Kenya v West Indies

At Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo, September 17

15-Apr-2003
At Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo, September 17. West Indies won by 29 runs. Toss: West Indies.
Ultimately, Steve Tikolo's magnificent 93 couldn't gloss over an abysmal fielding display from Kenya as West Indies edged home in a match of several umpiring gaffes. Had Kenya held their catches - five was the conservative estimate - they would have been chasing a lot less than 262. But just as important was Asoka de Silva's refusal to give Lara out caught behind off Collins Obuya on 32, when the ball brushed the full face of the bat, and Venkat's reluctance to refer two lbw appeals which would have been upheld. Lara's last contribution before hepatitis struck was a 15th one-day hundred which revived the innings after a sluggish start. Even then, it took a final flurry from Sarwan and Hinds - who clubbed 20 off seven balls - to reach 250. Kenya's reply came in dribbles and spurts. Shah and Patel bolstered Tikolo but neither lasted long enough to pressure the fielders. Tikolo's exceptional effort, from 91 deliveries, featured both classical strokeplay and improvised tickles to fine leg. He deserved to win, but Collins and Dillon swooped to blow away the last four wickets for 13.
Man of the Match: B. C. Lara.
