† AUSTRALIA v NEW ZEALAND 1980-81

At Adelaide, November 23

15-Apr-1982
At Adelaide, November 23. New Zealand won by three wickets. In the first match of the one-day international series, the Australians again revealed their inability to come to terms with the needs of limited-overs cricket. Too many of their batsmen threw their wickets away when well set, although Dyson drove and cut well in his 69 and in the last over of the Australian innings Marsh took three 6s and two 4s off Cairns, who kept pitching the ball on his leg. New Zealand were given a good start by Wright and Edgar, and Howarth and Hadlee played important innings at a critical time. The winning run came off the first ball of the last over, Cairns snicking Lawson safely for 4, there being no fielder at slip. Chatfield, who took five for 34, was named Man of the Match. J. G. Bracewell, fielding for New Zealand as a substitute, held four catches.
