young fast bowlers have less experience of less than 10 test matches. While Zak can gain fitness in Ranji matches, the new fast bowlers can prove their mantle in matches against a good test team. Ishant is not eliminated because of his bad one day form. So, last life line for him. But seelction of Shami on the basis of good one day performance than Ishwar Pandey was bit puzzling for me.If we look at test side, we have only three players with more than 20 match experience in possible selection squad for future : Dhoni (74 test), Zaheer (86), Dinesh Karthik (23), and Gautam Gambhir (51). So we lack highly on batting strengths. Murali Vijay is domestic giant and will fail significant problem on fast pitches....

  • Sajish on October 31, 2013, 10:33 GMT

Selectors are not doing anything special or not working properly for a good Test Team Selection. Why Murali Vijay still in team? Is it because India playing home tests? I wonder what he will do if he selected for SA away Test series! Selectors are rotating players from ODI team into Tests. Just swapping. Why Harbhajan dropped ? because of Ashwin? If Jadeja rested then an Inform Harbhajan should have been in the team. Amit Mishra is the best leg spinner in India at present and his selection is good. Just took him from ODI to Tests. Why Ishant Sharma in team? What happened to Zaheer? If India tours SA then Zaheer requires at the top. After all Selectors are not working hardly as all known names are in the team. Why Ishwar Pandey not selected after taking him to SA A tour? Not a good selection at all..

Zaheer Khan should have been in . Otherwise an excellent squad . By resting (dropping ) Ravindra Jadeja , the selectors have created a good headache for team management . Whether to go with 7 batsman , 4 bowlers (old formula ) , in that case either Rohit(mostly) or Rahane can be in or to go with 3 pace , 2 spinners (Keeping SA series in mind ) ,Bhuvi , Umesh , Shami (my opinion ) / Ishanth ( Dhoni's opinion :P) or to go with 2 pace , 3 spinners ( Sub Continent conditions ) by bringing amit mishra in ... Excellent squad with too many options for captain

  • shrikant.upasani on October 31, 2013, 10:28 GMT

Please somebody remind to the selection committee the last Test we played against Aussie and MOM was Ravindra Jadeja ...which they have removed from the squad and what reasons god only knows ..its hear breaking must be for the RJ who is consistent in his bowling for past years in all the formats..or they have forgot the venues...4 seamers and 3 spinner in Indian condition ...

Unlucky Zak to miss the pirty. But it will encourage him to make a stronger come back as he did in 2006 SA trip. All the best to every player selected. Make a 2-0 win and grand farewell for Sachin.

  • on October 31, 2013, 10:23 GMT

Why the hell isnt Harbhajan Sigh selected? He took 9 wickets in the Ranji Game... Same with Zak... Why t=is Ishant Sharma so favorite? Is he like the new golden boy for MS Dhoni like Piyush Chawla a few years ago? Harbhajan and Zak's presence is a must ahead of the South Africa tour!!!

  • on October 31, 2013, 10:22 GMT

m vijay not a good selection......

  • on October 31, 2013, 10:22 GMT

I completely agree with selectors . I don't know why many people here asking about jadeja and Ishant. jadeja is not dropped, he is rested due to shoulder injury and Ishant is good test team selection because he is a naturally gifted good length bowler which is a test wicket length to take wickets. Amit mishra is always good option. a leg spinner is a geuine wickettaker especially in test cricket and outside subcontinent where pitches will not be taylot made, a leg spinner still can turn the bowl there because he uses his hand not fingers as offies used to do. I think selectors have also done good thing by picking both rohit and rahane becuase they both are going to be in test team after retirement of master blaster. I think rohit will play both of these two tests but once tendulkar will retire, rahane should be an automatic choice. and Its good zaheer is not picked at this moment because he still need more touch in the middle and he is more valubale to team India in south africa's tour

  • on October 31, 2013, 10:20 GMT

The reason for not selecting Zak, Sehwag & Gambhir is to give them a chance to score heavily & get wickets in Domestic cricket rather than failing at international level & end their career. But Why Ishant Sharma?

  • on October 31, 2013, 10:19 GMT

can't believe jadeja got dropped, I understand he is having a rough series against australia does not mean he should be dropped after taking 27 wickets in 5 test matches at an average of 19 and an economy of 2. odi's is totally different from test cricket. I think jadeja would have been a key factor.

