At Wellington, February 21, 22, 24, 25. Drawn after New Zealand made no attempt to score 268 runs in four hours. Despite attempts by anti-apartheid demonstrators to damage the pitch, the match started on time.
South Africa were tied down by accurate bowling, especially by Cameron, and scored 233 for seven wickets before bad light ended play twenty minutes early. Apart from a sixth-wicket partnership of 86 between Sparling and Chapple, New Zealand were always struggling and P. M. Pollock, with a spell of four wickets for ten runs in 18 deliveries ended their innings.
South Africa scored freely before setting a target of 268 runs. At the close New Zealand were 129 behind with four wickets remaining.
