Ivor Mendonca dies aged 79

Ivor Mendonca, who kept wicket for West Indies in two Tests against India in 1961-62, has died in Guyana at the age of 79 after a battle with throat and prostate cancer

Ivor Mendonca, who kept wicket for West Indies in two Tests against India in 1961-62, has died in Guyana at the age of 79 after a battle with throat and prostate cancer.
Mendonca's Test appearances came in Jamaica and Trinidad when the first-choice wicketkeeper, Jackie Hendriks, was injured. On debut at Sabina Park, he scored 78 and claimed four catches and a stumping, and he picked up another five dismissals in his second match at Queen's Park Oval.
However, Deryck Murray was preferred for the tour of England the following year and Mendonca did not play for West Indies again. His final Test match was also the last of his 10 first-class appearances.
"The Guyana Cricket Board extends its condolences to his friends and family. Mendonca was one of the best wicketkeeper batsmen in the 50s and 60," Anand Sanasie, the secretary of the Guyana Cricket Board, said.
"He was always exemplary in his conduct and my personal knowledge of him is that he was a coach helping with the grooming of young players."
