Bangladesh's preparations for the NatWest Series got off to a dreadful start as they were easily defeated by Derbyshire in a one-sided day-night match at Derby.
Already on the back foot after being hammered by England in the Test series, Bangladesh needed to bounce back against a full-strength Derbyshire side. But after winning the toss and batting, little went right for the tourists. Only a fourth-wicket stand of 80 in 19 overs between Habibul Bashar and Tushar Imran helped them avoid an even heavier defeat, but they never looked capable of being able to defend a score of 189.
Derbyshire lost Nick Walker early on, run out for 5, but Steve Stubbings with 45 from 43 balls left Bangladesh wilting before Jon Moss and skipper Luke Sutton stepped on the accelerator with a match-winning stand of 106. Moss scored 72 off 94 balls when he holed out to mid-on, but Sutton hit the winning runs to finish unbeaten on 42 and complete a straightforward win, achieved with more than 11 overs to spare.
Bangladesh now face Worcestershire on Sunday before they meet England next Thursday. On tonight's performance, that could be every bit as one-sided as the Tests.
