Cork steers Debyshire to easy win over Glamorgan

Dominic Cork gave another indication that he will be ready for the start of this summer's Test campaign with a match-winning innings at Derby.

The Derbyshire captain rescued his team from the wreckage of 5-3 to guide them to a six-wicket win with 20 balls to spare.

Cork timed the ball well on a slow pitch to score an unbeaten 83 from 99 balls and was well supported by Richard Illingworth in a seventh wicket stand of 55.

Glamorgan might have pulled the game back if Robert Croft had not spilled a catch at short third man when Illingworth was on six and Derbyshire were 112-6.

That was their last chance as Illingworth promptly reverse-swept Croft for four and then swung Steve Watkin for two more boundaries to carry Derbyshire to within sight of victory.

But it was Cork who sustained his side after Darren Thomas and Watkin had taken three wickets in the first five overs.

Derbyshire wobbled again when Luke Sutton and Graeme Welch went with the total on 68, but although Karl Krikken became the fourth batsmen to depart without scoring, Cork and Illingworth shut the door on the Glamorgan attack.

Welch had earlier taken his best one-day figures, finishing with 5-22, as Glamorgan were bowled out for 138 after winning the toss.

Although Adrian Dale played fluently for 37, they were always struggling to make a challenging total after the first four wickets fell for only 20 runs.

Derbyshire will hope the victory signals a change of fortune in the National League. Last season they won only two games and finished bottom of Division Two.