  • cricketlover_crazy on October 31, 2013, 10:17 GMT

Indian selectors should have selected the squad keeping SA tour on mind, if that was the case, then how come Vijay has been selected. He is not in form since champion league and a failure in both the innings of Ranji trophy. I really hope Dhoni does not ask Rohit to open the innings with Shikar as he will not succeed in that role. I have seen him playing loose at the beginning of his innings, he can somehow survive in the middle order and cannot at the top order. As usual Rahane will be on bench again, poor fellow i really pity him. Ashwin, come on he is not a good bowler these days, he has lost his control and he is not patient enough being a spinner, he may still succeed because of windies poor ability to play spin. I hope he will not as i don't like his work ethics as a cricketer.

  • dhoni_sachin_fan on October 31, 2013, 10:16 GMT

Good team selection. Can't find much fault....And knowing that Dhoni doesn't like to make too many changes, I think it will Vijay opening with Dhawan while Rohit will play in place of Rahane at No.6...Rest of the team is fairly standard.

  • on October 31, 2013, 10:16 GMT

TEAM INDIA selection by selectors is like "PLAYING A VIOLIN IN BACK OF A BUFFALO" truly i dont get any point what the selectors are trying to prove ....the bowling line up is something extra-ordinary all the bowlers selected seems to be in excellent form in aus series especially ishant,ashwin,mishra..rocking the one question i want to ask is why bhajji and zak not included with bhajji picking 4wkts in clt20 finals and 9wkts in his first ranji game and zak also pickes 5wkts..with big overseas season comming around bhajji and zak must be there..otherwise no words

Sehwag, and Gambhir deserve to be given another chance. Bring back irfan, zaheer, viru, gambhir, and have a look a bhaji. Before we write the old team off, have a look at some of the elder, more experienced players. A mix of the old bowlers. eg Zaheer, Irfan and the younger eg. Bhuvneshwar would be beneficial for all. The battin is strong, with the openers, virat, dhoni, jadeja. Raina, and Yuvi as good as they are struglle against the short ball they can make way for someone like either Sehwag or Badrinath or Vijay. Mishra and Ashwin work well and should be retained

  • Leggie on October 31, 2013, 10:14 GMT

Some appalling comments coming in reflect how mixed-up people are in comparing limited overs cricket & Test cricket. Test matches require "temperament" over a period of 5 consecutive days - with the environment / pitch / match situation changing consistently. It's also a metal battle and is literally a different ball game! The selected squad is a decent one with no apparent glaring errors. Zaheer's decision is a marginal one, but for that the squad has almost picked itself! @Ratandeep's comments provides you with statistics to back the selection.

  • SamRoy on October 31, 2013, 10:13 GMT

One more thing -- selection of Ashwin. This is only where I beg to differ from popular opinion. Ashwin is the most talented test cricketer in the country. Period. When he is in form he bowls excellent off-spin. He batted better than Dhoni, Gambhir, Sehwag, Laxman and Dravid in Australia. He can field in the slips and is getting better there. Yes, his outfielding is bad but so was Laxman's and Ganguly's and nobody complained in test cricket. I still think Mishra should be selected ahead of him in ODIs but in tests there is absolutely no one to replace him at the moment. He is not the best spinner in the country though. Ojha is the best spinner. Ashwin second best spinner. On a square turner Jadeja is the best spinner because of his pace (for a spinner) and accuracy.

  • PraveenKaushik on October 31, 2013, 10:13 GMT

Wonder how many people complaining abt Jadeja, they comment just for the sake of commenting without even reading the article. Jadeja has been RESTED due to the shoulder strain.

  • Sultan2007 on October 31, 2013, 10:13 GMT

Excellent Team selection. Pity about Zaheer though especially with Ishant retained. I suspect this is a pointer to the overseas tour and the belief that Ishant will be a key contributor on those bouncier tracks. I loved to see Rohit Sharma included. Rahane is in the form of his life as well. I hope both Rahane and Rohit get a shot at the starting eleven. My batting would be Rahane/Dhawan/Pujara/Sachin/Kohli/Rohit/Dhoni/Ashwin/Ojha/Umesh/Bhuvi. Should be exciting!

  • 504429641 on October 31, 2013, 10:11 GMT

Good to see Shami in the list. But time will tell the worth of M.Vijay. Was his earlier inngs were fluke or not? We will miss Jadeja for sure. Valuable runs and crucial wickets.

