At Bombay, November 11, 12, 14, 15, 16. Drawn. England controlled the match throughout, but found the pitch too good to force victory. David Smith made his Test debut, he and Lock replacing Russell and White compared with the Lahore game. There were no new caps for India, Engineer missing his chance of keeping wicket through injury. Umrigar also had to stand down after being chosen.

Winning the toss, England made a fine start, Pullar and Richardson sharing a stand of 159, a record for the first wicket against India. Richardson, missed when six and 47, was below his best, but Pullar showed splendid form. Three wickets were down for 288 by the close and next day England steadily consolidated. Barrington and Dexter added 161 and the total became the highest by England in India.

India did not lose a wicket in the last fifty-five minutes although Jaisimha retired hurt when struck on the head by Brown. Excellent slow bowling by Allen and Lock kept India fighting and, despite a fifth wicket stand of 142 by Borde and Durani and sound innings by Manjrekar and Jaisimha, England led by 110.

With Pullar absent because of a septic throat, Barber opened the second innings. Richardson batted beautifully and Barrington brought his aggregate for the match to 203 without being dismissed. He batted seven hours in the first innings and two hours, ten minutes in the second. Set to get 295 at 72 an hour, India made no effort to chase the runs. Jaisimha and Manjrekar each hit his second fifty of the match, sharing a stand of 131. After tea the non-regular bowlers met with surprising success. About 200,000 people watched the match.
