Boeta Dippenaar increased his chances of earning a Test recall after slamming an unbeaten 167 in the South Africans' two-day game against University of West Indies XI in St. Augustine. UWI XI, captained by Ridley Jacobs, failed to capitalise on the advantage at the toss as the South Africans ended the day on a dominant position of 349 for 3.
Dippenaar, who is likely to replace Jacques Rudolph for the third Test, lost AB de Villiers, his opening partner, early but steadied the innings with a solid 55-run stand with Ashwell Prince. Prince, though failed to cash in on his start and fell to Tino Best, who returned from a back injury.
South Africa continued to build partnerships, including 123 for the third wicket between Dippenaar and Herschelle Gibbs, who chipped in with 81. Dippenaar, who smashed 20 fours and two sixes, also stitched an unbroken 120-run-partnership, with Mark Boucher, who remained unbeaten on 53. Fidel Edwards, who would be hopeful for a Test berth after regaining fitness, ended with no wickets and none of the seven bowlers used made too much of an impression.