  • AamirKhan-SuperStar on October 31, 2013, 10:06 GMT

Its a very good team though. Mishra's leg spin is too valuable to be sidelined. There aren't good leg spinners in world cricket now. Rohit Sharma is a good add to the middle order.

What changes should have been made to this selected squad:

Amit Mishtra OUT - Harbhajan Singh IN Shami Ahmed OUT - Zaheer Khan IN Ishant Sharma OUT - Irfan Pathan IN

  • Siddhesh31 on October 31, 2013, 10:05 GMT

My team would be - Dhawan, Pujara, Kohli, Sachin, Rahane, Rohit, Dhoni, Ashwin, Bhuvaneshwar, Umesh, Ojha/Mishra. I think Vijay should play some ranji matches to find a place in this squad. But saying so, Vijay is sure to get a place in this team as per Dhoni's choice. Also i feel that for the South Africa tour, our all-rounder should be Abhishek Nayar provided he scores well in the next few Ranji matches both with the bat and ball. ALL THE BEST TEAM INDIA !!!

  • A__J on October 31, 2013, 10:03 GMT

Zaheer Khan is the rightful spearhead of the bowling attack. India should invest in trying to get him back to fittness and back into the team. Have they forgotten his talents? Zaheer, Bhuvneshwar, Yadav, and Shami seem to be the best choices. Ashwin, Jadeja, and Mishra work well as a unit.

  • AamirKhan-SuperStar on October 31, 2013, 10:02 GMT

2 Tests in south africa, 2 in new zealand, 5 in england. You need Zaheer to guide young pacers on foreign tours. He can hone his skills in Ranji till South African tour, good decision to retain Ishant, he & zaheer are india's best fast bowlers in tests, good to see Umesh yadav in team.

  • on October 31, 2013, 10:02 GMT

South Indians are with M.Vijay. No doubt he had performed very well in the past series. But its Dhawan and Rohit who had been opening exceedingly well for India and both of them are in good knock as well. .I wonder if Dhoni dare to make changes at the top slot.

Was just looking up on how or why M Vijay was selected and came across this article

    http://www.espncricinfo.com/india/content/story/627020.html

I still feel that he is going to bomb big time as he was sturggling to get going in the Palam Ground couple of days back. I was around that area and went to the ground for an hour and could see him struggling against very average bowling. Hope he blazes away and negates all the criticism that he is getting for his selection in the team, pretty similar to what he did in the Border Gavaskar Trophy.

Those who question the selection of Ashwin have to notice that he picked up 29 wickets in the Border Gavaskar trophy which had 4 5-Wicket hauls. He definitely cannot be dropped

  • Harmony111 on October 31, 2013, 9:57 GMT

I am completely baffled why Ravindra Jadeja has been dropped. He was quite awesome vs Aus as a bowler. Even in the current ODI series vs Aus where high RR has been the norm, he has bowled reasonably cheaply.

Equally, I am completely baffled why Ishant Sharma has been retained. He is never going to learn what fast bowling is, what seam movement is, what control is, what smart bowling is.

I am not baffled by the decision of retaining Murali Vijay. He is a classy, elegant batsman in the Rohit Sharma mould. If we give him time he too can become a very good batsman. I think he got 2 BIG 100s vs Aus, didn't he? We need him in good form for SA.

Zaheer's time is up. Sad but true. Moreover, he now lacks the attitude. He is never seen as being serious while fielding or while batting.

  • sidda_123 on October 31, 2013, 9:54 GMT

Sehwag is one of the best indian batsmen when coming to playing test cricket across the world...please bring him back in the indian test team...i do not understand the selection of Ishant sharma??? Please do not forget that we have a away series against South Africa...Sehwag should be brought back into the indian team. A player of Sehwag's class shouldn't be judged on his performance in Domestic cricket...Sehwag should be judged by his test record...Zaheer still is the best pace bowler India have at the moment...both sehwag & zaheer should be selected in the indian test team ahead of Southafrica series!!!

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:52 GMT

I'd love to see a couple of raw, tall, young lads who can bowl 145-150 on regular basis, from the domestic circuit. But selectors in verge of making Ishant Sharma a legend. Zak come back would have been amazing.

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:51 GMT

for all those who want vijay out,as already someone pointed out he was the leading run scorer with 430 runs at an average of 61.42......that proves his inclusion......and why are people pointing fingers at ashwin......this series is the only one that was bad for him and please do look at his test bowling average and also his records with the bat...he is one of the strengths for india at present......don't know why the selectors had ignored people like Badrinath and zaheer.........Badri deserves to play.......he is a great test asset for india.....overall it is an average selection.......

