Corey Anderson's strong all-round performance helped New Zealand beat India by a 24-run margin in the first ODI in Napier on Sunday.
Anderson, who recently smashed the fastest ODI century, carried on his belligerent form and clobbered 68 from 40 deliveries, to help his side post 292. He then claimed two wickets to wrestle the advantage again.
Anderson came to the crease with the score on 171, after the dismissal of Ross Taylor in the 37th over. It took him just one over to settle down. He clubbed Mohammed Shami for a boundary in the 39th over and then hit Ishant Sharma for the maximum an over later.
India turned to R Ashwin for answers, but Anderson hoisted him for another six in the 41st over. New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum's departure in the 42nd over failed to stop the run flow. Luke Ronchi and Anderson switched gears in the 44th over and smashed Shami for 19 runs.
Ravindra Jadeja got similar treatment an over later and conceded 20 runs.
India stumbled at the start and lost opener Rohit Shama in the sixth over for just 3. Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan then put on a 58-run stand for the second wicket, but Anderson struck and dismissed Dhawan for 32.
Kohli continued his rich vein of form that saw him scale the ODI rankings recently and scored his 18th ODI ton. But apart from Kohli's effort, the other batsmen failed to make an impact. Anderson finished with figures of two wickets for 51 runs.
"I thought we played the spinners well," McCullum said. "It doesn't turn a lot in Napier. There could be a different challenge when we get to Hamilton but also the two guys we had at the crease were two of our best batters against spin.
"The result today is huge for us. To start the series against what is a very good Indian team and Virat Kohli to perform as well as what he did, is a really good sign. So I'm delighted for the guys and delighted for today's performance."
