New Zealand v England 2007-08

Wisden's review of New Zealand v England, 2nd Twenty20 International, 2007-08

Dean Wilson
15-Apr-2009
At Christchurch, February 7, 2008 (floodlit). England won by 50 runs. Toss: England. Twenty20 international debuts: D. R. Flynn, P. A. Hitchcock.
The home side's stand-in captain, McCullum, declared beforehand that losing the Twenty20 series wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, but after this heavy defeat the local newspapers declared cricket in New Zealand to be in crisis. On a blustery night, the opening pair of Mustard, who faced 24 balls, and Wright, 19 balls, clicked for the first time; then Collingwood and Shah put on a match-winning 102 in ten overs, England's biggest stand yet in Twenty20 internationals. A target of 194 always seemed out of reach for New Zealand, especially since Oram was missing with a pulled hamstring. Taylor offered a winning entry for the biggest six of the series, lifting Broad over midwicket into the top tier of the grandstand, but that was the highest point for him and his team; Broad dismissed Taylor next ball, and New Zealand spluttered to a 2-0 series loss.
Man of the Match: P. D. Collingwood. Attendance: 14,233.