Ravindra Jadeja does not need much reason to be dropped. Guess how many wickets he has taken in five Tests? 27!!! He is a brilliant fielder and a powerful hitter to boot. Is it his fault that he plays One-day matches well?

  • fah4 on October 31, 2013, 9:45 GMT

Zak should have been included in place of Ishant. He has done enough to get dropped. With the bowlers selected both matches will be high scoring drawn tests. India should play for win not draw and we should prepare our bowlers for coming SA series in Dec.

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:44 GMT

I wonder how Ishant retain his place. he was the worst bowler since test cricket born

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:44 GMT

There are some question marks about Vijay and Ashwin.

Let me try to understand why they were picked. In the last test series vs Australia, Ashwin was the Man of the Series bagging maximum wickets. Similarly Vijay was the leading run scorer in the same series. So keeping only test matches in mind, it is justified. Vijay succeeded in the last series bcoz he took his own time to settle down which none can afford in ODI's. So even if he failed in the ODI's there is still hope he can make mark in tests like he did in Ind vs Oz series earlier this year.

Please try to understand that the ODI series against Australia is totally different from test matches w.r.t rules. If pitches are flat, then no bowler will be effective. In this series even the Australian bowlers too conceded lots of runs.

So the selection is quite predictable.

The only change I would have made is to bring Zaheer in place of Ishant since if Zaheer has to go to SA, he needs some international match practice.

  • JustAnObservation on October 31, 2013, 9:44 GMT

How can the selectors justify Ishant's selection?

In the past two years, this guy has taken 22 wickets from 15 Test matches at an average of 67! Forget about taking 5 wickets in an innings, he has not taken 5 wickets in a Test match during this period. Zaheer or Mohit would have been a much better option.

Do the selectors ever look at the performance sheet of players before selecting? It seems his name is always ticked in after Dhoni's whenever the squad is announced either for Tests, ODIs or T20s.

  • India2014 on October 31, 2013, 9:43 GMT

Zaheer Khan should have been in the place of Ishant sharma or Umesh yadav. Other than that good selection. Zaheer Khan is a rare find in India, a bowler for any conditions and any type of pitch. I don't know why M.S.D is not backing him.

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:39 GMT

First BCCI should Terminate Sandeep Patil being a selector for Selecting Isanth Sharm & Muruli Vijay. We think both are in India Team of Politics. Terminate Sandeep Patil & Hire Legendery Kapil Dev as a new selector. He will choose the best Team with his creativity... My Proposal Dream Test Team would be... as batting order.. 01. Ajinkya Rahane 02. Shikhar Dhawan, 03. Cheteshwar Pujara, 04. Sachin Tendulkar, 05. Virat Kohli 06. MS Dhoni (capt), 07. R Ashwin, 08, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, 09. Umesh Yadav, 10. Shami Ahmed 11. • on October 31, 2013, 9:37 GMT

So Shami is back to being Shami Ahmed? Will somebody tell him that it's not in the name - it's how you perform that matters. He bowled at a decent pace, in the ODI's, and moved the ball both ways - albeit, it with the white ball. I think he will do well in Tests, if selected ahead of Ishant Sharma. Will Rohit Sharma open in Tests, as in the ODI's? I think it's worth giving him the top slot. He will do well, as did Virendra Sehwag.

  • Naresh28 on October 31, 2013, 9:35 GMT

Tough for the selectors to choose with few slots. Players like Juneja, Zol, I Pandey, Shukla, Mohit, Aparajith, Samson - need to be kept fit by sending them on India A trips. Would prefer ZAKS amongst the pacers and to lead the bowlers in the selection above. The investment ZAKS made to get fit is probably going to get lost. Nice to see Yadav back except is he match fit? Ishant has to go back to domestic cricket. We all saw that in the ODI's - yes he is a workhorse, but effective is he?

  • knownothingaboutcricket on October 31, 2013, 9:33 GMT

Reason for not selecting Zaheer: 1. Zaheer has to proove his fitness by playing some more FCC. Selectors don't want that out of the 2 seam/pace bowlers in the final XI, one of them breaks down at the beginning of the match or during its course! 2. In any case , since Bhuvi is already confirmed for one of those opening bowler's slots, the 2nd slot should ideally go to a genuinely quick bowler like Umesh Yadav or someone who can hit the high 130s/ early 140s. ( maybe someone like Shami ).

