Pakistan v New Zealand, 2009-10

Wisden's review of Pakistan v New Zealand, 2nd ODI, 2009-10

15-Apr-2010
At Abu Dhabi, November 6, 2009 (day/night). New Zealand won by 64 runs. Toss: New Zealand.
New Zealand levelled the series with a comprehensive victory of their own, inspired by Brendon McCullum's stunning return to form. McCullum had made only two half-centuries in 27 one-day internationals since hammering an under-strength Ireland for 166 in July 2008, but now he collected his second one-day hundred, hitting 14 fours and three sixes - the pick a superbly timed short-arm pull over the square-leg boundary off Mohammad Aamer - from 129 balls before departing with a total of 300 in sight. Guptill helped him add 126, and finally Oram made sure Pakistan had a mountain to climb. The openers started circumspectly, and their useful stand of 77 occupied 16.2 overs; then Salman Butt and the out-of-form Younis Khan (whose 19 took 37 balls) lifted the score to 124 for one after 27.1. Three wickets in 11 deliveries for Styris - including the crucial one of Shahid Afridi, to his first legal ball after a wide - left the other batsmen with too much to do.
Man of the Match: B. B. McCullum.
