A sudden change in the weather, from 25°C and sunshine one day to 12° and damp the next, ruined the prelude to the New Year celebrations in New Zealand's most popular tourist town. The two and a half hours' play possible before heavy rain arrived was as much a misery for the West Indian batsmen as for those swaddled in their winter clothing on the grass banks.