Interesting Q: then why pick Ishant and not Zaheer? Because Ishant has performed well this year against the Aussies in the Tests earlier-give him another chance....

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:31 GMT

Selecting a player on the basis of his good form in the previous series against the same team should not be the policy of the selectors. The form of the player at the time of selection is more important. While I appreciate selection of Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane I do not find any logic in including a flop cricketer like Murli Vijay in the team. He has been miserably failing to score in domestic matches. The mystery behind not considering talented Manoj Tiwary is unable to understand.

  • HarshadShastri on October 31, 2013, 9:30 GMT

Ask Murali vijay to play some ranaji, county cricket. Even in last IPL he cud not do much. Why the hell he is still in the team? Ajinkya Rahane deserves more chances to be in first 11 and not in 15 men's squad. Dhoni is favouring much more to CSK guys. Ashwin has also started to be in Murali Vijay, Ishant Sharma's league. We will need better bowlers against SA and should concentrate on it. Is it a series between CSK vs T&T???

Why Ashwin again , he has not been bowling well at all in the last few matches and this was the same reason why Harbajan was dropped, but I think he has done well in the IPL, Champions league and even in the first match of this year Ranji season where he has taken 9 wickets. At the end of the day experience also counts and he is the only bowler who has taken 400 + test wickets who is still playing. I think the selectors need to re think on this and why not Zaheer as he is India's most experienced seamer and who is 100 % fit after he fitness program in France and i am sure that he could have been in this squad in place of Ishant Sharma.. we also have the test series against the South Africa coming up and Zaheer any day is a better player

Surprised that Indian selectors did not think it apt to pick two off-spinners against the WI, considering that WI have almost 7 left handers in the squad with the likes of Gayle, Keiran Powell, Darren Bravo, Chanderpaul, Narsingh Deonarine, Veerasammy Permaul & Sunil Narine. Definitely Harbhajan as the 2nd offie, considering his excellent form in the CLT20 final and now in the just-concluded Ranji Trophy match where he took 9 wickets , deserved a place in the squad. No worries guys.. just njy sachin's last moments. Ranji is on. Gauti, Zaheer will come hard and definitely fly to SA. Rahane should be played in both the tests. Poor guy benched almost for 3 years .

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:23 GMT

India should go with inform players rather than out of form Ashwin, Ishant & Vijay. Rahane & Rohit is in good form and can play in Sachin's place. My main worry is bowling department... very few quality test bowler in India.

  • Rahul_78 on October 31, 2013, 9:22 GMT

I might be wrong but I just get the feeling looking at the team selection that India is going to produce turners. This is a farewell party of Indias most prodigious son and no chances will be taken to spoil the party.

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:22 GMT

Zaheer should have been included in the team in place of Ishant because he is experienced and a far better bowler. The next 3 test series are overseas and there you seriously require Zaheer as bowling spearhead. Giving rest to Jadeja is a good one because he has been playing continuously in all forms for last year.M Vijay is given another because of his success in the last Test Series.Shami Ahmed should be given a go in this test series. He is improving as a bowler.Overall , not a bad selection except Zaheer exclusion.

  • nicks_28785 on October 31, 2013, 9:22 GMT

For all of you questioning the selection of M. Vijay, he has got two 150+ Scores and one 50+ Score in last three test matches. I think this is a brilliant team selection. Jadeja's non-selection/rest is a boon. Because I believe now that 7th position spot has to go to Rohit. He is the only batsman who can bowl a bit. This will provide India with a genuine batsman in middle order when they go overseas. Although Zaheer is not selected, I believe he will come back when India tour SA. A home series is ideal to give some match practice to our inexperienced bowlers before they go for SA. My team: Rohit in the place of Jadeja, two seamers and two spinners.

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:20 GMT

for gods sake drop ishant. make him go back to domestic circuit- its very much on now) and he will come back as a much better bowler

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:20 GMT

Give a chance to Sanju Samson...... why zaheer didn't get a chance???

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:20 GMT

Disappointing with this squad just because of India's poor bowling attack.....They should give chance to "Rishi Dhawan".....

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:17 GMT

give chance for, junjela, zol.baba, mandeep, opening batsman as reddy, bowler ashish reddy, optional wicketkepeer sanju, mukund, rishi dhawan, another fine kepeer is u kaul from punjab when they will get chance to international level.

