England v India
At Lord's, June 29
15-Apr-2003
At Lord's, June 29. India won by six wickets. India 4 pts. Toss: England.
A classy, unbroken stand of 131 in 21 overs between Dravid and Yuvraj eased India home with
seven balls to spare after a mid-innings collapse almost handed the game to England. Sehwag had
hurried India to 109 in the 18th over, but when he picked out Trescothick on the mid-wicket
boundary, the innings threatened to unravel. Mongia and Tendulkar followed cheaply, before
Ganguly fell victim to one of the greatest catches ever held at Lord's. Launching Giles towards
wide long-on, he watched in horror as Kirtley hared round the boundary, dived at full stretch and
clung on with his left hand an inch above the turf. England would have been favourites had Stewart
not dropped Dravid on 23, and were left to rue the profligacy of their young seamers: Hoggard,
Kirtley and Flintoff leaked 175 runs in 26.5 overs; Giles and Irani conceded just 72 in 20. Their
batsmen were culpable too, after failing to convert Trescothick's thumping 78-ball 86 into something
closer to 300. Yuvraj chiselled away at the middle order with his underrated left-arm spin, before
providing a batting masterclass in how to finish a job properly.
Man of the Match: Yuvraj Singh.
