Close Northern Districts 206 and 60 for 6 (C Martin 5-11) trail Canterbury 452 (Papps 192, Fulton 83; B Martin 5-81) by 186 runs
Scorecard
Chris Martin might have slipped out of the thinking of New Zealand's selectors, but he gave them a reminder of what he is capable of when he rocked Northern Districts in their State Championship match at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. Martin scythed through the top order, taking 5 for 11 off 12 overs. At one stage ND were reeling at 12 for 6, but Joseph Yovich (30 not out) and Bruce Martin (19 not out) got them to 60 for six at stumps, still 186 runs from avoiding an innings defeat.
Earlier, Canterbury were bowled out in their first innings for 452, with Michael Papps's innings coming to an end at 192, after 534 minutes at the crease. It was his highest first-class score. Brad Martin was the best of the Northern Districts' bowlers, finishing with 5 for 81.
Close Wellington 297 for 6 (Donaldson 92, Franklin 57*, Bell 55) trail Otago 465 by 168 runs
Scorecard
Wellington ended the third day on 297 for 6 at Carisbrook against Otago, still 168 runs behind on the first innings. Former international Matthew Bell and Grant Donaldson put on 111 for the first wicket, but Wellington failed to build on their efforts. Bell was first out for 55 while Donaldson was out for the second time this summer in the nineties when he made 92.
Down the order, James Franklin, who scored 57 not out in 221 minutes, and Chris Nevin, who made 41, put on 82 runs, but unless Wellington tempt Otago to go for an outright victory by declaring in the hope they will be set a target, the game seems destined for a tame draw.
Nathan Morland, the Otago offspinner, had a long stint with the ball and finished the day with figures of 2 for 66 from 42 overs. Brad Scott had 2 for 70 from 30 overs.
Close Central Districts 201 and 141 for 2 (Sinclair 47*, Spearman 46*)lead Auckland 231 (Walmsley 48, Thompson 5-43) by 110 runs
Scorecard
There was no play in the Auckland v Central Districts match due to rain.