  • cricketlover_crazy on October 31, 2013, 9:16 GMT

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:16 GMT

can't laugh can't even cry to c ishanth ashwin n most important vijay ......rofl......bring back zaheer bhajji.... instead of vijay gambhir or sehwag can be given a chance.....and ashwin.... ramesh pawar is better spinner than ashwin

  • Witty_Cricketer on October 31, 2013, 9:15 GMT

@sachin5864, If I am not wrong Murali Vijay was one of the top 3 scorers in the previous test series, what explanation do you give him for dropping him?

  • ladycricfan on October 31, 2013, 9:15 GMT

Fast bowlers should last for5 days. Ishant is a tried and tested workhorse. He works hard on his fitness and is very fit. Zaheer is injury prone. Over all Good selection. Same squad will be ready for SA as well. Only negetive is an allrounder is missing. Ashwin, Mishra and Bhuvi are bowlers who can bat a bit. Jadeja will be missed in WI series in India.

  • HarshadShastri on October 31, 2013, 9:14 GMT

Zaheer Khan struggled to make an impression on selectors even though he has taken few weekets in Ranaji. We sjould also consider that he has not taken wickets of better batsmaen. However he should have got another chance to show his metal before embarking to SA. Matches against WI would have helped him to gain and regain his confidence and momentum.

  • Vnott on October 31, 2013, 9:13 GMT

Ishwar Pandey is in good form. would hv been nice to pick him ahead of Shami and Ishant. Certainly Ishant. I do hope he goes to SA. Umesh, Bhuvaneshwar, Ishwar and Shami would be a good attack for SA as well. Karthik must come back for SA as No: 5.

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:13 GMT

The two weak links: Murali Vijay & Ishant Sharma.(Wasting two slots!)

The suspect: Ashwin. So, 15 comes down to 12.

dhoni is sensible, the above mentioned three players should be benched. Depending on the narure of the pitch one spinner or one pacer from the 12 will have to be benched.

Hope, Rahane will be one of the openers. (Seeing Dhoni's past preferences, low chance though)

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:13 GMT

All the critics of Murali Vijay must not forget he was the leadinf run scorer in the last test series scoring 153 and 167 vs australia

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:13 GMT

poor rahane..set to warm the bench once again..

  • SamRoy on October 31, 2013, 9:13 GMT

Ishant Sharma doesn't deserve to be anywhere near test tem. Especially when a certain Ishwar Pandey is there. Even Dhawal Kulkarni will do a better job than Ishant 'All hair and no grey matter' Sharma.

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:12 GMT

Its surprise to see the name of two, M Vijay & Ishant Sharma in the team. SOCKING

  • vijay- on October 31, 2013, 9:12 GMT

y is murli vijay and ishant is taken.

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:11 GMT

Why isn't Ravindra Jadeja featuring in this squad??? he can be most used in the test matches where the batsman cant go after him all the time & his nagging length and stump to stump bowling is actually most effective. And even if the ball is turning just a little bit he comes to the party. Plus he can sometimes hold a bat too at no.7 after Dhoni.

Plus no Zaheer, Vijay In. Questions too many Questions!!!

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:11 GMT

Sachin's farewell series without Sehwag. Interesting, I don't know why people questioning his form as last fours years of Indian test cricket glory, mostly it was sehwag who was responsible for test win. I don't think Rahane will get the chance in playing 11, So why not Sehwag. As its WI in subcontinent conditions + last tour before SA tour. One senior player in form is required for SA tour.

And Ishant Sharma, Dhoni this is not your cool decision, stop spoon feeding Ishant and Ashwin (out of form) as players like Zaheer and harbhajan with 413 wickets (33 years only"lots of cricket and wickets pending") are far better options. Dhoni you might be the best finisher but you don't know how to select your players.

P.S. I am not judging Ashwin's Test form with ODI's (with flat tracks) but ashwin's performance is not good in terms of his line and length and off spin ability (he is trying too much with his carrom ball)

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:11 GMT

Ishanth?? Even he wouldn't know why they are picking him up!! Weird selection! It's a no brainer to keep Zaheer out anymore! Come on selectors, wake up for Ishanth's sake!

  • Champs1 on October 31, 2013, 9:11 GMT

Ishant Sharma... The Indian "Jade Dernbach"... :)

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:10 GMT

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:09 GMT

i was shocked wit few inclsions rahane-dinesh karthik ishant-zaheer

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:08 GMT

@ Nirmal Shah, I hope that was all with pun intended... If so, good one!

