Hampshire today confirmed that Neil Johnson has signed a further one year contract, as the clubs overseas player for 2002.
Tim Tremlett, Hampshire's Director of Cricket talking from the Hampshire Rose Bowl said, "We are delighted that Neil has decided to rejoin Hampshire for another season, this popular allrounder had an excellent season in 2001, passing 1,000 runs in first class matches and proved an extremly usefull opening batsmen in the Limited Overs variety. "Although troubled by a shoulder injury early in the season he proved his worth as a seam bowler and is of course an excellent fielder".
Asked about rumours that the club were interested in signing the former Lancashire captain John Crawley, Tim Tremlett was more tight lipped. "Of course any player that becomes available of Crawley's class", Tim said, "would interest us. "We are an ambitious club and are always looking for means to strengthen our squad".
Hampshire also confirmed they have spoken to Leicestershire's James Ormond after he was released by the Midland club. The seam bowler who would make a formidable opening bowling partnership with former club mate Alan Mullally is considering offers from a number of other clubs including Hampshire.
