At Peshawar, November 22. England won by 98 runs. Toss: England. Still without Javed Miandad and further weakened by Wasim Akram's absence because of a groin strain, Pakistan were beaten comfortably with 79 balls to spare. Only Salim Malik (78 balls, one four) offered any resistance. Shoaib was ruled out for the First Test when, with Pakistan 11 for one, he missed an attempted hook off DeFreitas, was struck and needed four stitches to his left eyebrow. England's innings had been built around half-centuries from Gooch (78 balls), Broad (110 balls) and Gatting (51 balls).
