WATCH - Younis powers superb 218

Younis Khan has been ruled out of Pakistan's first Test against West Indies, with doctors advising him 10 days of rest to regain his strength after recovering from a bout of dengue fever.

"Younis has informed chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq that he won't able to play the first Test," a PCB spokesperson told ESPNcricinfo. "The selectors are yet to announce the squad, but its is confirmed that Younis will not take part in the opening game in Dubai. He asked for rest to be fully fit before his national selection since he has recently recovered from dengue."

Last month, the 38-year-old Younis contracted a high fever that was later diagnosed as the mosquito-borne disease dengue, for which he was treated in a Karachi hospital. This forced him to miss the first round of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, Pakistan's premier first-class tournament. Doctors have advised Younis to extend his rest for another 10 days. He is expected to be available for the second Test in Abu Dhabi.

Younis last missed a Test match in May 2011 - also against West Indies, coincidentally, in St Kitts - and has since featured in 41 successive matches, scoring 3839 runs in that period, at an average of 59.06. He is now Pakistan's leading run-getter in Tests with 9456 runs at 53.72, and in his last appearance scored 218 against England at The Oval.

Pakistan will begin their three-match Test series with a pink-ball, day-night match at the Dubai International Stadium from October 13. The second Test begins on October 21 in Abu Dhabi, and the third in Sharjah on October 30.

@CRICK_EXPERT : Have you watched recent Pakistan Test Cricket (say last 5 years or so). Asad Shafiq has been the one of the best performers. Non selection of YK is because he is ill, Malik retired from Test Cricket about 12 months ago. Sharjeel is yet to score runs consistentlyin ODIs, therefore does not merit a place in the Test team, Ahmed Shezhad we all know why he is out of the team, - come on mate do you even watch test cricket? Pakistan are ranked no.1 because of Azhar, YK, Misbah and Asad Shafiq. The players you want in the team are no comparison. @I.AZIZ thanks man.

Younis will be a big loss. He looked good in the last test against England, seriously though Pakistan need to pick their best talent and have competition for places.

@CRICK_EXPERT: Yes! Asad Shafiq is definitely better. I might say, the best young Pak batsman on the scence. Okay. Don't trust me. But would you ignore the similar remarks of Grant Flower and then Micky Arthur about him being the best technically correct batsman in Pakistan?

only two batsmen and nine bowlers.......what a BAD TEAM Selection?? Where is Fawad Alam, Shoiab Maqsood, Sarjeel Khan, Younis Khan, Ifthair Ahmad, Shoiab Malik, Shan Masood, Ahmad Shahzad, Nasir Jamshed, IMAD....so ASAD SAFIQ is better than all those players?....

My first comment on Cricinfo, It's so annoying when we almost become enemy of some player after a couple of bad performances and right off all their carrier long contributions and heroics, but on the other hand carrying them as a baggage at an expense of young talent with serious potential is also a crime, when in the Allah name we will understand when to give a proper send off to an elderly player with diminishing skills and give a proper chance to young talent to express themselves, Yes I am talking about Hafeez.

M.F Gafoor you cant blame the whole team bcause of two club level players s.msood & shazad look their s.r this is 3 days match not 10days and fawad & Iftikhar playing with s.r

It is a humble request to all those who post a comment here to be fair to all the players. Why is there no one to speak for Fakhar Zaman and Sadaf Hussain. Sadaf Husain is the better than Muhammad Amir, Fakhar Zaman is the best batting talent in Pakistan. Bats long and can hit along the ground and over the top. Plays the spin and fast bowlers equally and is a very good fielder. Just go and check Fakhar, Shan Masood and then tell me why should Shan be given priority over Fakhar. And so far Sadaf is concerned if he takes that many wkts on Pakistani pitches, think what will he do in England NZ and Aus.

The current run rate is 2.26 it seems all these batsmen are trying to score some runs and trying to obtain the place in the side. It means none of them are capable to play modern day cricket. Even in the test matches teams like Aus, NZ,IND,RSA & ENG used to maintain the R.R minimum 3.8 - 4.0 but Pakistan batsmen strike rates are very low comparing to others. in this practice match is only about the challenge of players individual performances it's not seems a team effort at all.

Hafeez again out for zero in side match. Hats off to him. What a come back.
