Kenya v Sri Lanka

At Southampton, May 30

15-Apr-2000
At Southampton, May 30. Sri Lanka won by 45 runs. Toss: Kenya.
The last time these teams met in the World Cup, at Kandy in March 1996, Sri Lanka piled up 398 for five, still the highest total in a one-day international, as they surged irresistibly towards the capture of the trophy. This was a much quieter affair, on a grey and drizzly day, between two teams with nothing to play for. A more modest 275 was still comfortably Sri Lanka's highest score of the competition. The openers managed 72 in 15 overs before Odoyo snatched three quick wickets, but Sri Lanka owed most to a stand of 64 in seven between Jayawardene and Vaas - though by then the ball was so wet the Kenyans had trouble gripping it. Their reply slumped to 52 for five, before Odumbe and Vadher brought Kenya's campaign to a dignified conclusion by adding 161, a record for the sixth wicket in any limited-overs international.
Man of the Match: M. O. Odumbe. Attendance: 4,670.
