Kings XI Punjab sign-up Abbott and Cutting

ESPNcricinfo staff

Kings XI Punjab have included the seamers Kyle Abbott and Ben Cutting to their squad for the ongoing fifth season of the IPL, as replacements for the injured duo of R Sathish and Stuart Broad.

Cutting, the right-arm seamer from Australia, came close to national selection last year when he was named in the Test squad to play New Zealand at the Gabba. He was the leading wicket-taker in the 2009-10 Sheffield Shield season with 46 wickets at an average of 23.91.

Abbott, the right-arm seamer from South Africa, took eight wickets from ten games for the Dolphins in the MiWay T20 Challenge. He also has 85 first-class wickets.

"I am excited about Kyle and Ben being a part of our squad," said Kings XI's bowling coach Joe Dawes. "Both these seamers are young and talented and have the right spirit to lead the team to great heights."

Broad, the England allrounder, was ruled out in order to continue his rehabilitation from injury. He sustained an injury to his right calf during England's recent tour of Sri Lanka. Broad also missed the 2011 IPL season after sustaining a rib injury. Sathish, formerly with Mumbai Indians, is recovering from a knee injury.

no sense at all in the selection....useless strategy by taking wrong guys....all they need is quality indian bowlers & batsmen...wonder why VRV Singh is still outside from this year's IPL...

@Dashgar - 100% agree. I felt that Cutting up until Pattinson's Test debut, was a superior talent. Pattinson got the jump on him, & the rest is history. I think Cutting will be lethal in England, he also is a bloody good batsmen! @Winsome - I was gutted when NCN got injured at the start of the Shield summer. I really thought that he would earn a National call up in some form of the game before the season was out!

With Azhar Mahmood joining the squad..and Ryan Harris coming soon..and already having players like David Miller and James Faulkner warming the bench..Wonder what the Kings XI management were thinking behind these signings. Absurd.

they definetly got a significant upgrade with cutting coming in for broad. i notice it says england allrounder? would he have to learn to bowl before being considered an allrounder?

cutting is a no brainer. strange that coulter-nile hasnt been picked up, in fact that is utterly bizarre, was probably the best fast bowler in the BBL and one of the best fielders i have ever seen

The weakest team of all.. I have never heard these names in my life.. Preity Zinta has selected a very bad team.. The only thing she has done right is by taking Gilly.. She has put enough pressure on Gilchrist to march a team with no quality attack.. They should have atleast had a sound bowling attack.

I think KIXP need to boost their reserves but these signings make less sense to me (and they may be good signings, don't get me wrong, let's wait and see). I think they were more in need of boosting the domestic contingent. Since you are allowed only 4 overseas players, it seems to suggest to me that they will likely want to pick the following for most matches going forward: Gilchrist, Dave Hussey, Shaun Marsh and Mascarenhas. Azhar Mahmood is also going to join the side soon and there are already another few overseas players who are in the squad who are awaiting chances. Also Ryan Harris will join the squad later in the tournament. I am not sure that having 2 extra overseas players helps that situation.
