Sialkot Stallions get place in Champions League

The Champions League T20 governing council has approved the inclusion of the Sialkot Stallions in this year's tournament to be held in October. Sialkot will be the first domestic team from Pakistan to take part in the event. Sundar Raman, a member of the CLT20's technical committee, announced the decision on Twitter. "CLT to invite Sialkot stallions for this year's edition," Raman tweeted.

Earlier this month the BCCI, the league's largest stakeholder, announced that it would inform the tournament's governing council ahead of today's meeting that it had no objection to the participation of a team from Pakistan. BCCI president N Srinivasan said the CLT20 governing council had already decided to invite a Pakistani team for the next tournament, to be held in India in October; the BCCI was now concurring with that decision. "The CLT20 is owned by the BCCI, Cricket Australia, and Cricket South Africa, so we will recommend to the governing council that the BCCI has no objection and is prepared to invite a Pakistan team," Srinivasan said at the time.

Sialkot were also the representatives in the 2008 tournament but that event was cancelled after the Mumbai terrorist attacks and Pakistani teams had been kept out of subsequent tournaments. The Sialkot Regional Cricket Association had requested the PCB last month to make efforts to enable the participation of Sialkot in the Champions League. The PCB, in turn, had said that Sialkot's participation was dependent on the restoration of bilateral ties between India and Pakistan.

I just wonder if the teams still have a possibility to purchase new players before CL or if it has to be the same team which won their domestic tournament.

This is not a war, but stop saying that india is better than Pakistan, maybe on recent form. Firstly do you remember ICL, Pakistan won 1 Final and lost one Final and guess who won the other final for the other team? Abdul Razzaq...Secondly Sohail Tanveer was a massive part of the team who won the first IPL final...Sialkot will with this format and Pakistan is one of the best in T20, in fact the T20 world cup indian won was because they got lucky in the group stage in the bowl out...based on the current rules they would have been knocked out. We all saw the semi final and for the first 100 runs Pakistan were going to win it, Pak lost that final indias bowlers are a threat to no 1.

@getsetgopk -- Do I need to remind you what happened in World Cup Semi final and in the Asia Cup? Come on my friend, just because you are still hurting from those losses does not mean you start braying like a senseless donkey!

@smartguy786, It seems my friend you are still hurting from being the only country rejected from the IPL .. Get over it , such is life.

As for my personal opinion, I am quite happy that Sialkot Stallions are playing in the Champions League. Am sure they will put up a good fight.

This is the best chance for Sialkoties to prove their coin in the CLT20 in front of all top domestic teams of the world.

As an Indian, I am daringly ashamed by the fact that pakistani players, which are undoubtedly amongst the world's best, are simply denied a place in the IPL. Politically india and pakistan are on a warfront, lets face it. But cant there ever be peace brought about these nations? Nations with the same culture, language etc..? Cricket, be it IPL, or otherwise brings both indians and pakistanis together in perfect harmony and in good spirit, win or lose, like mohali back in 2011. So people, lets try and have the likes of Afridi, Ajmal,Kamran and the long list of champions from across the border be to IPL. Sports is not War....Or else IPL will sooner than later lose its charm !

Amazing some Pakistani Fans still insist their team is the best in T20. They are very good but not best. Awake please. To reiterate IPL has been successfull even without them. In fact Mr Boom Boom was a flop when he played. Who needs players with huge egos. We have a billion people who can watch IPL dont need few more millions.

Great News ! Come on sialkot thrash all the IPL teams and let them see who are the real champions not some film star paid team!

  • Amjad on May 29, 2012, 12:56 GMT

If the rules are tweaked to just let the local players play in CL then im thinking IPL teams would make it as far as the first round and if by chance since its a T20 tournament, one team do make it to round two then that would be the biggest upset LOL
