Kenya v Sri Lanka
15-Apr-2004
At Sharjah, April 6, 2003 (day/night). Sri Lanka won by 129 runs. Sri Lanka 6 pts. Toss: Sri Lanka. One-day international debuts: A. S. Luseno; K. S. Lokuarachchi.
Sri Lanka gained revenge, of a rather limited kind, for defeat by Kenya at the World Cup. The
match seven weeks earlier had ended with Kenya singing and dancing; this time they subsided
with barely a whimper. Sangakkara set Sri Lanka on course with his second hundred in three
days, although again he left it late, straight-driving the last ball of the innings for four. In reply to 256, Kenya surrendered. Sri Lankan all-rounder Kaushal Lokuarachchi became the 12th player
in one-day internationals to take a wicket with his first ball when Tikolo smashed a leg-break
straight to short cover. Muralitharan rounded up the innings with three wickets in an over. During
the game, Jayasuriya confirmed he would be standing down as captain after the tournament. Sri
Lanka's win meant the following day's match was effectively a semi-final.
Man of the Match: K. C. Sangakkara.