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:07 GMT

Got to admire the smartness of selectors here, they have created opening for Rohit Sharma to make test debut and to stake claim in the middle order. I will be surprised if more deserving Ajinkya Rahane get nod ahead. Given no.of left handers in WI, it is good to rest Jadeja and bring extra batsman.I would have preferred Bhaji in place of Mishra coz of no.of left handers in the WI team. Interesting to see which fast bowler gets chance, Bhuvi was under bowled in Aus series and Ishant is not in form. Umesh cant be given long spells (SA tour) and Shami yet to make debut. My XI - Vijay, Dhawan, Pujara, Tendulkar, Kohli, Rahane, Dhoni, Ashwin, Ohja, Bhuvi & Umesh, for second test play Shami ahead of Umesh. I want to see Shami in Whites before SA tour.

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:07 GMT

wow I see so many comments on the team.the same team (especially bowling) was patted on the back after the world cup. now from where the heck does the word politics co.e from. no team can always keep winning. every team will change and develop. good team. feel Vijay won't get in will be between rohit and rahane with dawan. and for me ojha to play will be of different variation with ashwin.

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:07 GMT

Ishwar Pandey just took 7 wickets in his 1st ranji game. He was highest wicket taker in last year ranji season. Why aren't selectors giving him a chance. And why Vijay in team???

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:07 GMT

where is gauti and zak, why they include ishant and vijay..... indian selectors are not going right..

  • SamRoy on October 31, 2013, 9:04 GMT

Jadeja missing out to injury is a big loss in Indian conditions. He is the best spinner when the ball is turning square because he is quick (for a spinner) and accurate and some of his balls turn and others go straight on. If the pitch is true he is not effective. He doesn't have flight and loop to deceive batsman in the air. Btw wht is Mishra doing in the test squad? His test bowling has been pathetic. Averages 42 for christ's sake. And

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:04 GMT

Zaheer and Gambhir should have been in the squad for Shami and Rahane/Rohit. With all the overseas tests coming, we need Zaheer who would test any batsman in those seamer friendly conditions. Harsh as it may sound but really feel Vijay will not be able to perform overseas specially in front of Steyn, Philander and Morkel... So Gambhir in the reserves will give us a chance if Vijay crumbles. Had this not been Tendulkar's retirement celebration series, then with the future preps in mind Gambhir would have easily fit in place of Sachin accommodating both Rahane and Rohit Sharma as well so cant really blame the selectors there but Shami over Zaheer is a bad call.

  • sachin5864 on October 31, 2013, 9:03 GMT

why Murli vijay y nt Sanju samson... try sme perfect young guns na...

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:03 GMT

selection of ishant sharma doesnt make any sense. Just for the shake of keeping him in squad is not doing good.He should go back to domestic cricket in order to find his form and make all the correction needed in his bowling style (n hair too). come on give the chance to those who deserve it.bring back zaheer to the squad who can guide these young bowler.

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:02 GMT

my xi: dhawan rahane pujara srt kohli rohit msd ashwin ojha umesh bhubi plz don't select sami or ishwant both r very ordinary.

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:02 GMT

y is ishant sharma again selected?? zak nids to prove his fitness a bit more i guess. same goes for gambhir n sehwag. perhaps mohit sharma cud b tested. it mite b immature bt he rili tested tendulkar in da ranjis, haryana vs mumbai.

  • satishchandar on October 31, 2013, 9:01 GMT

Though it would be a bit odd, i would love the team management to drop Jadeja and try out Rohit at no.6 slot.. Certainly, he is going to travel to SA and, the Sachin slot need to be filled by extra batsman.. Would be tempted to include him there than RHJ who would ba big asset as third spinner but still, Rohit needs a small exposure though in home conditions.. Wouldn't mind a rest to Kohli either.. Bring in both Rahane and Rohit into the playing 11.. My 11 would be, Dhawan, Vijay, Pujara, Sachin, Rohit, Virat/Rahane, MSD, Ashwin/Mishra, Bhuvi, Umesh, Ojha..

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:01 GMT

Murali Vijay was the leading run scorer in Border-gavaskar trophy with two hundreds and a fifty. I think that justifies his inclusion

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:00 GMT

Why Murali Vijay is there in the team because of Chennai Super King connection.

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:00 GMT

Concerning the batsmen selected the selectors have done a fair job.......bowling.......!!!!!why was zaheer ignored......this attack is already leaking 300+ runs in almost all the matches in the current series.......he should have been included.....

