Sri Lanka's new selection panel has chosen Angelo Perera, Tharindu Kaushal and Akila Dananjaya along with 21 other young players in an emerging squad from which the team for the warm-up match against Bangladesh in Matara will be chosen.

Perera, a 22-year-old middle order batsman, has been in stunning form in the Premier League tournament, having made two aggressive hundreds and an 87 in his three innings so far.

Offspinner Tharindu Kaushal, 19, has also been picked on form during his first season of domestic cricket, in which he has taken 22 List A wickets at 18.63, and 19 first-class scalps at 8.89. His first two first-class matches have yielded three five-wicket hauls. Kaushal was picked in the Sri Lanka squad for the home Tests against New Zealand in November last year, but did not get a game.

Dananjaya meanwhile, has been part of Sri Lanka's limited-overs squads since last year's World Twenty20, and has also had a promising debut domestic season so far.

Wicketkeeper-batsman and opener Niroshan Dickwella, who was the 2012 schoolboy cricketer of the year, has also had a successful introduction to professional cricket at 19, most notably scoring a match-winning hundred in the inter-provincial limited overs final.

Ashen Silva, a 22-year-old opener in a more conservative mould, has been chosen, while middle-order batsman Kithruwan Vithanage, who has scored heavily in the Premier League Tournament so far, also earns a spot.

The team will be coached by former Sri Lanka wicketkeeper-batsman Romesh Kaluwitharana, and play a three-day match against Bangladesh from March 3-5 to kick off the tour.

Squad Ashen Silva, Niroshan Dickwella (wk), Tharindu Kaushal, Akila Dananjaya, Angelo Perera, Udara Jayasundera, Shehan Jayasuriya, Kithruwan Vithanage, Ashan Priyanjana, Rumesh Buddika, Gayan Manishan (wk), Sandun Weerakkody, Lahiru Madushanka, Ishantha Jayaratne, Dushmantha Chameera, Vishwa Fernando, Lahiru Gamage, Kasun Madushanka, Lahiru Jayaratne, Chaturanga de Silva, Ramith Rambukwela, Dulanjana Mendis, Maduka Liyanapathirana.

Its a good move by new selection panel.Well experience MF Maharoof form in recent domestic must consider when replacing experience guys too & also feel BMDK Mendis(total no of wickets in current tournaments is exceptional) and Kaushal Silva top candidates for selection too. keep it up good work sanath Aiya

I prefer Bhanuka over his school teammate Ramith. Yes Ramith has played some cameos here & there, but I don't think those are good enough to be called into a squad which is going to play a 3 day tour match. But I agree Bhanuka is not in the best of form, still he should be included over some of the names mentioned above. And this is a good lesson to Bhanuka as well. He should try be consistent if he wants wear national colours. And his club SSC also should be responsible for this, which is promoting players Lokuarachchi ahead of proper batsman like Bhanuka in first class matches.

Great to see Kasun Madushanka in the squad..all the best!!!

hmm after reading all the comments made by the SL Fans.. I dont think SOHAN BORALESSA should be in this list at all.. i think he should be in the Sri Lankan Squad and should be playing for Sri Lanka by now.. Im sure Our Sana Boy will give the rightful place for SOHAN BORALESSA..

Posted by   on (February 13, 2013, 9:39 GMT)

@udendra- Are you serious mate? You really dont know why Ramith Rambukwella is in this squad and probably will stick around forever? Ever heard of one Keheliya Rambukwella? Yea. This is Sri Lanka.

Interesting move.Lets see how this guy reacts

Posted by   on (February 13, 2013, 9:04 GMT)

@ Sujan M if age is a barrier he has performed in the last 03 years significantly..Still the selectors didn't give him a chance!!! Now you say he s 27... In this can i know how old was Rangana when he really started to cement his place in the national side??? I m sure 27 is not age to be called "Old" at any given circumstances ..Their many examples of players who have done fabulously when they were 30+... I hope you have played enough cricket to make such comments such as players age.. It s all about how mentally and physically fit you are and level of focus on the game..Have a great day..

I totally agree with Nameez and Tharindu.. Sohan Boraleesa has been consistently performing in the last 03 domestic seasons.. I really don't why people are getting selected when there perform one or 2 matches.. Its about the consistency that matters in order to survive in the top level.. Players like Tharindu Kaushal (Who has done considerably well in the last 02 games) and Dulanjana Mendis who has just played couple of games in domestic cricket gets the node over Sohan. Andrew I really hope ur reading the papers and you have certain amount of influence on media in terms of commenting about players who are doing really well.. I hope you consider this gem other wise it will be a total waste if he doesn't get an opportunity.. Which will be really sad in terms of SL cricket. Cheers.

