Pakistan v England

At Lahore, October 21, 22, 24, 25, 26

15-Apr-1963
At Lahore, October 21, 22, 24, 25, 26. England won by five wickets with only thirty-five minutes remaining. England established a supremacy on the fourth day and although letting it slip for a while they won well.
Lock, because of a pulled thigh muscle, could not play and England fielded three newcomers, White, Brown and Russell. Afaq Hussain made his debut for Pakistan.
When Imtiaz won the toss, White took wickets with his eleventh and sixteenth balls in Test cricket, but England had to fight hard for subsequent wickets. Saeed and Burki put on 138 and Burki and Mushtaq added 153.
With the total 315 for three at one point few could have visualized an England victory. Burki's 138, his first Test century, took six and a quarter hours and included one 6 and seventeen 4's. The remaining batsmen gave little trouble.
England also began badly but recovered through Barrington and Mike Smith who put on 192 before Smith was run out going for the single to complete his century. Barrington was also run out after a determined stay of seven hours, ten minutes for 139. He hit nineteen 4's.
Pakistan led by seven but lost their first three wickets for 33 and despite a last stand of 52 they never really recovered.
England, needing 208 in 250 minutes, were always just ahead of the clock, but at the fall of the fifth wicket at 108 the game was wide open. Then Dexter and Barber, in a fine unfinished stand, won the match by adding 101 in eighty-five minutes. Dexter gave a fine display of aggression and defence and led his side to victory on his first appearance as England's captain.