  • on October 31, 2013, 9:00 GMT

ashwin again. Drop him for gods sake. Mishra got 5 wickets against Australia on debut, but how come he hasn't had many chances. I like the inclusion of shami though. And rahanee and rohit and yadav. I would like to see ojha bowl outside India as well.

  • Lets_Bash_Indians on October 31, 2013, 8:59 GMT

Chill out guys,,its a Check for these players,,, cuz they are preparing for the SA tour,, off course zaheer khan , Gautam Gambhir & more... will be included n Overseas test.

  • cnksnk on October 31, 2013, 8:58 GMT

Under the circumstances the best possible team, although Zak would have added strength to he team. My team would be Dhawan, Vijay, pujara, SRT, Kholi, Rohit/ rahane, dhoni, Aswin, Ojha, Buvi and Umesh. Loosing JadejA is a loss in India as he was successful against Australia and can bat in Indian conditions. Would prefer Rahane to play although I suspect based on curent form Rohit will make his debut.

  • heavy_cav_1066 on October 31, 2013, 8:58 GMT

a balanced squad with 1 wicketkeeper, 7 batsmen, 4 seamers and 3 spinners (of all 3 types). no reserve opener (gambhir misses out) and no reserve keeper, but this is a home series so replacements may be found at relatively short notice if necessary. my first-choice 11 would be: dhawan, vijay, pujara, tendulkar, kohli, rahane, dhoni, ashwin, bhuvneshwar, ojha and umesh.

  • on October 31, 2013, 8:57 GMT

Zak was bowling like a dream against Haryana. He was moving the ball both ways.expected him to be a certainity. There is still room for Ishant?asking him to spearhead this Indian attack is equivalent to digging land based on a seer's dream-No use.

  • on October 31, 2013, 8:57 GMT

For people shouting about M Vijay's selection, keep in mind he was India's highest run scorer in our last home series vs Aus with 2 hundreds and a fifty in a low scorer at Delhi. So atleast allow him to fail before shooing him away !

  • on October 31, 2013, 8:57 GMT

I am sure Ishant and Amit Mishra MUST have been selected on the bais of their recent performnces and Harbhajan must got this punishment for NOT performing in the recent Ranji Match. I am glad not to see Zak in the side, great selection. Good Job.

  • MaheshLoya on October 31, 2013, 8:56 GMT

Completely Nonsense selection... Why the hell Ishant sharma retained? Ashwin is completely out of touch since last Australia test series. Seems CSK effect!!

  • BCCI_Man on October 31, 2013, 8:56 GMT

Oh.......Ishant Sharma is a LUCKY CRICKETER to get a chance everytime. May god Bless Indian Selectors.....

  • subnys on October 31, 2013, 8:55 GMT

Personally I feel Sehwag and Gambhir are out of the equation (at least for now). But deep down I felt that Gambhir might be given a chance in place of Vijay. But I am happy that didn't happen.

But in spite of the extended run Rohit Sharma has had with the bat as an opener in ODIs, I feel Rahane should open with Dhawan, as he has consistently knocked on the doors with good results in domestic circuit. Even when everyone (including SRT) failed in the first inning at Lahli, Rahane stood tall.

  • on October 31, 2013, 8:55 GMT

  • on October 31, 2013, 8:54 GMT

Sehwag instead of Vijay, gambhir instead of rahane and Zaheer instead of Ishant Sharma. India play most of the test matches away after this mini 2 test series and if we need to have a strong Test Side we need to have experience and flair in the middle order and pace bowling (in batting order) Dhawan,Gambhir ,Pujara ,Tendulkar ,Kohli ,Sehwag ,Dhoni ,Aswin ,Mishra, U yadav, Z Khan. After Tendulkar retires in foreign conditions. Dhawan,Gambhir,Pujara ,Kohli ,R Sharma,Sehwag ,Dhoni ,(Aswin /Mishra), U yadav, Z Khan, B Kumar.

  • Ananth83 on October 31, 2013, 8:48 GMT

The squad looks fine with one exception. How the hell does Vijay find a place. He is in horrendous form and couldn't play more than 40 balls considering both the innings in the recent Ranji game against services. Rohit, Rahane most likely would not be in the playing 11 even though they are in the squad. Zak, Bhajji still have to perform harder in Ranji to be considered as no selection committee would tinker with a squad that won 4 - 0.