I guess the fact that Sohan Boralessa not in this squad makes sense. In this squad the oldest player is 23 years old where as Boralessa is 27. This squad is like a under 23 team looking for the future. Painfully Boralessa is too old for this squad. @Tharindu Ruwantha Magedara last week Ashan Priyanjan scored a 235 in a first class game in case u didn't knew about it.

why is sohan boralessa, a consistent performer at domestic level ignored??? and net bowlers continued to pick???

Posted by PadMarley on (February 13, 2013, 6:57 GMT)

It shows over and over again.... the promise on batsmen, allrounders, and spinners seem to be secured for another generation. Where are the promising fast bowlers???? Looks like no one between 19-24 years as at today, are showing good potential in this department. This is a big worry for the future balance!!

Posted by miles100 on (February 13, 2013, 6:22 GMT)

I'll tell you what, the best young batsman who can also bowl is Dinuk Wikramanayake. He is still playing School cricket and his batting average is almost 75 and he is also a wicket taking part time bowler. This kid is very consistent and I am sure Sanath and the rest will consider picking him soon in the squad.

Posted by   on (February 13, 2013, 6:06 GMT)

Where is Roshen Silva one of the most consistent batters in the last 2 seasons ???

Posted by Udendra on (February 13, 2013, 5:31 GMT)

@axe_hay: Bhanuka rajapakse hasn't performed well with the bat in recent times.

Posted by Udendra on (February 13, 2013, 5:29 GMT)

can someone tell me why Ramith Rambukwella is in this squad? he has got no current form and his stats are awful.

Posted by   on (February 13, 2013, 5:26 GMT)

Well im not very knowledgeable on the current upcoming cricketers of SL, but from what i see when i read the comments, SOHAN BORALESSA A MUST, has not been included, @ ANDREW, you have the capacity to bring this to the light for the sake of SL cricket

Posted by lukecannon on (February 13, 2013, 5:17 GMT)

That is some very good news. Good luck Sri Lanka and Dananjaya

Posted by   on (February 13, 2013, 4:48 GMT)

good squad of youngsters ..good selection by Jayasuriya and the rest of the Panel, bt I would have liked to See Sohan Boralessa, Shehan Jayasuriya in the squad. I don't think Ashan Priyanjana deserves to picked.. he doesn't have a single professional century ) and his averages aren't that great.

Posted by   on (February 13, 2013, 4:21 GMT)

wow.great squad.hope they will not play any IPL games

Posted by Htc-Android on (February 13, 2013, 4:20 GMT)

My humble request to the slectors. Please dont select paranavithana for test matches after dilshan retires. Please give second chance to upul tharanga. He is much more suited to the test format than the ODI format. I would pick either senanaya or boralessa as the second spinner to play along with herath. They are the most consistent performers in our domestic circuit.

Ha..Ha...there is the name many people has expected.Ramith Rabukwella...son of a cabinet minister Keheliya Rabuukwella, who is also the government spokesman. There are many talented batsman in the country than Ramith. For the very first time politics has taken it place in the selection.Sure he will be in the playing 11 at Matara match.

Posted by MilroyL.S.A.Don on (February 13, 2013, 4:09 GMT)

I haven't seen big runs coming from Rambukwella's bat?

Posted by   on (February 13, 2013, 1:17 GMT)

I m really confused why Sohan Boralessa is not picked out...It keeps on baffling me... Guess the only mistake he is doing right now is taking wickets on a consistent basis. Unlike Dulanjana Mendis (done only well in two or three games in the domestic limited over competition) & Tharindu Kaushal who has taken handful of wickets in the last 02 games has got selected. Sohan taking significant # of wickets in the last 03 seasons been over looked... FYI Sohan did take 9 wickets as well in the 1st match in this years Domestic 3 day match as well..Really cant think of a reason why hes not getting picked up..@ Andrew- hope your reading the news papers as well..Good luck SL cricket..

Dinesh Chandimal, I am sure will be the next sensation if SL tackles him well else he will also follow Dinesh Karthik of India!!!!

Got 2 b impressed that such a tiny nation produces a array of excellent cricketers and the Sri Lankans always look a unites unit ... Pretty sure that the future will be no different

Posted by axe_hay on (February 12, 2013, 23:20 GMT)

Where is Bhanuka Rajapakshe , Roshan Jayatissa, Sohan Boralessa and Shehan Jayasuriya ??? They are equally talented and future stars of SL.

it is nice to see some new faces in this series even though for warm-up games.
