England v New Zealand 2008

Wisden's review of Kent V New Zealanders, England v New Zealand, 2008

15-Apr-2009
At Canterbury, April 28, 29, 30. Drawn. Toss: Kent. First-class debut: A. J. Blake.
Rain washed out more than half the match, ensuring little more than batting pride was at stake. Kent - yet to lose in 11 games against New Zealand since 1927 - won hands down on that, courtesy of an unbroken stand of 299 between Key and Tredwell: it was an all-wicket Kent record against any touring side, beating 283 by Frank Woolley and Wally Hardinge against the 1924 South Africans. Tredwell contributed a career-best 123, while Key's 178 was his 16th first-class hundred at Canterbury, 15 of them for Kent (overtaking Neil Taylor's county record of 14). It followed twin centuries by Key against the New Zealanders in 2004. He said: "Sometimes you have teams you do well against as a batter, and unfortunately for New Zealand they seem to cop it every time I go to the wicket against them." Key declared after heavy overnight rain delayed the resumption next day. In the 38.2 overs possible before bad light and more rain, How appeared well-organised if restricted in his strokeplay.
Close of play: First day, Kent 324-1 (Key 178, Tredwell 123); Second day, New Zealanders 92-1 (How 53, Marshall 20).
