The surface at Wankhede stadium in Mumbai has traditionally aided batsmen, but on Wednesday, it was Mumbai's bowlers - Harbhajan Singh and Jasprit Bumrah - in particular that outclassed a strong Hyderabad batting unit by restricting them to just 158 and helping their side register a four-wicket win in the Indian Twenty20 competition.
Rohit Sharma, Mumbai's captain, won the toss and opted to bowl first, with a hope that the evening dew would hamper Hyderabad's in-form spinner, Rashid Khan. But Harbhajan and Bumrah ensured that Mumbai's batsmen weren't dew-reliant for the win as they produced miserly spells that added pressure on their opponents. Harbhajan, who opened the attack, got the ball to skid into opener Shikhar Dhawan, who scored only seven runs at a strike rate of 46.66, his lowest in the first six overs in the competition. While Warner found fluency against Lasith Malinga, at the other end, Bumrah joined Harbhajan in troubling Dhawan.
Hyderabad's openers set the platform for a late onslaught by posting 81 runs in the first 10 overs. Harbhajan drew first blood by dismissing Warner and Deepak Hooda off successive overs. He ended with figures of 2 for 23, at an economy rate of 5.75. Bumrah's spell was riddled with yorkers and slower deliveries. He claimed figures of 3 for 24 at a rate of 6. Hyderabad lost 7 for 72, including four in the last three overs. Mumbai's batsmen completed the chase with eight balls remaining.
