Kruger gives Griquas the advantage
Northerns, Gauteng and Griquas all enjoyed wins in the latest round of the UCB Shield

At Buffalo Flats in East London, the leg spin of Warrick Hinkel proved to
be the undoing of Northerns as he helped Border restrict the visitors to
163 in the 45 overs allocated. Johann Myburgh (46) and Francois du
Plessis (37), who had both settled at crease, played rash shots - and they paid dearly as five players failed to reach double figures.
But then disaster struck for Border, as they collapsed to 72 for 5 in 27 overs against the pace attack of Northerns. Dumisa Makalima (32) tried in vain to
recover the innings but, with wickets falling around him, he and Border
were saved further embarrassment when the heavens opened. With no
further play possible, Northerns won by virtue of Messrs Duckworth and
Lewis.
Gauteng 165 for 4 (van Jaarsveld 55) beat Easterns 236
(Seymore 66) by 12 runs (D/L Method)

Having been asked to bat first by Gauteng in Benoni, the Easterns openers
Andre Seymore (66) and Tumelo Mahlangu (19) gave the home team a
solid platform of 88 runs to launch from. The middle order responded and
set Gauteng a stiff target of 236.
Gauteng did not get the start that they wanted but Marthinus Otto (40)
and Vaughn van Jaarsveld (55) steered them back on to the right track.
With the light deteriorating, the two at the crease upped the tempo to get
ahead of Duckworth/Lewis.
After 32 overs, the umpires took the players off the field with Gauteng
on 165 for 4 and 12 runs ahead of the slide rule.
Griqualand West 163 for 5 (Kruger 55) beat Eastern
Province 161 (Kruger 4-20) by 5 wickets

In Port Elizabeth, Griqualand West took full advantage of winning the
toss and then they bowled Eastern Province out for 161 in 42.1 overs.
Eastern Province never recovered from a poor start, with Ruan Nel's 43 the highest contribution by far. Alan Kruger took 4 for 20 in his
nine overs of pace bowling and also scored 55 with the bat to cap off an
excellent personal four days of cricket.
Griqualand West stuttered in their chase, losing five wickets on the way to winning inside 41.4 overs, and in so doing lost the chance of
the extra bonus point. Wendell Bossenger finished with 36 not out, while Deon Carolus took 3-38.
