†AUSTRALIA v WEST INDIES 1988-89

At Sydney, January 12 (day/night)

15-Apr-1990
At Sydney, January 12 (day/night). Australia won by 61 runs. Toss: Australia. For the last of the qualifying matches, with the finalists already decided, Australia rested Alderman and West Indies omitted Greenidge and Walsh. A close finish seemed to be taking shape when West Indies, needing 216 to win in 48 overs, collapsed against the spin of Taylor and Border, a reasonably comfortable 100 for two becoming 134 for eight within the space of eleven overs. The West Indian batsmen showed few signs of adapting to the slow, turning pitch. With the result of only academic interest in the context of the competition, the size of the crowd was a surprise.
Man of the Match: P. L. Taylor. Attendance: 45,620.
